Yesterday Sam tried ice skating for the first time! She has been begging me for years and we just never manage to go. One of her classmates had a birthday party at an ice skating rink and Sam was so excited! She tried to get me to go with her, but um…no. The first time I am on ice skates will not be at a school party! She did ok for her first time. She only fell once or twice, and although she wasn’t exactly gliding along, she did manage to shuffle her way around the ice.
After a while she wanted to try one of the walker sort of things. I don’t think it really helped much, but she wanted to try.
All the girls seemed to have a good time, and that’s what it’s about, isn’t it?
Eventually, her friend Zoe got her out on the ice to be a little more daring. We did figure out that Sam likes figure skating skates rather than ice hockey skates, so there is that. I promised her we would try to go again sometime and that I would get out there with her. Hopefully, I won’t wind up on my butt more than on my feet!

Today at school the 3rd graders had an Ellis Island Simulation Day so that they could learn about what it was like for immigrants to arrive at Ellis Island. Prior to the day, each student had to decide what country they would be from, what their occupation is, and what they are bringing with them. They also had to dress in clothing appropriate for the 1900s. Sam decided she would be from Ireland and her job was a spinner. She brought her daughter with her, and also carried some food, some family photos and some yarn. I had printed out some old pictures of family when we were babies or very young (in black and white) that looked pretty 1900s if you ask me. Here is what Sam looked like that morning and the photos she brought.
When the kids started the simulation, they gathered in the lobby where they pretended to depart from the boat and enter Ellis Island.
Sam was not in this group, but rather over in the chairs in the lobby because she (along with only one other student in her class) were first-class passengers so they got seats! Sam was so excited when she came home with the passenger manifest the day before and saw that.
After getting off the boat, they cycled through stations: Registry Room, Legal Inspection Room, Manifest Check Room, Detainees Room, and the Medical Room. Sam’s name was changed to Samantha Myer and she was detained because they said she wasn’t walking right. 🙂
All the kids looked great and I hope they learned a lot about what it was like to arrive here a long time ago. It’s certainly a different situation today for immigrants, but at least they learned a little bit of history in a really fun way.

Each year at Sam’s school there is a contest where the students can submit artwork to be considered for the cover art of the yearbook. Last year Sam did not enter (I am not even sure it was on her radar) but this year she was determined. The theme this year is Everyday Scenic Superheroes. Here is what Sam drew.
She really wants to win, and I told her a million times that she can’t be disappointed if she doesn’t, because even though her drawing is EXCELLENT in my opinion, you never know. She wants to try though, and I am all for it. Even if she doesn’t win, there is a chance she could get an honorable mention and still be inside. Fingers crossed!

Sam’s school party was today! It was so much fun! I love being homeroom mom and getting to see her enjoying her day with her classmates. As a craft, they made snowglobes! Sam made hers to look like our family, complete with cats!
I had brought along some photo props just as a lark, and they were the biggest hit! The kids spent so much time hamming it up. I have a million pictures, but here are the ones with Sam.
After their snacks and whatnot, I gave her teacher the class gift (a gift card), and this ornament that I found for her.
What a great party! I really hope I get to be homeroom mom next year. There are only so many years I can get that chance to be so involved and see what goes on in her world. I’ll take what I can get!

I took Sam to school for the annual holiday shop and Holidays Around the World. She likes the whole event, but her main reason for going is the holiday shop so she can pick out little presents for everyone. This year she went with her own money, not mine, and I promised her I would not follow her so she could have everything be a surprise. She did pick out things for me, Mark, and Grandmom and of course, things for herself…
When we first got to school, we had to make a few stops for some cute photo ops!
We did shop, but we also did the Holidays Around the World. This one was one of her favorites – Aruba!
I didn’t think she’d want to go see Santa, but she did. They had a nice long chat about how she is doing in school and his expectations for behavior. Thanks, Santa for the assist!
