Happy Thanksgiving!

| November 26, 2010

This Thanksgiving was such a special one.  It was Sam’s second, but really the first that she could participate in.  It was a smaller than usual gathering since Krista, Adam and Maddox spent the day at Adam’s brother’s house, but we had a great day anyway.  Sam’s grandparents couldn’t wait to see her especially since we told them she had started trying to walk.  Thankfully, she did take some steps for them so they could see her progress.  Here are some pictures of Sam with her family, whom she is very thankful for. 🙂

Sam was happy to see her Grandmom and Poppy since she hasn’t been over there during the day for a while.  My mom can’t wait to get her back next week — Grandmom and Poppy miss her terribly!

Sam’s Mom Mom and Pop Pop brought Analiece with them and Sam had so much fun having another kid around to play with.  Analiece spent so much time trying to amuse Sam, making her laugh, and reading books to her.  It was really nice seeing the cousins interact.  Even though Analiece is so much older than Sam, she was so great with her.  She played with Sam and was really wonderful at keeping Sam amused during the long day. Mark and I were so busy with dinner, it was nice to have someone else watch her for a while.  Analiece read Sam a few of her favorite pop-up books.  It was a really cute thing to watch.

Sam doesn’t see her Mom Mom and Pop Pop as often, but when she does, she is so happy they are there for hugs and kisses. 🙂  I think this is such a great photo — you can see the love going both ways.

Here’s our yummy turkey (which Sam was shoveling in!)

And the proud chef, who always does a great job, not just on Thanksgiving, but every day.

We weren’t sure how well Sam would do with eating. She likes a lot of what we had, carrots, potatoes, beans, etc., but not necessarily cooked the way they were cooked.  She did so well!  She ate a ton of turkey and liked the vegetables and the stuffing too.

Mark and I are always thankful for so many things in our lives. We are so lucky after all.  We have an amazing family, good jobs, a beautiful home, a sweet cat, and so many other things.  But most of all, we are so thankful for our beautiful Sam.  About a million times yesterday, I just had to grab her and hug her to tell her how lucky I feel to have her in my life.  There were so many times that I never thought that I would have a photo like the one below, me and Mark with our little miracle.  For years and years, every Thanksgiving would go by and I would have to remind myself that I do have things to be thankful for, even though I didn’t have the one thing I wanted most.  Now look at what I have!

Your mom and dad love you, Samantha, more than you could ever realize. You have made our dreams come true.

First Steps!

| November 23, 2010

Sam took her first steps today completely unassisted!!!!  I was in the kitchen throwing a stew together and Sam was nearby playing.  She stood up in the middle of the floor, which she has been doing a lot lately, and decided she wanted to get into the cabinet where we keep our pots and some of the things she likes to play with. She wasn’t near enough to reach the cabinet door, so she took one, two, very tiny, very tentative steps toward the cabinet until she was able to stretch out her hand to reach it.  I was so lucky I happened to look down at her when she stood up so I could see it.  Mark was working downstairs so I called up to him and when he came up, we stood Sam up on her feet and she took a tiny little step toward him.  It was so exciting for all of us (I think more so for us than Sam, actually).  We practiced with her a bunch more times and she took a few more steps but you could tell the whole effort was exhausting because she wouldn’t do it again after a while.  Her steps are super cute – so, so tiny that she is almost more shuffling her feet than lifting them.  You can tell she is just trying it out for size.  We are going to practice a lot with her over the next few days.  Maybe she will show off for her grandparents on Thanksgiving!  Go Sam!  Congratulations!!

14 months old today

| November 23, 2010

Today Sam is 14 months old.  She has changed so much even since her first birthday.   There are so many things she does now that show me how big she has gotten.  Her personality keeps showing itself all the time.  She is a really funny little girl.  One of her favorite things to do now is shake her head “no”.  She doesn’t really mean no, she just does it because she likes it.  If you shake your head back and forth with her, she laughs and laughs.  She really loves it when you imitate her.  She thinks it is the funniest thing ever.  I have tried to get her to shake “yes” but she hasn’t quite figured that out.

She has been eating really well and trying more things all the time.  She has learned to like chicken and she really loves ham!  She also had pork and seemed to like it a lot.  I was worried because she didn’t seem to want to try any meats at all, but she definitely does now.

One of the cutest things she does that really shows how big she is getting is learning to talk.  She says words, but none very consistently.  She will say them only when she feels like it, so to speak.  So far, I think she pretty definitely has said Cat, Diaper, Mama, Dad or Dada (no Daddy, just Dad), Yes, and Banana (which she sometimes calls Nanana).  She babbles all the time.  It is so frustrating because she is trying so hard to tell us things, and we have no idea what she is saying.  It will be fun to have real conversations with her.

I am looking forward to tomorrow, Thanksgiving Day.  Last year she was so small, but this year she will be shoveling turkey and stuffing into her mouth.  I can’t wait!

Winter is Coming

| November 21, 2010

We have this lovely Japanese Maple tree in the front yard. It has deep purple leaves in the summer that turn to a vibrant red in the fall. It holds on to its leaves for a long time; when its leaves drop I know winter is almost upon us.

The Maple tree gave up its leaves this week so we went outside to play in them a bit before raking them to the curb. Sam was enamored with the colorful display and we had a fun morning rolling around in the brisk fall air. This photo is my favorite from the morning:

Simply Samantha

| November 17, 2010

Mark was home with Sam yesterday because my mom had a doctor’s appointment (unfortunately, she is having surgery on Friday to have her gall bladder removed). It was such a horrible, rainy, cold day.  Since they couldn’t go anywhere, which was Mark’s original plan, he decided what better way to spend the day than by taking some photos of his little girl.  Here are just a few of our favorites.  I think she looks so beautiful.  All the black really emphasizes her gorgeous red hair.  She is so unique in her appearance that we can’t help but always tell her how beautiful she is. Just as often though, I try to remember to tell her how funny, and smart, and sweet, and clever she is.  She is all of those things and more.  Everyone always tells me how pretty Sam is and how she could be a model, how she could be in commercials, how her photos could win contests, and that is all probably true.  But her beauty is such a small part of who she is, and to Mark and I, the least significant.  She is an amazing little girl who is going to grow up to be an amazing woman. I can’t wait to see how she turns out.  I do know she will make me proud.
