We like this one

| August 27, 2010

We grabbed this frame today. We tried to think of something creative to say but frankly, we are too tired because someone kept us running all day and hasn’t slept through the night for the last few weeks so neither have we.  But we like this photo 🙂

Sorry honey!

Pam and I put off buying a gate for as long as possible but the time has come. We liked letting Sam crawl all around the first floor and followed behind her happily but she is just getting too fast and too inquisitive for her own good. So, we gated off the space between the kitchen and family room. It is really hard to find gates for our circa 1938 era house. One doorway is only 24″ and the other is 92″! Of course, most gates don’t fit these sizes but we were finally able to find one for the bigger doorway, now we just need to find a solution for the smaller one.

Sam is of course not too thrilled with the new gate but is taking it in stride. I tried to get a photo of her checking it out today and in between some really pooky expressions, I got one really cute frame. Hope you like it.

No rest for the weary

| August 26, 2010

Sam had been sleeping so well.  I knew it was not destined to last.  After a few weeks of sleeping through the night, and taking really great, long naps, her teething started again.  I think she has something coming on the top, but it is so hard to tell.  She has all the signs though — disrupted sleep, generally grumpiness, chewing on anything and everything, and the awful sounding grinding of the teeth she does have.  Mark and I are so exhausted.  Sam is having the worst time sleeping and that means we are too.  Of course, Sam is lucky enough to be able to take a nap to recuperate, which we can’t do.  But that’s the luxurious life of  a baby!  I am hoping whatever is coming will pop through soon so we all get back to normal.

Thankfully, the teething is not affecting her eating habits, which it has been known to do.  Sam has been showing more and more interest in table food lately.  She doesn’t eat a lot of anything, but she has been more willing to try a lot of things. I have been trying to keep a list in my head of what she has had so far.  I think this encompasses it:

-carrots

-green beans

-french fries

-pizza

-garlic bread

-pasta

-lettuce

-mashed potatoes

-Cheerios

-Nature’s Promise veggie sticks

-chocolate cookies

-egg

-watermelon

-soft pretzels

-tortilla chips

-chicken

Now, this list is just things she has actually willingly put in her mouth.  I think there are a few other things like cheese, yogurt, and some fruits that I have shoved in there that she alternatively was or wasn’t too thrilled about.  But she’s getting there!  Admittedly, the list does not always contain the most nutritious of items, but at this point, I am just trying to get her to eat anything on her own without much care for what it is.  Hopefully soon she will be eating enough table food at least once per day that I can consider it a meal!

Happy Birthday, Zephyr!

| August 22, 2010

Today is our little girl Zephyr’s 12th birthday. I can’t even believe it.  In so many ways she seems like a little kitten.  I still remember the day we brought her home.

Like every year since she was one year old, I have baked her an angel food cake for her birthday.  She actually likes angel food cake, so it has become a real tradition.  This was the first year that Sam was able to come as Zephyr’s guest, so it was an extra special birthday celebration.  Sam’s present to her was that she tried to not chase Zephyr or touch her food.  It didn’t go so well, but I think Sam tried.

Here are the party pictures.

Happy, happy birthday, Zephyr!  You have brought us more joy than we ever would have thought possible.  We are lucky to have you.  We love you, little StripeyPants!

Up, up and away!

| August 22, 2010

Since Sam started climbing stairs this weekend, we thought we’d let her try in our house to see how well she did without the carpet.  As you can see, she did great!  Of course, she needed some incentive to start moving, so Mark left his camera strap on one of the higher stairs. Sam has this crazy obsession with straps of all kinds, so off she went!

I think this one is so cute because her hand is up so you can actually see that she is climbing.

I was so nervous I was right behind her the whole time after she got more than a few steps up.  She gets tired and stops and tries to sit down and half the time her butt is hanging off the step.  She hasn’t quite learned yet that she could go tumbling backwards.  How to teach her that, I have no idea, but I can see that soon I am going to have to help her learn to come back down.  While we were at the shore, I helped Maddox learn, so it’s Samantha’s turn.

This one is cute because you can see Zephyr at the bottom of the steps watching Sam (and you can also see the treasured strap).

I can’t believe how well she climbs and how quickly she is doing it now.  A few days ago, she had no idea how to climb one stair and now she is up like a flash.  I keep thinking one day Sam is going to start walking and I will just be shocked when it happens.  I am so proud of all of her accomplishments, but at the same time, I wish she wasn’t growing up so fast.  I really enjoy getting to know her personality (and boy, she really has her own personality), but I do miss the days when she was a helpless little bundle who loved nothing more than lying in my arms staring at my face.  Now she is so excited about moving and crawling and climbing and standing that she is so wiggly it is hard to hold onto her.  But that’s ok.  I know that every new thing she accomplishes is a positive thing because it means she is healthy and strong and developing just the way she should, and there is nothing better than that.
