Just wait until she learns how to use speed dial…

| June 15, 2011

Every morning now for a few weeks, I have been getting a call from my mom while I am at work very early in the morning.  Now, you may think that I would be panicked by these calls, as in, oh no! what is wrong!  why is my mom calling so early!?  But no, I know Sam is in good hands and Sam is fine.  Rather, what is happening is that Sam, every day, hands my mom the phone and says, “Mom!” because she wants my mom to call me.  So, my mom calls and I talk on speaker phone to my little girl.  Today I had the thought that one day she will be old enough to actually dial or use the speed dial by herself and she will be calling me on her own.  I would love that, actually.  Hearing her little voice on the phone while I am at my desk really brightens my day.

My mom told me that this morning Sam said, “Mom?” and my mom replied, “Mommy is at work”, then Sam said, “Dad?” and my mom replied, “Daddy is at work” and Sam said, “Pop?” and my mom said, “Poppy is at work too, Sam.  It’s just you and me kid” and Sam cracked up laughing.  I think it’s so funny that she had to check and see where all her people were.

She is such a little sweetheart. She is getting so big now.  Even watching her play with her toys is fun.  She plays so differently than she used to, she is much more innovative than she was before.  She finds different ways to use things, and manipulates her toys so much more easily. Mark just bought her a Tonka dump truck and the first day she wouldn’t even touch it, but today, she was loading all her Lego bricks into the truck and pushing it all over the family room.  She has been riding her giraffe now which she would never do before and she moves her stuffed animals around in very people-like motions, making them hug and kiss and jump.  On Monday, I went to get her from her crib in the morning and she was tapping two of her animals faces together and making kissing noises.  How cute is that?

This weekend is Father’s Day and I am hoping to get some great pictures of Mark and Sam together.  We’ll see what we get!

Bottle free? I think we are home free!

| June 15, 2011

I am so sick of using bottles for Sam!  The bottles I have are fine, they are the ones she has had since infancy (Avent, they are awesome), but seriously, she is almost 21 months old and I am over it. Besides the fact that I haven’t bought her any new nipples since she was maybe 9 months old and they are getting old and leaking and I just refuse to buy new ones.  So, this weekend, Mark and I decided to try yet again to get her to stop using bottles and switch to sippy cups exclusively.

After her 12 month appointment, when our pediatrician ever so helpfully told us to cold turkey her and stop using them entirely (yeah, that was going to happen), we have tried a few times with no success.  We did quickly get her to the point where she only gets 2 bottles a day, one for her nap and one for bedtime and that was a big improvement.  But we couldn’t get her off the things.  Sam was addicted!  She would scream and cry and refuse to go to sleep without her bottle.  As you can imagine, we aborted our efforts and gave in and gave her a bottle.  But as I said, I am so over it.  We started giving her a sippy cup full of milk before sleep and she has done great!  No fits, no crying, just sleep.  She doesn’t drink as much milk out of her cup as she did her bottle, but that is ok.  We will just make sure to offer her milk during the day now instead of just water or juice (she doesn’t drink a lot of juice either, mostly water, which I am happy about).

Wish us luck!  So far so good – she is handling the change like a real trooper and I think the bottles are gone for good!

Mommy

| June 12, 2011

Today Sam melted my heart — she called me Mommy for the first time.  Not Mama, not Mom, but Mommy.  She had just made a total mess ripping everything out of one of our kitchen cabinets and I bent down and asked her to help me clean it up.  She didn’t budge so I just started cleaning it up myself and I mumbled, “so who is going to clean this up?  Obviously not Sam, I guess Mommy will do it” and I heard a tiny little “Mommy”.  I just melted and oohed and ahhed over her and asked Sam to give me a hug and she came right over and hugged me and just kept saying, Mom-my, Mom-my over and over again.  It was so adorable.  Not that I don’t love Mama and even her ever-so-grown up, Mom, but there is something about being Mommy that is just the best thing ever. 🙂

Sam and her bucket

| June 8, 2011

Sammy, have I told you lately how very cute you are?  How much I love you?  How funny and sweet you are?  Look at your little face, playing with your bucket full of whatever treasures you found while playing in our yard.  I love you sweetling and always will, no matter what.

Your daddy loves you too, little one, you can be sure of that! You are the apple of your daddy’s eye, and will always be his #1 girl.

The Sweet Tooth Has Finally Emerged!

| June 5, 2011

I knew it would have to happen sometime, it is in her genes.  For the longest time, Sam has not really shown any interest in sweets other than cookies.  Occasionally, a little bit of cake, but no chocolate, no candy, no popsicles, nothing like that.  Well, that’s all over now.  All of the sudden she decided that she has been missing out on a LOT of good stuff.  I posted recently that she ate a few M&Ms and liked them.  Last week, she saw a few Kinder Eggs (these super good hollow chocolate eggs that you can’t get in the U.S. because they have a small toy inside them) and she actually ate it!  And boy did she like it!  It was the most chocolate I think she ever ate.  One night this past week, Mark was putting her pajamas on while we were all sitting on the couch and she spied my fudgesicle.  I really didn’t think she’d like it because she never ate popsicles before, but she took a lick, smacked her lips a little bit like she was thinking about it, then opened up her mouth again so I could give her more.  She had quite a bit!  Then, last night, Mark was eating Pez candy and she ate a bunch of those.  Today at Rich and Sandi’s house, she ate Smarties.  Oh, Sam…you have finally learned what Mommy, Daddy, your Great-Grandmom Thanner, and your Aunt Krista have always known….candy is king!
