Memorial Day Weekend

| May 31, 2011

We didn’t really take too many pictures this weekend, sadly, but it was so unbelievably hot that we spent very little time outdoors.  We did hit the pool, however!  We knew Sam wouldn’t remember the pool from last year since she was so small but we hoped that she would like it.  She loves water – her tub, the hose, her watering can – so we figured the pool would be fun for her.  As we expected, she was a little apprehensive at first but she quickly got the hang of it.  It was so different this year watching her walk around in the baby pool just as easy as can be.  Last year, she couldn’t really do much other than float around in her boat and be held by us.  This year, she was filling her bucket and her watering can and trying to grab every other kid’s toys (but not her own, of course).  She really did have a good time and so did we.  She looked so cute in her little bathing suit.  I will post some pictures as soon as I can.

In other news, she is talking more and more.  She likes to imitate mommy and grandmom saying, “no no no no no” (the multiple no’s is usually what she hears as we are grabbing something from her). It is so funny to hear. She also has discovered she can say “yes” which is much nicer to hear!  I have been trying to get her to communicate with me more and have discovered that by offering her a specific response, rather than waiting for her to find the right word, works better.  For example, a few weeks ago she was crying “more!” over and over again as I was taking her from her stroller into the car.  I asked her, “more what, Sam, more water, more stickers, more apples?” (all of the things in her stroller) and she clearly said, “apple”.  And this weekend she was frantic in my arms while I was trying to determine what she wanted for breakfast so I asked her whether she wanted cheerios or banana.  She still wouldn’t answer me so I said, “Sam, if you want a banana, say yes” and she said “yes” clear as a bell.  So, she is getting there.  Sam likes to repeat words you say to her as if she is trying them out.  She likes her animal words best like bird, cat, etc.  She never says dog though, just woof woof woof!  She has started saying, “bye bye” and she always says “night night”.    One of her cuter words is “Melmo” which is what she calls Elmo. 🙂

Sam is also becoming a kissy girl.  She only kisses you when she wants to though, if you ask for a kiss she will never give you one.  Last night, I was carrying her up the stairs for bed and she was grabbing the side of my face so strongly. I couldn’t figure out what she was doing because sometimes she wants to see my ponytail.  Well, eventually I just gave in and let her tug and she pulled my face in for a smooch.  That is usually how you get kisses — you get dragged over to her face.  It is so cute.

I miss my little girl today!

My Little Chatterbox

| May 26, 2011

Sam has been really starting to talk a lot more which is pretty exciting.  She uses more and more words all the time.  Some of them she only says once or twice, repeating what we say, sort of like she is trying it on for size.  But every new word is a big milestone.  Even with all that talking, there is still a lot of pointing and yelling to get her message across.  Most of the time we can figure out what she wants but not always.  Mark and I keep saying that it will be nice when she is talking more and can actually tell us what she wants, or doesn’t want.  I am sure someday we will want to eat those words when she is a little chatterbox and is talking our ears off!

A couple of cute things — I have mentioned how much she loves her bush baby stuffed animal.  She still sleeps with him (and a million other stuffed animals) but he is one of her favorites.  (Grover is another, but bush baby is her special guy).  A lot of times when I am holding her at night in front of her crib trying to get her to relax enough to go into her crib for sleep, she leans over and tries to reach for one of her animals.  It is usually bush baby that she wants.  It took me a while to figure it out, but I finally realized a few days ago that when she is saying “boo boo” she is referring to her bush baby.  And today she said what I really think may be her first two word “sentence”.   She said, “good girl”.  My mom had called her that and she repeated it.

The thing that prompted the good girl is another story. Without going into too much detail, we have been starting to get some indications that Sam may be ready to at least experiment with potty training. She is definitely not there yet, but she is getting the idea, and starting to make the association with how she feels and the bathroom, which is a big first step. So, this weekend it looks like I will be buying a potty chair so she at least has one in the house.  She has starting telling us when she has to go, or when she just went, which is good.  I have always heard that potty training can be a nightmare, so here’s hoping that Sam is cooperative!

One of our last stops was the pond.  There are usually some turtles and I was trying to point one out to her that was sunning on a log.  There are some aerators in the middle of the pond and they sort of made bubbles.  Sam kept yelling, “Bub!  Bub!” the whole time.  (Bub is her shorthand for bubbles when she is too lazy to say the whole word).

Sam saw a turtle and she was really trying to show Maddox.  It’s cute how she’s pointing and Maddox is watching so intently.  There were quite a few turtles, and one frog, but I don’t think they saw the frog’s little head sticking up out of the water in the moss.

Maddox kept sticking his head through the slats in the fence and we all were afraid he was going to topple over and fall in.  I finally just grabbed a hold of his shirt to make sure he was secure on dry land!

Turtle watching….

Sam hanging out with her dad.  I love the little arm around him.

Mark and Krista taking a break on the bench.

There was a little house made of sticks that’s kind of hard to explain, but one side had this tube the kids could crawl through.  Sam wanted no part of it, but Maddox went through a million times!

In the fragrance garden.  Sam was checking out her dandelion collection more than the garden itself.  The last time she was there she really enjoyed all the scents she could experience, but I think she was getting tired.

Maddox wanted to know what she was looking at so he came right over.

One last picture, having a laugh with her mommy.

We had such a great time that day.  We can’t wait to go back again soon.  At dinner that night, Sam was sitting next to Mark in the restaurant, and she spontaneously leaned over and hugged him and gave him a kiss.  He said it was the first unprompted kiss she ever gave him and he will never forget it. I think she was saying thank you for giving her such a wonderful day.  We had an amazing day too Sam!

Everywhere Sam goes she finds dandelions. It’s like she has radar for them.  She picked a few while she was there and carried them around the whole time.  It is funny how many pictures Mark took where you can see a dandelion in her hand.

Our beautiful girl.

This is such typical Samantha.  Very pensive, very quiet, very sweet.

In one of the treehouses, the theme was music.  There were wind chimes and some other xylophone type things for them to play with.

After the treehouses were done, we just walked around a little bit.  We found something new since the last time we visited — frogs!  Huge, huge frogs!

Sam was pretty fond of this one apparently.

Maddox just ran and ran and ran the entire time.  That kid has a lot of energy!

We walked across the troll bridge, but sadly, we didn’t hear any trolls.  Usually, when you walk across, the troll yells at you for crossing without permission.  He must have been sleeping. 😉 The kids liked it anyway.

Sam and her Aunt Krista.  Of course, you know Sam had to go right for the necklace!

These next few are some of our favorite pictures.  Sam and Maddox look so adorable together.  In the first one, I think the expression on Sam’s face is so sweet.  She looks so happy to be sitting with her cousin.

Hugs!

Here is the happy Burke family!

And the equally happy Myers family!  Without Zephyr, of course, but I don’t think she’d like, or be allowed, in the park.
