5 month birthday

Tuesday was Samantha’s 5 month birthday.  How time has flown!  In such a short amount of time, she has changed so much.  Today Mark took some photos of her sitting in her Bumbo seat that her cousin Maddox was nice enough to lend her now that he has outgrown the need for it.  Since Sam still can’t sit up on her own, we thought it would be nice for her to use the Bumbo to sit independently sometimes.  She seems to like it.  Here she is!  As you can see, she is sporting sort of a baby Mohawak — she has rubbed off so much of her hair on the back and sides from sleeping that way, and sitting in her various seats, that the hair on top is a lot longer now.  I have no idea when it will grow back in, but for now, she has a new style : )

Today was a big day, eating-wise. I was feeding her oatmeal and some pears this morning, and for the first time ever she actually opened her mouth for me so the spoon could go in!  Usually I am trying to shove it in between her half closed lips or sneaking it in when she is smiling (which seems kind of like cheating, but hey, you do what you have to do).  It was so cute.  Not only did she open her mouth for food, but she kept grabbing the spoon!  At one point I just gave the spoon to her with no food on it and she shoved it in her mouth.  I think she put it in a little too far though, because she yanked it out and had such a look of disgust on her face.  It was adorable.  She ate a good bit, which I was happy about.  I think she is finally getting the hang of actually eating food instead of just drinking it.

Sam was sitting happily on my lap most of the time during our dinner.  I had chicken tenders and french fries and the entire time she kept grabbing my plate.  At one point she actually got her hand on my chicken.  She is showing such an interest in real food now.  The best part was when I showed her a french fry up close because her head kept craning to see what I was doing every time I put a bite in my mouth.  Quick as a bunny she grabbed that fry, broke about an inch size piece off, and it was just about in her mouth before I grabbed it!  That little munchkin sure is fast!

It is so amazing seeing how much she has learned in her short little life so far.  Just last month she would never have shown any interest in my food, and certainly was not grabbing things off the table.  I was sitting in her room with her this morning, rocking her to sleep for a nap, and I started thinking about how much of a personality she has.  And it just astounds me.  Babies are such incredible little miracles. How can someone so tiny, who has been alive for such a short time, have such a unique personality of her own?  And she really does. I thought back to when I was pregnant with her, and Mark and I couldn’t wait to discover what she would be like, what kind of little girl she would be.  And now we know!  And it is really wonderful to know our little person.  All her quirks, her likes, her dislikes, her funny little habits.  And we love every single bit.
