Myrtle Beach (Part 1)!

| July 24, 2017

We just got back from Myrtle Beach! We had such a good time. It is the first time we have ever been on vacation as a family in an actual hotel! Or really, the first time we have taken a non-Jersey Shore vacation. We never would have even considered it, probably, but my boss Dan, and his wife Eileen, go every single year and they just really wanted another couple to vacation with. Dan travels so much for work, that he has a million (literally, I think) hotel points for Hilton, and since the Embassy Suites where they stay is a Hilton property, he said he could get our room for free if we wanted to go. We have known each other forever and have gotten to be friends, so Mark and I decided that we would have been crazy to not take him up on it, since we only had to pay airfare.

Packing is never fun, and the cats were not too happy to see suitcases come out. As you can see, Zach was doing his best to keep us from leaving!

Leave we did, though, and we made it to the airport in plenty of time. Sam absolutely loves the airport and I have no idea why. I guess just because it’s different. Does anyone love the airport? Just our kid I think.

I swear, her fascination with skeletons kills me. She found one! I think this was a Kiehl’s store or something. Crazy.

When it was time to board, Sam got all settled in to her window seat. She had her new travel Spirograph out and ready to go! She has been dying to use that on the plane. We came ready with lots of coloring and drawing materials, and of course, her Kindle.

I actually got time to read my magazine while Sam played. She just loves the beverage cart. Apple juice, please!

Here is where we stayed, or rather, the view from the elevator lobby. I am in the hotel overlooking the property which had two pools, two hot tubs and a water park. More on all that later…

The view from our balcony. Ahhhh….the ocean!

Sam liked our suite and that we had multiple rooms. Mark and I loved it too – at least when Sam fell asleep at night, we had some privacy to talk.

We hit the beach the next day and Sam immediately set out playing with Barbie. I was a little worried that she would make us crazy. I could only pack so many toys since we were flying, a few collapsible buckets, a few shovels and her Barbie, but she was so good the whole time. She never complained she was bored. There were a million perfect seashells to collect, so we did a lot of that, of course.

Sam tried boogie boarding for the first time. I can’t believe it! I never thought she’d be so brave. She didn’t love it, mostly because water kept splashing up her nose, but I think with a nose clip, she would be pretty good. At first she wouldn’t let Mark let go of the strap, but then she finally went on her own!

Do you love the goggles? She asked me to buy her a pair in the hotel shop to keep water from getting in her eyes. They were super cute, and cheap, so why not?

Sam and I did our usual wave jumping. I don’t know what I will do when she is too big for me to lift!

We wanted to send Grandmom a postcard through an app I have on my phone, and this is the picture she chose – her starfish pose. She is a nut.

We all loved our lounge chairs and umbrella, sitting waiting for us each day. What a way to relax at the beach!

I buried Sam, but not all the way. She was happy though. The sand was so different than in New Jersey. It brushed right off and didn’t stick at all (thank God).

Every day after being on the beach a while, we’d head to the pool. One day, a little tortoiseshell cat came walking by. It reminded us of Penny. 🙁

When I told Sam she could get in the hot tub, she was so excited. She’d never been in one before. This is her first time, and she was loving it! I told her we need to convince Daddy we need one for our backyard. 🙂

Hot tub selfie!

On this trip, even the pool water was warm so Sam was really willing to try a lot of swimming. She improved so much! I couldn’t believe it. She tried swimming above water by moving her arms, which she never wants to do, and even tried to master a handstand, just like her Daddy.

We borrowed Dan’s underwater camera for these shots!

I was so proud of how well Sam did with her swimming. She went underwater to dive in 5 feet of water, which is way more than she ever did before.

They had a kid’s activity tent and one day Mark took Sam to do tie dye shirts. It was a fun distraction for her and she got a great souvenir!

There was a lot to do, and one night we went to what is called Broadway at the Beach. It is as close to boardwalk-type activities as you can get for Sam. She really liked it, and it was a fun place to stroll around.

We found one of those penny machines so she got a new one for her growing collection.

Ha! This one is for Mommy. 🙂

There is a lake filled with fish sort of in the middle of everything, and machines that give you food so you can feed them. Sam loved that. Anytime we can feed animals, she’s all about it.

There were a lot of firsts on this trip for Sam too – her first cotton candy (thumbs down)…

and her first Hawaiian shaved ice (semi-thumbs up).

I think Sam’s favorite thing was this pick your own pearl thing. Basically, there is a tank full of oysters and you pick one and get to keep the pearl inside. The pearls are not perfectly round, but they are pearls nonetheless. The pearl could be white, pink, black or blue. I didn’t think she was likely to get a white one, so I warned her that we were doing it ONE TIME. Whatever she gets, she gets. She promised to not be disappointed no matter what.

She got a white one! The woman running the stand said it was only the second white one that day. Sam picked a mermaid necklace to display it in. She felt like the luckiest kid ever.

On the way home, we had to stop to let a flock of geese cross the road. Geesh guys, you have wings, fly!

We stopped for ice cream one night after dinner. It wasn’t Sam’s beloved soft serve swirl, but she rolled with it.

Back at the hotel, there is a lagoon/lake sort of thing next to the property. We went over to check it out one night and boy, was it full of ducks! They are nowhere to be seen until you come over. These ducks are not stupid. They know that human voices equals food! Sam was thrilled!

Her very, very favorite is baby duck. It was the only baby duck we saw, but boy, was Sam enamored with him or her! Baby duck made the whole thing, as far as Sam was concerned.

We walked the length of the lake and discovered a black swan also lived there! Crazy! None of us ever saw one before. It was so beautiful. Other than ducks, we only saw one goose and a whole lot of turtles. Lots and lots of turtles!

But boy, were there ducks! Mark actually ran to the store and bought Sam crackers so she could feed everyone. She had a blast. We were back there every single night so Sam could see and feed her little friends.

Grandmom asked Sam to write her a message in the sand, so she did. We framed it for Grandmom when we got home.

I don’t know how he does it, but Mark certainly has a knack for finding hermit crabs. He found her some!

Sam made a friend, Chloe, and they played for a while. It turns out they were from Lancaster. Small world…

More of Sam’s little friends, a lizard we saw over by the pools. There was a baby lizard, or a skink, we were told it was called, but he was too fast to photograph.

When we finally hit the water park one day, Sam tried the slide. She only went down twice, and the second time she hid her face so she wouldn’t get water in her eyes. I think I’d be freaked out going down blind, but she loved it.

Day after day, night after night was packed with activity. At dinner one night, the restaurant’s resident piano player let Sam sit with him. He even gave Sam his CD and played her some songs she would know (like from Beauty and Beast). She felt very special.

Here we all are after dinner. Someone was nice enough to take our photo.

Dan and Eileen. 🙂

After dinner, you guessed it, back to the lake. The ducks cracked her up.

They were very friendly birds, even the goose, which is odd. Geese can be kind of mean. This guy was friendly though.

The swan was super friendly! We quickly figured out he was very gentle and would take crackers out of your hand!

We were in South Carolina, and thus, fireworks stores abound. One night we stopped in one just to see what you can buy. Stupid Pennsylvania! You can’t buy anything. Mark was tempted to buy a few things and set them off (we were given info about where we could), but instead, we just got some super long sparklers for Sam to light on the beach. She was happy. It doesn’t take much. We did see some beach fireworks one night from our hotel window. That was awesome.

More photos to come!

Our Last Beach Memories of 2016

| September 2, 2016

We always make lots of good memories down the shore, and not just at the beach. We eat tons of ice cream, visit the boardwalk, shop, eat more ice cream…

On Sunday, we made sure we went to the boardwalk in Ocean City so that we could do all the things we normally do. We didn’t want to try to jam everything in, so we didn’t let Sam do any rides this time other than our family favorite – the Ferris Wheel!

DSC05078

I love this face – she was being tickled uncontrollably!

DSC05088

Family selfie! Sam looks so little in this picture. Her smile reminds me of the one she used to have when she was a tiny little girl, only a few years old.

DSC05093

Our girl, always ready to strike a pose.

DSC05091

Sammy selfie time!

DSC05095

Although we didn’t do rides, Mark did take Sam on one sort of ride – Go Karts! It’s something he has been wanting to do for a while because he used to ride them as a kid. Sam loved it! Zooming around the track with her Daddy at the wheel. She came off all smiles.

DSC05076

DSC05072

Sam also wanting to go skeleton golfing again, but honestly, it was a pretty lame golf course, so we told her we’d go to the pirate golf in Sea Isle. Sam didn’t do so well, but Mark got two holes in one, and I got one. Sam thought it was hysterical that one of Mark’s balls went into the water and she got to fish it out. Hmmm…maybe it got there on purpose….

Sam is doing the limbo. I didn’t realize it was a necessary skill for mini golfing…

DSC05127

When we were on the last hole, we stopped to be pirates and take some pictures. I asked Sam why she kept covering her eye. She told me, “It’s my eye patch, Silly!” Of course.

DSC05128

DSC05129

On our last real night, we went to the Promenade in Sea Isle so Sam could play arcade games. She loves this big wheel where you just spin and hopefully win a bunch of tickets. This spin was a particularly big one, based on how she’s hanging off the handle!

DSC05162

Her Daddy, Champion of Claw Games, won her a doggie!

DSC05168

After the games, we went to visit turtle…

DSC05169

…and to sail away in the boat. Ah, traditions, traditions.

DSC05172

On a final note, one morning, Sam was just drawing and she did this great picture of her giraffe. I just had to share. I think it’s pretty good! When she takes her time, she draws very well.

DSC05052

Well, vacation is over and we are back in school mode. I finally found out who Sam’s first grade teacher will be and now it’s back to Springfield to meet her teacher!

Is Summer Really Over?

| September 2, 2016

Oh, but alas, it is. We finished our last beach vacation for the year. We went down the shore again while Krista and Adam had their house, on Saturday, so that we had as much time as possible since we needed to leave by mid-week so that we could be home for Sam’s meet the teacher day. Thankfully, the weather was beautiful, and the water was as warm as could be – about 76-78 degrees! Gorgeous and no rain at all.

Sam spent time doing what she normally does. Like this. Getting as sandy as humanly possible.

DSC05067

Strangely, the first day, there were a ton of washed up jellyfish on the beach. Only that one day though. They are kind of gross, but Sam liked exploring them. I’m just glad they were gone by the next day!

DSC05071

Ryder loves the beach and he and Sam played the whole time. Right now though, he was more interested in his cookie. 🙂

DSC05057

And his Grandmom, Loretta!

DSC05060

Mark spent most of his time doing exactly this. Hmmm….what is wrong with this picture?

DSC05061

Although, while Ryder and Sam played, Krista and I weren’t exactly working hard.

DSC05146

We did get Sam into the water a lot to do her “wave jumping”, but boy was it rough! Hurricane Hermine was coming and the waves were crazy. Higher than normal and they could knock you down so easily.

DSC05099

We only had one day where we really saw the jetty so Sam and Mark went exploring. There wasn’t a heck of a lot to see, honestly, not like some years. And the beach has been sadly lacking in sea shells. I guess it’s good that the beach is getting cleaned up, but it is sad for the kiddos who like to collect shells.

DSC05098

Time for a family portrait!

DSC05107

Maddox had seen a lot of kids using body boards since there were actually some waves. Adam bought him one and he did pretty well for his first time out. I think he caught a few waves!

DSC05110

On our next to last day, it was very odd. I was sleeping (shockingly, Sam actually let us sleep a lot on this trip) and Mark came in and told me there was almost no beach. The incoming storm was making the sea crazy. High tide came up really high and a lot of the water hadn’t washed out. We usually wind up with a shallow pool of water somewhere on the beach every trip, but this was insane. There literally was almost no beach. You can see how big this pool of water was that Mark and Sam are standing in. Then there is some beach, then the ocean.

DSC05132

It was crazy deep too! Usually, it pools around your ankles or low calves at most.

DSC05134

Pretty early in the day, they came and dug a trench to let the water run back to the ocean. It worked pretty well. The lake stayed, but by the time we were done our beach day, it was much narrower and not nearly as deep.

DSC05138

DSC05139

Something we hadn’t done in a while! Sam’s shadow is catching up to us…She’s growing so fast.

DSC05136

While the lake was there, Rich took Sam and Ryder to play. They liked sailing Sam’s boat.

DSC05142

DSC05184

Two best buddies. 🙂 Sam had so much fun playing with Ryder. She will be a good babysitter one day. In the afternoon while Ryder was napping, Sam was so lost.

DSC05145

Maddox took some time out from the water to hang out with his Grandmom.

DSC05148

Since Maddox wasn’t using his body board for the moment, Adam took Ryder and then Sam on a ride. Sam liked it, Ryder not so much.

DSC05152

Sam did keep busy, but Mark and I both noticed that she doesn’t play like she used to. I brought many less toys down to the beach then normal, and even less of them actually made it to the sand. Most days, she wanted her Barbies, a bucket, a shovel and not much else. It is yet one more sign she is growing up. We don’t even make many sand castles. I think next year, we probably won’t be bringing much. Mark and I are going to try to bring more “family” activities. She likes playing with this water bouncing ball Mark bought on our last trip down, we sometimes play paddle ball, and we saw some people playing bocce. I would rather do those types of things on the beach anyway. Heck, some day not too far off, Sam will be more interested in sitting by herself reading a book or a magazine than doing anything with us!

DSC05154

One toy we did bring a few days was her sand buggy. Since cars need somewhere to go, I made a system of roads. Sam liked it and so did her car.

DSC05174

I can’t believe our beach time is over! Noooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last Day – Goodbye Beach!

| July 10, 2016

The last day at the beach! It’s so sad every year. It comes so quickly. You just start to settle in and have fun…and it’s time to go home. The last day was the day the water was the warmest. It was finally water you didn’t mind getting in. At least we had that one day.

DSC04912

Sam went in pretty far with Mark this year, which surprised me. Well, not in this photo, but she did!

DSC04927

Back on the beach, it was time to bury Mommy. I hadn’t let her do it the whole trip, so I thought, oh, why not. It’s just sand. Yeah, easy to say until you are covered then you regret it…It makes her happy.

DSC04930

Our last night, on the way to get our last ice cream, we stopped, per Sam’s request, at Grammie’s bench. She started calling my mom Grammy, and I have no idea why, I think just to be silly, so she wanted to take photos there.

Grandmom and her best girl.

DSC_6285

We needed to take a new photo on Sam’s bench too, of course!

Mark took this on the way home. We love how, together, Sam and Grandmom make a perfect Stars and Stripes. 🙂

The end to another vacation full of fun and memories. Every second is exhausting, but it’s totally worth it!

We miss you, Kitties!

| July 10, 2016

On our first day at the beach, Sam, my mom and I went grocery shopping and stopped at the store next door like we always do. Sam stopped to look at the postcards that are right by the front door. We used to make it a point to buy a postcard or two for Sam to send to her Poppy. It seemed so sad to me to not have that to do this year. To try to soften the blow, so to speak, I asked Sam if she wanted to send one to Zach and Penelope. We had to board them at the vet and none of us were happy about it, but we just didn’t know what else to do. We had no one to watch them and it is important to us that they are safe and well cared for.

Sam loved the idea! Here is the postcard she picked, and what she wrote.

DSC04506

I did write it for her since there is not a lot of room, but she wrote her name and covered it with hearts.

DSC04507

You have no idea how happy we were when, on the day before we were to leave,  my phone binged with a text message. It was from an unknown number that turned out to be one of the vet techs at the vet. She sent me this photo and message:

IMG_2229

“We cannot believe we got mail from you guys! We were so excited and showed all our other friends here! Wow…we feel like VIPs. We must confess that our reading skills aren’t terrific so we are gonna send you another picture of the nice nurse, Jess, who read every word to us! We love you! Headbonks and Purrs, Zach & Penelope xoxoxoxo”

A few minutes later, I got this photo and message:

IMG_2230

“Okay, so we asked Jess to read it to us about 10 times…it was so much fun!! We miss you but we are very happy that you are having a nice vacation. We are having a pretty nice time here…getting spoiled rotten 🙂 XO Penelope & Zach.”

It made our day! All of us, but especially Sam. She missed her kittens so much and was so happy to see that they got her mail. I love our vet and this is just one of the many reasons why. 🙂
