On thing we’ve learned about toddlers. . .

| January 9, 2011

. . .they are never happy where they currently are or with what they are currently playing with. Now that she is so mobile, Sam just goes from one toy to the next like crazy, never playing with any one thing for more than a minute or two. She also doesn’t stay in one spot for more than a minute or so. If there is anything in sight, she needs to touch it and rub her sticky little fingers all over it.

Like most kids, she is enamored with the remote control. Of course Verizon had to go and put giant buttons that light up with different colors all over it, they might as well made it play Für Elise as well. Here are a couple of cute shots I took the other day, she was sitting on the couch for all of 15 seconds before she saw the remote on the end table and made a break for it.

Is that the remote control with the cool light-up buttons?

It is, I bet I could get that!

Almost there!

Just some cute portraits

Sam had just woken up from a nap yesterday and was crawling all around when I snapped these photos. Her hair is getting so long now and gets all rumply when she naps, just like her Dad’s. 🙂

Later on we tried to tame her wild mane with a barrette. She didn’t seem to mind actually and it looked really cute.

Mealtime with Sam

| January 3, 2011

Sam is getting to be such a good little eater.  After months of thinking this kid was never going to accept table food as anything other than poison, she eats so well now.  It is so cute to sit with her at the table while she is in the high chair and watch her shovel her food in.  Mark and I say that often, that we love just watching her eat.  That is something that only a parent could say, I swear.  How boring, right?  But honestly, it is just so cute to us.  She is sort of dainty while she eats, she never truly gets that messy, her face only needs a quick swipe and her hands are fairly clean.  In so many ways, she is so girly, the way she eats, the way she plays.  I hate getting messy with food personally, so maybe she eats that way from watching me.

Anyway, one of the funniest things she always does is after she eats when I go to clean her up.  She absolutely hates having her face cleaned.  She sees me coming with the rag or wipe and can’t do enough to get away from me.  When you are wiping her face she shakes her head back and forth really fast like she is trying to get away, but it actually helps with the wiping, so it’s ok.  Mark took some pictures of her at lunchtime yesterday that are very typical Sam.

Here she is enjoying her chicken and broccoli.

Uh, oh.  Here comes Mommy.  I see that wipe!

Noooooo!!!!  Get away from me!

Is she gone yet?

No, oh no, she’s still here!

Whew, I think she’s gone!

Ha ha ha…I foiled your attempts to clean me.  Score one for the baby!

Sleepy now…avoiding wipes is a lot of work.  (That is also the face that Sam makes when she is tired.  It’s a sure sign that naptime should be imminent….)

Shoes

Pam made the comment that I often don’t write a lot when I post. She is right to some extent but I have several reasons for this.

First of all, I pride myself on being able to express myself succinctly and efficiently. I believe this has been one of the contributing factors for my success at work and at grad school. I was a professional technical editor for years and worked hard to develop the good writing skills that were first instilled in me by my Mom when I was in high school.

Second, I really enjoy having this blog as an artistic outlet for my photography. Of course, not all the photographs here are what I would consider art. Often times they are simple snapshots, although ones of a rather special subject matter. But, when I can find the time, I like to take and post photographs that have deeper meanings, at least to me and Pam. I like photographs that have some mystery to them. I am drawn to images that provoke questions and make suggestions that are open to interpretation by the viewer.

I have always found writing to be pretty easy and more or less straightforward. However, with photography, I can explore ideas and concepts that are more open ended and ambiguous and I find this pursuit very compelling. To be able to express some deep thought with only one image rather than lots of written text is a challenge I am really enjoying. Sure, the subject matter I explore here is all about the mutual love of one young family but it is my family. It is one that I was starting to think I would never have and now that I do, I want to explore and enjoy every aspect of it. I also what to document it in a way that is meaningful and challenging so that when she is older, our wonderful little girl can learn about how much we truly love her.

So here is my photograph for tonight, just one simple image. It is something both Pam and I have had in mind for awhile and finally found time to shoot yesterday.

Happy New Year!

| January 1, 2011

On this New Year’s Day, 2011, I wanted to say thank you to my incredible husband for everything he does for our family every single day.  I couldn’t make it without you.  And a very Happy New Year to our amazing daughter.  I want nothing but the best for you and a lifetime of happiness, joy, excitement, adventure, peace, fun, and love.  You make every New Year something to celebrate.  I love you both so very much.
