Just wait until she learns how to use speed dial…

Every morning now for a few weeks, I have been getting a call from my mom while I am at work very early in the morning.  Now, you may think that I would be panicked by these calls, as in, oh no! what is wrong!  why is my mom calling so early!?  But no, I know Sam is in good hands and Sam is fine.  Rather, what is happening is that Sam, every day, hands my mom the phone and says, “Mom!” because she wants my mom to call me.  So, my mom calls and I talk on speaker phone to my little girl.  Today I had the thought that one day she will be old enough to actually dial or use the speed dial by herself and she will be calling me on her own.  I would love that, actually.  Hearing her little voice on the phone while I am at my desk really brightens my day.

My mom told me that this morning Sam said, “Mom?” and my mom replied, “Mommy is at work”, then Sam said, “Dad?” and my mom replied, “Daddy is at work” and Sam said, “Pop?” and my mom said, “Poppy is at work too, Sam.  It’s just you and me kid” and Sam cracked up laughing.  I think it’s so funny that she had to check and see where all her people were.

She is such a little sweetheart. She is getting so big now.  Even watching her play with her toys is fun.  She plays so differently than she used to, she is much more innovative than she was before.  She finds different ways to use things, and manipulates her toys so much more easily. Mark just bought her a Tonka dump truck and the first day she wouldn’t even touch it, but today, she was loading all her Lego bricks into the truck and pushing it all over the family room.  She has been riding her giraffe now which she would never do before and she moves her stuffed animals around in very people-like motions, making them hug and kiss and jump.  On Monday, I went to get her from her crib in the morning and she was tapping two of her animals faces together and making kissing noises.  How cute is that?

This weekend is Father’s Day and I am hoping to get some great pictures of Mark and Sam together.  We’ll see what we get!

Bottle free? I think we are home free!

I am so sick of using bottles for Sam!  The bottles I have are fine, they are the ones she has had since infancy (Avent, they are awesome), but seriously, she is almost 21 months old and I am over it. Besides the fact that I haven’t bought her any new nipples since she was maybe 9 months old and they are getting old and leaking and I just refuse to buy new ones.  So, this weekend, Mark and I decided to try yet again to get her to stop using bottles and switch to sippy cups exclusively.

After her 12 month appointment, when our pediatrician ever so helpfully told us to cold turkey her and stop using them entirely (yeah, that was going to happen), we have tried a few times with no success.  We did quickly get her to the point where she only gets 2 bottles a day, one for her nap and one for bedtime and that was a big improvement.  But we couldn’t get her off the things.  Sam was addicted!  She would scream and cry and refuse to go to sleep without her bottle.  As you can imagine, we aborted our efforts and gave in and gave her a bottle.  But as I said, I am so over it.  We started giving her a sippy cup full of milk before sleep and she has done great!  No fits, no crying, just sleep.  She doesn’t drink as much milk out of her cup as she did her bottle, but that is ok.  We will just make sure to offer her milk during the day now instead of just water or juice (she doesn’t drink a lot of juice either, mostly water, which I am happy about).

Wish us luck!  So far so good – she is handling the change like a real trooper and I think the bottles are gone for good!
