Happy 18 month birthday!

| March 23, 2011

I can’t believe my little girl is 18 months old today.  Samantha, you are such a big girl now.  I was watching you play at your grandparents’ house today and you seemed so very grown up.  You were playing with toys in ways you never did before and doing things that only a few months ago you were not capable of doing.  You can so easily master things now, figuring out how they work and what makes things happen.  You understand words and directions in ways that boggle my mind seeing as you don’t really know how to talk.  You looked so pretty today in your little overalls I just wanted to eat you up!  Thank you for your smiles, your hugs, all the fun, and your quiet little giggles you give me now at night while we snuggle before you go into your crib.  I love you so much.  I will always love you no matter what.  You are an incredible person and I can’t wait to celebrate all your little half-year birthdays with you as you grow up.  Sleep tight, my little pumpkinhead.  I can’t wait to see you tomorrow.

Toot!

Sam figured out how to blow a whistle today!  I was so shocked.  I bought her this cheap bird shaped whistle at CVS recently thinking that Mark or I could use it and show her. Supposedly, when you add different amounts of water to the whistle, it makes different bird sounds. Well, we tried it and it didn’t seem to do anything but leak, but truthfully we didn’t try very hard.  Anyway, we have been using it without water and it just sounds like a plain old whistle, not a bird, but Sam likes it.  She has started trying to put it into Mark’s mouth when she wants to hear it.  Today, she found it on the end table and put it into her own mouth and before she knew it, out came a whistle!  She looked so surprised.  I don’t think she actually figured out that she has to blow, but rather, it just sort of whistled while she was breathing out, but she eventually figured out that air makes it work because she kept doing it.  I took her to the stairs to show Mark who was in the basement working, and he said he heard all the whistling but thought it was me!  Sam made a whistle for him and she looked very pleased with her accomplishment.  We were very proud of our little girl today. She is quite grown up. 🙂

And it wasn’t even a Crayola

| March 21, 2011

Sam ate her first crayon yesterday.  A piece of one anyway.  A red one.  At Chili’s.  She was not loving it, not that she won’t do it again, mind you.  I knew it was coming since Sam’s only interest in crayons seems to be (a) eating them, (b) taking them out of the box and throwing them in the air, or (c) breaking them.  Actual *coloring* seems to be out of the question.  I can only hope this is not a frequent occurrence but with our adventurous little girl, I am not counting on it!

In other news, her cold seems to be just about gone. She has the last little bit of a cough and a little bit of a runny nose, but she is pretty much back to her normal self.  Less tantrums, more smiles and giggles, more playtime.  I on the other hand still have a bad cold, and now Mark and my mom are starting to feel a bit sick.  Well, what can you do?  When wiping runny noses a million times a day and having her cough all over you, it is to be expected.  I am just glad she is feeling better since we can all deal with illness better than she can.

We turned Sam’s carseat around yesterday in my car so that she is riding facing forward.  She had to be a year old and 20 lbs before she could legally do so, and even though she has been old enough for a long time, it took her forever to reach the correct weight!  She will be 18 months old on Tuesday and she is really only maybe about 22 lbs I think.  When we took her out for the first time yesterday, Sam looked like a deer in headlights riding around.  I don’t think she quite knew what to make of all the images whizzing past the window.  But as Mark commented, what does she know?  For all she knew we got in the car and sat for a while and we wound up somewhere else.  By the time we were on our way home from shopping and dinner, she looked right at home.  She was enjoying the view, laughing and playing, and having a great time each time Mommy turned around to peek at her.  She also got a kick out of the sunroof.

It is really nice being able to see her clearly now when I stop at red lights.  And it is easier getting her in and out of the car in general.  We are going to switch Mark’s car and my mom’s around too as soon as we can. I think we will have to — Sam isn’t going to want to ride backwards anymore after being able to see what is going on in my car!

Home playing nursemaid

| March 16, 2011

Today I stayed home from work to take care of Samantha.  I actully think this is the first time I have ever had to do that, she is usually so darn healthy. But, she had such a bad day yesterday, coughing and sneezing with her nose running.  She hardly ate and wouldn’t even drink that much.  My mom took her to the doctor for me yesterday and Mark met them there. Thankfully, her chest sounded clear and her ears were fine.  The doc thinks it will be another 3 days or so before her cold goes away, but she checked out as fine as she could be under the circumstances.  It was raining this morning and Sam didn’t sleep all that well last night because she was coughing again, so I decided a day at home with mommy was just what the doctor ordered.  I have spent the entire day just hugging and cuddling her.  All she wants is to be held.  She even took a short nap on me this morning which was shocking since she gave up the morning nap a while ago.  She is napping now, and I am hoping it will be a long one.  She is so tired and sleep is really the best thing for her.  She is coughing less than she was this morning and her nose, although still running like mad, has slowed down a bit, so I am hopeful that she is on an upswing.  Wish us luck!

Poor sick Sam

| March 14, 2011

Poor little Samantha has been through quite a bit lately, health-wise.  First, about a week ago, she developed a bad diaper rash.  She has never had diaper rash so it was quite unusual.  I treated it with regular cream for about 3 or 4 days, but it wasn’t getting any better, so I called her pediatrician.  I was lucky enough to actually speak to a doctor and he said it sounded like a yeast diaper rash and told me to use Lotrimin cream 3 times a day.  Sounded good to me!  So off Sam and I went to the pharmacy to buy her cream.  The rash never looked that bad, not at all like the Internet photos I saw, but I had no idea why it was not responding to diaper rash cream, so I figured yeast it must be!  The worst part was that in addition to being red and bumpy, it was itchy, which made Sam crazy.  The poor little girl was always scratching her butt!  The doc said it should start to get better in about 3 days so I was really glad about that.

So, I treated it for 4 days.  Well, the 5th day it looked worse than ever and had spread!  I called and spoke to a doctor again and got her an appointment for that day.  The doc we saw that day (one of my faves) said it did not look like yeast to him, but rather was probably bacterial so he prescribed yet another type of cream.  Off Sam and I went to the pharmacy again!  This time, however, it did the trick!  One day of treatment and the next day the rash was completely gone!  I was so happy about that.  But, here comes the ominous music — DUM DUM DUM — Sam now has a cold.

She woke up on Saturday just miserable!  The night before she was cranky and irritable and wanted to go to bed really early so we let her.  She woke up coughing with a runny nose and fever.  She was coughing so hard she actually vomited a bit (all over my pajamas and hair – yay!).  I called the pediatrician AGAIN (this is more phone calls that I think I have ever made to her doctor in her entire life) to make sure it couldn’t be connected to her rash and be a bacterial infection that would need antibiotics.  The doctor I spoke to (I love this practice!), said most likely not, it was probably just a virus.  So, poor sick Sam has been hacking and coughing and sneezing and just so pooky.  On Saturday all she wanted to do was cuddle and be hugged all day, which I have to admit, Mark and I loved.  She is so squirmy all the time now that a cuddly Sam was a refreshing change.

But as you can see from the acorn photos I posted, she was her usual self pretty quickly.  Happy, and smiley.  She tries so hard to be happy all the time even when she is sick.  She is bouncing (she recently discovered she can bounce on her crib mattress) and playing and smiling and being her joyful self.  Hopefully, she will feel 100% better soon.  It is so hard not being able to do much for her cold.  Get better soon, Sam!
