Springtime with Samantha

| May 7, 2010

Today to kick off Mother’s Day weekend we went outside to take some pictures of me and Samantha in the great outdoors.  We have always wanted to take some photos outside because the natural light and background is always so nice, but our weather never seems to cooperate.  Too dark, too cold, too windy, too hot, etc. etc. etc…. But tonight we had some luck.  Sam was still sort of awake and smiley, despite the fact that it was almost her bedtime by the time the sun was just right, so we went outside to see what kind of pictures we could get.  The first few photos I think are my favorite because we are standing in front of the same rose bush that Mark took photos of me in front of when I was pregnant with Sam.  The rose bush photo of me while I was pregnant is one of my favorite “belly photos” and now I am holding my little girl in my arms. 🙂

In the next few photos we are just hanging out in the grass.  I was showing Sam some clovers, which she seemed to like, but since she was very interested in the roses (as you can see from the pictures above) Mark picked one for her.  She liked that much better.  She is a smart girl — she’s all about getting flowers from her favorite man!

Here’s one last shot of us enjoying the remaining sunshine before it was time for Sam to go to bed.  She had a long day.  Not only is her one bottom tooth coming through, but so is the one next to it!  It was very exciting to see the tip of it poking through her gums this morning.  I was very surprised because it definitely was not there yesterday.  It is not so exciting for Sam who is very uncomfortable and isn’t sleeping well.  My poor baby doesn’t understand why she needs teeth, but I keep telling her to hang in there — there are so many yummy things to eat!

Silly Sam

| May 5, 2010

I was playing around with Sam the other day and she was just full of giggles and smiles.  Sometimes she likes to be really silly.  Here is a funny picture I took of her (so sad, but can you tell the difference in quality between my pictures and Mark’s?).  She has her links on her ears and her mirror on her head.  She is such a ham!

Growing up so fast

| May 3, 2010

Sam is growing up so quickly right before our eyes.  This weekend, Mark and I had to lower her crib mattress and take the bassinet out of her pack and play.  She is slowly figuring out how to get into a sitting position from a laying down position, and we were afraid she’d finally actually do it and somehow fall out!  It doesn’t take much to get from sitting to standing so we are trying to be really careful.  Sam pushes herself up onto one knee and both hands all the time now when she is in the crib.  If she could figure out that all she needs to do is pull up her other knee toward her chest, she’d be up on all fours in no time.  I have seen her on her hands and knees a few times so I think she’ll be trying to crawl soon.

Also, today, we were practicing drinking out of a cup.  She did pretty well, actually.  She hasn’t quite mastered a sippy cup but she is always interested in our glasses and cups when we drink.  So today I let her hold my glass of water (with my assistance, naturally) and have a few sips.  She dribbled a lot down her chin, but she did ok.  I then gave her a smaller, child size cup that has handles and she practiced with that too.

We decided it may be time to start clearing out some of the things she doesn’t use any more like her bouncer chair, her swing and her play gym.  It is so sad that she is growing so fast and won’t be using these things that she loved any longer, but we are so excited to see how well and how wonderfully she is progressing and growing.  We can’t wait to see what she does next!

Trying out my new franken-brella thingy

I watched a really good instructional video this weekend on portable lighting techniques which prompted me to Frankenstein-up a small portable strobe umbrella that I can take outside and use wirelessly with my camera. Here are some of my test shots inside:

Looking good so far! Next we went outside to backlight Sam with that magic sunset light:

Here she is trying to eat some azaleas that Pam picked for her to explore:

Pretty good results for some quick and dirty experimentation! With a little more work, this should be a great set up for quick lighting outside when I am too lazy to run extension cords outside for my big studio lights.

The eaglets have landed

| May 2, 2010

Sam has some really special visitors in the area that we went to visit yesterday at the Heinz Wildlife Refuge. Can you spot them?

What, you don’t see them? Look closer!

In the upper right of the image there is a bald eagle nest! That’s right, for only the third time in 200 years, there is a nesting pair of bald eagles in the Philadelphia region. The nest here has two small male eaglets! Look to the left and down slightly from the nest, just to the right of the tree trunk. There you can see a bald eagle in all his glory! As a father, I like to imagine that is the male, watching guard over his growing young family. This is an incredible sight for us, only the second eagle I have ever seen in the wild and Pam and Sam’s first! It was well worth the three-mile round trip hike in 90 degree heat. Doesn’t Sam looked thrilled?

I suspect we’ll be seeing lots more of that happy face in the future as I drag her around to revel in nature’s grandeur.
