Last night we took Sam over to a local church that was hosting a “Share the Love” event. Yeah, doesn’t sound like us, does it? We went because Sam’s guitar teacher, Jessica Graae, was one of the performers. We only were there for about an hour, long enough to see Jessica and one other performer. Mark and I really wanted to let Sam see her teacher actually working at her craft. It’s a good experience for her to have, to see how much you can do if you practice and become good at playing.
Sam really did love it, and Jessica came up and talked to us a bunch of times and told Sam how nice it was to see her right up front. 🙂
If you haven’t heard Jessica, and I am sure you have not, she is worth checking out. She has a few CDs of original music and plays locally quite often. Check her out here!

Happy Valentine’s Day to my cutie! It was all I could do to get her to restrain herself before school. She wanted to wake up Mark first thing so he could give her presents. She knows every year she gets candy from her Dad. I told her she couldn’t, but she could open the gifts from the kitties. Penny got her a hedgehug, (get it, hedgehug?) and Zach bought her a little stuffed lion. Sam is always calling him her little lion.
After school, Sam exchanged gifts with Mark. She painted him a robot picture, which he loved, and she opened her multitudes of candy from me and Mark.
Her school party was so much fun. We kept the craft simple, just a valentine for them to take home, and for the rest of the party they ate snacks and exchanged valentine cards.
Sam and her friend, Aubrey…
A few of the kids wanted me to take their picture with Miss McCray, and it became a crazy crowd because they all wanted to be in it! At least they like their teacher, that’s something!
The kids all did a great job on their valentines. A few of them gave it to Miss McCray, which was really sweet.
Me and my girl!
This was the first class party where no one was absent, so it’s class picture time!
Sam gave me her valentine. 🙂 I love you too!

Yesterday Sam tried ice skating for the first time! She has been begging me for years and we just never manage to go. One of her classmates had a birthday party at an ice skating rink and Sam was so excited! She tried to get me to go with her, but um…no. The first time I am on ice skates will not be at a school party! She did ok for her first time. She only fell once or twice, and although she wasn’t exactly gliding along, she did manage to shuffle her way around the ice.
After a while she wanted to try one of the walker sort of things. I don’t think it really helped much, but she wanted to try.
All the girls seemed to have a good time, and that’s what it’s about, isn’t it?
Eventually, her friend Zoe got her out on the ice to be a little more daring. We did figure out that Sam likes figure skating skates rather than ice hockey skates, so there is that. I promised her we would try to go again sometime and that I would get out there with her. Hopefully, I won’t wind up on my butt more than on my feet!

Poor Sam. She loves playing in the snow so much and yet, as cold as it has been, we have gotten so little snow. At least not any snow that she could play in. Recently, we did get the smallest amount of snow, and Sam was determined to play with it. She realized it was ridiculous, but she didn’t care and she insisted I put the pictures on her blog.
Here are her teeny tiny snowmen.
And her cakes….I don’t know that you want any with all the mud and dirt in them however…
Last but not least, her pizza! I will say, Sam has a good attitude. She makes lemonade from lemons!

Today at school the 3rd graders had an Ellis Island Simulation Day so that they could learn about what it was like for immigrants to arrive at Ellis Island. Prior to the day, each student had to decide what country they would be from, what their occupation is, and what they are bringing with them. They also had to dress in clothing appropriate for the 1900s. Sam decided she would be from Ireland and her job was a spinner. She brought her daughter with her, and also carried some food, some family photos and some yarn. I had printed out some old pictures of family when we were babies or very young (in black and white) that looked pretty 1900s if you ask me. Here is what Sam looked like that morning and the photos she brought.
When the kids started the simulation, they gathered in the lobby where they pretended to depart from the boat and enter Ellis Island.
Sam was not in this group, but rather over in the chairs in the lobby because she (along with only one other student in her class) were first-class passengers so they got seats! Sam was so excited when she came home with the passenger manifest the day before and saw that.
After getting off the boat, they cycled through stations: Registry Room, Legal Inspection Room, Manifest Check Room, Detainees Room, and the Medical Room. Sam’s name was changed to Samantha Myer and she was detained because they said she wasn’t walking right. 🙂
All the kids looked great and I hope they learned a lot about what it was like to arrive here a long time ago. It’s certainly a different situation today for immigrants, but at least they learned a little bit of history in a really fun way.
