Watching the snowfall

| December 26, 2010

Well, it wasn’t quite a White Christmas this year but almost. The East coast is getting hammered with the first big snowfall of this winter season. Sam saw lots of snow last year but was too young really to enjoy it. This time will be different! She got a new sled and new snow boots for Christmas and can’t wait to try them out. There wasn’t quite enough snow for sledding this afternoon but should be tomorrow for sure, can’t wait. Here is our little snow bunny getting her first look at the falling snow.

Christmas Day 2010

| December 26, 2010

This Christmas was the best one I think I ever had.  We thought last Christmas was the best — and it was very special because we had Samantha — but this year was truly amazing.  It was exactly the way Christmas was supposed to be — a little munchkin tearing through toys at the speed of light, full of excitement and wonder and out-and-out joy.  This year, even though Sam didn’t understand Santa, she definitely was thrilled by the whole concept of Christmas.  Here she is just completely befuddled by the sheer volume of toys under the tree.

One of the things Mark really wanted to get her were some musical instruments.  He is musical, Mark plays the saxophone, and we both would really like Sam to enjoy music the way he does.  We bought her a keyboard (a Meowsic!) and a saxophone.  Mark found the sax in Germany on his last trip, and carried it back 4,000 miles in his carry-on bag to that it would arrive home to Sam safely.  That is devotion!

I go to Borders a lot, and each time Sam sees this dress up kitty.  She just lights up when she sees it so we bought it for her.  It will hopefully help her to master the fine art of buttons, zippers, and other clothes fastening mechanisms.  I loved my Dressy Bessy, but I would have liked a cat!  It’s so funny, but all stuffed animals get their noses bitten by Sam.  We have no idea why but it is apparently a right of passage. You get your nose bitten, you are in. 🙂

After opening gifts at home, we went to see my parents.  My mom’s favorite Christmas carol is “Santa Baby” by Eartha Kitt, and this year at Macy’s we found this funny little animated cat that sings it.  Sam loves it!  She points to it when she wants it turned on. You can just see it in her face how much she likes this silly little cat. There are so many things she loves about Christmas, the decorations, the lights, she is going to be really sad when it is all packed away.

Joe was outside messing around doing who knows what, and Sam patiently waited at the door for him to come in so she could start opening her presents.

Eventually, the gift opening started.  Sam’s special gift this year was a Fisher Price house that my mom found.  She knows how much I loved mine when I was a kid, and since things are just not made the same today, she has been searching ebay for a retro one to give Sam.  She found a house and a bunch of the accessories for Sam.  I loved it for the memories it brought back, and I was happy to see that Sam loved it too.  She couldn’t wait to dive in!  She kept pulling pieces out left and right.

One of Sam’s other presents was a little drum to keep at my mom’s house since she has no instruments there.  Daddy was helping her to figure it out.

After staying with my parents for a while, we went to see Mark’s family.  One of the gifts we were glad Sam got was a pair of snow boots!

Sam’s cousin Analiece helped her to check out her new vacuum cleaner.

Here’s all the ladies!

Maddox got some pretty cool gifts too — a lot of cars and trucks.  Sam helped him play with them later.

One of Sam’s favorite presents was her crocodile.  She was so funny, she kept throwing the little blocks that came with it all over the place.  I never saw her so animated with her toys as she was this Christmas.  She was so excited by every little thing.

Here is a really nice picture of Mark’s parents enjoying the whirlwind of children and grandchildren….

We had dinner with my parents later that night, but were glad to finally get home to put Sam to bed and to spend some time with Zephyr.  She got a catnip sock for Christmas and was so excited to play with it!  She was like a kitten again.

This Christmas is certainly one I will always remember.  Next year I am sure that Sam will understand the concept of Santa and I can’t wait to see her excitement.  It is hard to believe it will top this year.  She was so thrilled today, it was like Christmas morning all over again. She kept looking at me while surrounded by her toys like she was asking me, “Mommy?  These are really all mine?”  It was so much fun.  I almost forgot to open my own gifts this year because it was more fun watching Sam with hers.  I didn’t want to spoil her by buying a million things, but every penny we spent was worth it.  Santa may bring gifts, and her family may spoil her too, but I will always want to give my beautiful daughter everything.  She is certainly worth the world to me.

Christmas Eve

| December 26, 2010

This year we spent Christmas Eve trying to do some fun things with Sam.  The whole week was so crazy,  baking cookies, wrapping presents, trying to get everything ready f0r Santa to arrive, that the time just slipped away. Mark and I had off from work  the whole week and it flew by like it was one day.

We got as much done as we possibly could so that on Christmas Eve we could relax and have some fun.  Our only order of business was to build Sam’s gingerbread house.  What an adventure that was!  This was really the first time I ever built one.  For some reason, even though my childhood Christmases were filled with traditional events, we never did the gingerbread house.  So I wasn’t exactly an expert builder.  It turned out ok in the end, but it was quite an uphill battle!  I don’t think we waited long enough after assembly to start decorating because the roof almost slid off at least twice.  We had it held up by load-bearing toothpicks and then when they kept collapsing, straws.  So funny. Sam didn’t seem to mind at all.  She had fun watching us make a huge mess and then tried to grab it and disassemble our masterpiece within minutes.  All in all, I think it turned out pretty well!  I bought gingerbread house molds last year so that someday I can make one from scratch, but with the way it went this year, I am glad we at least had a pre-baked one!

Later that night while waiting for all of our parents to arrive, we took some pictures.  Our little Zephyr cat was a super snuggly kitten. 🙂

Mark parents arrived first and Sam posed for a photo.  She was so excited, I really think she knew something was going on, even though she didn’t understand Santa.

She was getting tired, that’s for sure, but she was in such a good mood!  Sam was all smiles the whole night and all of her grandparents had a great time hanging out with her.  She was really so giggly, it was adorable.

DSC_6059

As per our tradition, Mark read Twas the Night Before Christmas.  He only got a few pages in before Sam was wiggling away.  She is really hard to read to now.  She used to sit still for a whole book, but now that she is older she just has too much to do to read a book!  It has been a while since we have been able to read her more than a few pages of any book.  We are really looking forward to being able to cuddle with her and to read again.  But, since we want to maintain the tradition, he read what he could.

After Sam was in bed, we brought all her presents up to put them under the tree.  That is, the ones that we bought her.  Who knew what Santa was going to bring!

Then it was off to bed!  Santa is on the way and everyone needed to get to sleep!
