Adventures in solid food

| January 29, 2010

Or what passes for “solid” in the baby universe.  It’s really more mush.  Today, for the very first time, Samantha got to eat something other than formula from her bottle.  She had rice cereal!  It went pretty well, all things considered.  I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to eat for the first time when you are a baby.

We strapped Sam into her new highchair, which we just got a few days ago.  I think she looks super cute all ready to go.  She actually looked really excited at first, especially when I put her bib on, which to Sam is always a sign of good things to come.

Sam was NOT too thrilled with the concept of a spoon in her mouth.  This is what she generally looked like with each spoonful.  You can just see her thinking, “Ewww…this is gross!”  Despite what it looks like, she wasn’t crying, just making faces!

A lot of it came out in the first few spoons, but she got a lot better at keeping it in her mouth.  After she sort of learned to keep the cereal in her mouth, she adjusted pretty well, and seemed happy.

She ate a decent amount for her first time.  Tomorrow we will try again.  We are going to give her cereal twice a day so hopefully she will get used to it soon so she can move on to more tasty things like jarred fruits and veggies.

After her meal, she looked happy, don’t you think?  But she was still happiest about getting her bottle, which she had a few minutes later.  I am proud of my little munchkin.  Go Samantha!

My little belly sleeper

| January 29, 2010

For a few weeks now, Sam has been making us crazy because she has learned to roll over onto her tummy from her back, but she can’t roll back. She cries and we have to keep going to rescue her.  It’s not a big deal during the day when she is just in her Pack and Play or on her mat, but at night when she is in her crib, and we are all trying to sleep, it can be really trying.

The other night she kept rolling onto her belly and she was really freaking out me and Mark because she would lie there looking sort of asleep, but with her face all smushed into the mattress.  So I kept rolling her back onto her back, and she’d go right back onto her belly again until she got so tired she’d just stay put on her back.

Well, last night she had a little trouble settling down, but she finally did at about 8:30 (she goes down at 7:00).  She was asleep on her side happy as could be.  I woke up at 2 o’clock this morning to feed Muffin (I was happy he let me sleep that long!) and I went to check on Sam, as I always do every time I wake up in the middle of the night.  I was shocked to see her snoozing away on her tummy with her head to the side, just like it was supposed to be!  She didn’t cry, at least not that I heard (and I hear every peep she makes, I swear), so she must have finally figured out how to move her head to the side on her own.  I checked on her every hour after that, I swear, I was so nervous.  But she did great!  After I fed her (at about 2:30 when she woke up) I put her back down on her back and she wound up sleeping on her tummy again.  Now if she could just figure out how to roll back onto her back when she wants to, we would be golden!

I plan on spending the next 4 days I have at home letting her spend as much time on her mat as possible so that she gets practice rolling around.  Hopefully, she will be a quick learner, as she usually is!  She looked really cute sleeping that way. I will have to take her picture.

Oh, and as a side note, tonight we are going to try cereal for the first time. Wish us all luck!

Sam’s 4-month checkup

| January 25, 2010

Sam went to the pediatrician today for her 4 month visit. I was afraid it was going to be another long cry-fest like the last time, but she was so good!  She weighs 12 lbs. 13 oz now and is 25″ long!  The nurse practitioner that she saw said she looks great, is growing wonderfully, and she is healthy as can be.  We talked about how Sam rolls over from her back to her belly now, but gets upset when she can’t roll back, and the nurse said to just hang in there with her, that she will eventually learn how to go back on her own.  Yeah…easy for her to say.  She’s not the one who has to keeep rescuing Sam!  She got another vaccination today, but only one, since they were out of the other one she was due for, so I have to bring her back in about a week or two for the other shot.  That’s not necessarily a bad thing though, since only getting one shot, she didn’t really cry.  I liked the way the nurse did things today.  She basically did the whole exam letting me hold Sam on my lap, which I think is better and more comforting for the babies.

In exciting news, Sam can start cereal now!  I got instructions for how much to try to feed her, and if all goes well, and she is doing ok, in a few weeks I can try baby food (fruits and veggies).  So this week I am going to try to get some cereal and see how it goes!  I can’t wait to see her face the first time we put a spoon in there 🙂

Pajama Party!

| January 19, 2010

Pam has mentioned on the blog before about how she love the pajamas and baby clothes from Hatley. They do make really cute clothes, most of them with adorable animal prints. Occasionally they sell matching sets for moms and infants and of course when Pam saw these she had to buy some. Sam is finally fitting in her 3-6 month outfits which were some of the first Hatley clothes Pam bought for her.  This weekend they modeled the first matching set she bought which had cute bears on them. I photographed them together in my new makeshift studio I set up in the basement. The photos came out great, they both look so adorable!

I think this first one is quite possible my favorite photo of the two of them together:

She is really laughing here:

They also modeled another set with fish:

Random Acts of Cuteness

| January 18, 2010

It’s been a while since we posted any new pictures of Sam, but we have been so busy!  But that doesn’t mean we haven’t been taking pictures of her left and right.  So I decided to just post a bunch of the random snapshots we have been taking lately.  She is getting so big as you can see from the pictures.  She is learning more and more every day — she has found her feet, she giggles a lot more now (sometimes you don’t even have to be doing anything–she just cracks herself up), and if you hold her up she really stands well on her feet.  Her legs used to buckle all the time, but not anymore.  Mark and I said how funny it would be if babies could actually walk when they are this small.  Can you imagine such a little tiny person running around the house?

This one is of Sam on her playmat.  She was having such a good time, then just conked out!

She also sits up really well on her own now.  She doesn’t topple over like she used to.  Here she is staring at the TV.

Sam likes to take some of her naps on her daddy.  She always puts her face right up next to his. It is so sweet. I know Mark loves it too.

This is one of the only times Sam actually held her bottle all by herself.  She always has her hands on her bottle though, so she’s learning!

In this one, she fell asleep in her swing. I just think it’s funny that before she fell asleep, she was holding and staring intently at the flap that covers the clips that hold her in.  It’s like she was reading a book.  She feel asleep with the flap still hanging in mid-air in her hand.

Last but not least, here we are this weekend enjoying dinner at one of our favorite Italian restaurants — Cascata Caffe.  Sam didn’t order off the menu, but she is happy nonetheless!
