Sam has known how to go up steps for quite a long time. Down, however, well, that’s another story. She never really goes down steps. Our little girl is more than happy to be carried, thank you very much. I decided it is more than time for her to be comfortable going down as well as up. At my mom’s house, we have tried showing her how on the steps by the front door, and she does ok, but she always looks a bit terrified. Today, Sam was pushing around her baby doll stroller (pictures of that to come, for sure, it is adorable watching her push her doll–my old doll) and I thought it was a perfect time to take 5 minutes to take a broom to my stairs. So, off I went up the steps. I got about 4 steps down when I heard a little giggle. Here comes Sam!
I told her mommy was sweeping and she needed to go back down. She surprised me by actually going down the steps! She went down backwards, holding on to the step above her, and reaching her little feet down below. She made it to the bottom, I of course, made a huge fuss, and finished sweeping. Sam then promptly went up about 4 steps and descended again. She did this a few times. Some of the time, she went down backwards, some of the time, on her butt, and some of the time, a mixture of both. I think she is trying to figure out which way she is more comfortable. Frankly, I don’t care which she chooses as long as she is comfortable doing it, and therefore, safe. Pretty soon, there will be no stopping her!

Look at that adorable bed head! Sam had just woken up from her nap. The longer her hair gets, the more crazy it is when she gets up.

Sam has officially done it! She has kicked the bottle habit. It’s been more than a week and there is no looking back. She really hasn’t seemed to miss it at all. In fact, sometimes now she doesn’t even want her sippy cup of milk at naptime or bedtime, she is content to just get cuddled and sang to and then into her crib. She doesn’t seem to need that crutch anymore. I am sure the pediatrician and all the child experts would say this means that her continued use of the bottle all this time was more my fault than hers if she could give it up so easily, but I really don’t think so. We tried so many times before and it was a disaster. I think Sam was just ready this time. It took me a long time to learn that with anything in Sam’s development, she will do it in her own time, when she is ready. I thought she would never eat baby food, and of course, she did. I thought she’d never eat table food, and of course, she did. I thought she would never walk, and of course, she did. And all of those things were done in the perfectly acceptable range of time for her development. I don’t know why parents want to rush along every milestone like we all seem to do. I guess it is because every new thing is so exciting, and seeing your child grow up and do more and more is reassuring – it tells you that your child is “normal” (whatever that means). But then those milestones are passed, and we all think it went by so fast and then we are sad because we can’t get that time back again. I do miss so many things about when Sam was a baby, but not for long. Because all I have to do is look at her now, when she says or does something exceedingly cute, or see her smile at me with her adorable grin, and I am so glad I have my big girl. Someone I can share a laugh with, play games with, and just enjoy being with. I wouldn’t trade that for anything.

I have been thinking about some random Sam facts that I wanted to share. There are also some cute pictures that we never seemed to get around to posting, so here they are!
Here is Sam on Memorial Day weekend enjoying the pool. I can’t believe I never posted this before. I am slacking!
I mentioned in a previous post that Sam likes candy now and had fun eating Pez. Here are some cute pictures of Sam and Mark together. Look at her happy little face stuffed full of sugar!
Someone loves sitting with her daddy. 🙂
Sam is really good at sharing, and she nicely gave her daddy one of her Pez candies.
Here are some of the big girl things that Sam can do now:
- Walk backwards
- Spin around in circles (she will usually topple over afterwards from being dizzy)
- Go down steps if you hold her hand (this is fairly new and she won’t always do it)
- Climb onto our kitchen chairs (I am sure the table is not far behind)
She is getting a lot better at eating too. We have been trying to get her to eat a bigger variety of foods. Last night she ate 2 whole Chik-fil-a chicken nuggets, a few french fries, some cheese and some grapes. Not a bad dinner! We were really happy about the chicken. She never eats much meat and we want that to change. She was really into cheese for a long time then suddenly got turned off of it which was disheartening since it is such a good snack. Lately though, Sam has rediscovered her love of cheese, thank goodness.
Our little girl amazes us more and more every day. We are so lucky to have her!

We all went to Maddox’s 2nd birthday party on Father’s Day weekend. Krista and Adam had it at Linvilla Orchards, which is a great place to have a kid’s party. With all the animals around for them to see and the playground and all the other stuff to amuse them, it was really fun.
We all went on a pseudo hayride (no hay, just a people mover because some of the party goers have major allergies!). They took us all through the entire orchard which was really cool. I had no idea the place was so big. It was naptime for Sam at the time, so she was in a bit of a daze for the entire ride, but I think she had fun anyway.
Near the end, Maddox got a birthday surprise – a freshly grown and picked Linvilla apple. As you can see, he enjoyed it thoroughly!
After the ride, the kids played in the playground. Sam spent quite a lot of time in the caboose of the train.
Maddox joined Sam and she was happy about that! She loves watching her cousin.
After the train, Sam moved on to driving. Look out, here she comes!
Pizza and cake! The cake was decorated like a farm, which was the perfect theme for the day. Sam’s favorite part of parties is when people sing happy birthday.
Sam was really tired after a while and a snuggle with her Pop Pop was just what she needed. Look at that tired little face!
