Poor sick Sam

| March 14, 2011

Poor little Samantha has been through quite a bit lately, health-wise.  First, about a week ago, she developed a bad diaper rash.  She has never had diaper rash so it was quite unusual.  I treated it with regular cream for about 3 or 4 days, but it wasn’t getting any better, so I called her pediatrician.  I was lucky enough to actually speak to a doctor and he said it sounded like a yeast diaper rash and told me to use Lotrimin cream 3 times a day.  Sounded good to me!  So off Sam and I went to the pharmacy to buy her cream.  The rash never looked that bad, not at all like the Internet photos I saw, but I had no idea why it was not responding to diaper rash cream, so I figured yeast it must be!  The worst part was that in addition to being red and bumpy, it was itchy, which made Sam crazy.  The poor little girl was always scratching her butt!  The doc said it should start to get better in about 3 days so I was really glad about that.

So, I treated it for 4 days.  Well, the 5th day it looked worse than ever and had spread!  I called and spoke to a doctor again and got her an appointment for that day.  The doc we saw that day (one of my faves) said it did not look like yeast to him, but rather was probably bacterial so he prescribed yet another type of cream.  Off Sam and I went to the pharmacy again!  This time, however, it did the trick!  One day of treatment and the next day the rash was completely gone!  I was so happy about that.  But, here comes the ominous music — DUM DUM DUM — Sam now has a cold.

She woke up on Saturday just miserable!  The night before she was cranky and irritable and wanted to go to bed really early so we let her.  She woke up coughing with a runny nose and fever.  She was coughing so hard she actually vomited a bit (all over my pajamas and hair – yay!).  I called the pediatrician AGAIN (this is more phone calls that I think I have ever made to her doctor in her entire life) to make sure it couldn’t be connected to her rash and be a bacterial infection that would need antibiotics.  The doctor I spoke to (I love this practice!), said most likely not, it was probably just a virus.  So, poor sick Sam has been hacking and coughing and sneezing and just so pooky.  On Saturday all she wanted to do was cuddle and be hugged all day, which I have to admit, Mark and I loved.  She is so squirmy all the time now that a cuddly Sam was a refreshing change.

But as you can see from the acorn photos I posted, she was her usual self pretty quickly.  Happy, and smiley.  She tries so hard to be happy all the time even when she is sick.  She is bouncing (she recently discovered she can bounce on her crib mattress) and playing and smiling and being her joyful self.  Hopefully, she will feel 100% better soon.  It is so hard not being able to do much for her cold.  Get better soon, Sam!

Communing with nature

Mark and I are always trying to spend time outside, but I swear, it is getting increasingly more difficult.  It seems like the winters are getting longer and longer, and the days that are not cold are either ridiculously windy or rainy, or both.   This past weekend was a bit windy but we decided to venture outside anyway to get some fresh air.  Sam wasn’t feeling well (more on that in a later post….) so we figured it would do her some good.

It is really cute taking her outside now.  Not only is she walking all around, which is more fun than having to carry her all over, but she is starting to explore like crazy.  One of her favorite pasttimes has become scouring the lawn for acorns.  Why, we have no idea, but acorns are truly exciting to Sam.   The lawn behind ours has a huge oak tree that drops about a million acorns in our yard every year, which is a huge pain for us when doing lawn clean-up, but the squirrels love them (and we love the squirrels) and now Sam loves them.

Here we are examing some new ones.  I try to help her to find the non-broken ones sometimes.

Our pretty little girl gazing at her treasures.

She started out collecting as many acorns as she could in her little hands, but soon she couldn’t carry any more.  I found her a bucket of sorts (really a sand mold) for her to put them in.  She now proudly carries it around full of her acorns.  It is cute watching her examine each one she picks up or we hand to her, then either put it back on the ground, or in the bucket.  She is very discriminating about what is deemed worthy!

I pulled out a bunch of her other sand toys just to give her something to do.  We really need to get her some lawn toys for the summer!  Look at that smile!

Here are Sam’s precious acorns.  She has been very busy!

One last photo — Sam paused long enough to take a picture with her devoted daddy.

Snacks and Legos

| March 14, 2011

Ahhh…the life of a toddler.  Here are a few pictures of Sam that Mark took recently.  She was sitting enjoying her veggie sticks amongst her Duplo Lego bricks.  She loves those things (the sticks AND the Legos).  I love the mischievous smile.  Sam got her first set of Legos on Christmas from her Aunt Krista and Uncle Adam, and her favorite part, by far, is the little farm animals that came with them.  She carries them all (especially the cat!) all over the house.  So, of course, we had to buy her some more.  We meant to buy her only some extra animals, but wound up buying her a bunch more bricks too.  Right now, Sam has more fun dismantling everything Mark and I build her than building on her own, but she has fun nonetheless.
