How did she get so big?

| December 22, 2010

Sam is getting to be such a big girl now, it is hard to believe she is not a baby anymore.  Mark and I were looking at pictures from last Christmas, and she is so little!  Sam doesn’t even look like the same person anymore.  Every day she does things that show us how fast she is growing up and it reminds me to cherish every second because time goes by before you know it.

Last night, I was feeding Sam some oatmeal and for the first time she kept grabbing at the spoon because she wanted to feed herself.  She is defnitely not capable of actually holding a spoon on her own without spilling food everywhere, but she had the desire to try, that’s for sure. I let her hold the spoon and I sort of held it with her and guided it to her mouth.  She looked so happy with each spoonful!  I bought her some toddler forks and spoons so I think at mealtime it might be time to let her start practicing.

I had mentioned before how she is starting to imitate us a lot.  Well, now she imitates Zephyr!  When Zephyr meows (which she does quite often….) Sam meows too.  It is sort of just a modification of the “Owww” sound she has been making, but you can tell she means it to be a meow since she looks right at Zephyr when she does it.  The other morning, I went to get Sam up from her nap and Zephyr was upstairs napping too.  Zephyr heard me coming and jumped down off of the bed and meowed really loudly. Immediately after that, I heard a soft, “meooowwwww” come from Sam’s room.  She is so adorable.

Our little one is STILL not walking, which I thought would have happened by now, but she is content to cruise along holding onto furniture, her push walker, or us (whatever is handy).  She takes a few tentative steps on her own, but is not confident enough to really walk on her own yet.  We’re working on it!

Oh, and one more bottom molar is poking through, this time on the left.  I figured it out when I was trying to clean her teeth and she bit me. Yikes!  I will be glad when she is done with the teething, and I think she will too.

What a weekend!

| December 14, 2010

Well, aside from the Christmas tree decorating and the Rose Tree Park visit, we have had quite a weekend.  Sam had a stomach bug that wasn’t a lot of fun, and she gave it to me, which was less fun. 🙁  But she is feeling a lot better now, as am I.  We are both on the mend and hoping that Mark can ward off any germs!

In other more upbeat news, Sam has been doing some really cute things lately.  Where to begin?  Well, first, she is learning to do some adorable things.  My mom bought her a drum for Christmas which she sort of uses, and sort of not.  Lately though she has been trying it out more and more and is actually getting good at it.  She usually only uses one drumstick.  A few days ago, she starting drumming with both drumsticks at the same time and Mark and I cheered and clapped for her.  She started clapping for herself!  She did it really well too, actually making a little bit of a clapping noise.  The funniest thing about it is that I think she believes that clapping is part of playing the drum.  Each time she drums now, she stops mid-drumming and starts clapping, then drums again, then claps.  Once I was drumming her drum and she was facing away from me, and she started clapping then too.  It is so cute.  I sing to her every night when I am in her room giving her a bottle and last night while I was singing she starting clapping for me like she was saying, “Good job Mommy!”

Another cute thing is that she mimics really well now.  I was getting her out of her highchair last week and while I was lifting her, she pulled my hair. I yelled “Ow!” really loudly because it hurt like heck and almost immediately she started saying, “Owwww!” in what Mark told me was a pretty good imitation.  She’s been practicing too….sometimes she is just sitting on the floor playing and you hear her saying, “Ow, Ow, Ow”, like she is trying it out.   I haven’t mentioned that Joe, Sam’s Poppy, got his carpal tunnel surgery last week and has some pretty nasty stitches in his right hand and wrist.  Today my mom told me Sam looked at his hand, pointed, and said, “Owwww!”  She knows an owie now, that’s for sure.

Sam also popped another tooth that I had no idea was coming — a bottom molar on her right side.  This kid is getting a lot of teeth.

Well, that’s it for now.  More news coming soon — Sam is always doing something interesting!

Christmas Tree Time!

| December 14, 2010

This weekend we had fun picking out and decorating our Christmas tree.  Last year we brought Sam, of course, but she was so little I actually think she was asleep through the whole process.  This year, she was much more aware of what was going on.  She was a little like a deer in headlights — I don’t think she knew quite where we had taken her.  But eventually she got the idea and she enjoyed helping to pick out the tree. There was only one tree she started babbling about, so that is the one that came home.  It’s a good thing it was a pretty one.  Here are some pictures.

Sam was giving the tree a good look to make sure it was lush, straight, and had fresh needles!

The next day, after we let the tree settle a bit, we decorated — the best part!  Sam was adorable.  She got SO excited when I opened the box of ornaments.  She had no idea what was in there, but as soon as she could get her hands in, she started pulling everything out! I had a hard time keeping up with her.  She was throwing things on the floor so fast, and it was all I could do to keep up with her little hands to make sure she didn’t throw anything breakable.

So far, she has been pretty good with the tree.  No yanking off of ornaments, but to be safe, only non-breakable ones are within her reach.  We have had a lot of practice over the years with the cats so we know how to decorate a tree to keep everything safe!

Mark and I start our Christmas vacation after this week is done and we are so excited to have 2 whole weeks off with Sam.  We’ll be posting pics of the decorated tree (and us!) very soon!

Christmas lights at Rose Tree Park

| December 11, 2010

There is a local park that has a nice Christmas display and we decided to take Sam tonight because it was relatively warm (only in the mid 30’s!). She loves looking at any kind of lights but of course, especially likes Christmas lights. She was cold but braved the weather like a little trooper. Here is what one of the main paths looks like:

We found a nice little teddy bear that she wanted to check out:

But then she found a snowman! Long time blog readers will remember from last year that Sam loves snowmen. We have a bunch around that house that light up and she plays with them every day. This one was bigger than her!

We all had a very nice time looking at all the lights! Pam and I already said we can’t wait to bring her back next year, this time with a thermos full of warm hot chocolate 🙂
