I found my new assistant

| September 27, 2011

Sam has become such a good little helper.  Yesterday I was sorting clean laundry, trying to put clothes away and putting Sam’s clothes on my bed in categories (shirts, pants, pjs) so that I could put them away.  Sam insisted on grabbing some things despite my asking her a million times to please not throw her clean clothes on the floor and she took off with one of her pajama shirts.  I decided it really didn’t matter because if it let me get something done to just give her the shirt then she could have it.  I kind of forgot about it for the rest of the day.  Last night while I was getting ready for bed I went into my closet to put my shoes away and lo and behold what did I find?  Sam’s pajama shirt tucked just so in between the hangers on my side of the closet.  I have 2 bars, one high and one low, and the low one is at the right height for Sam to reach.  From the way it was tucked, I really think she was trying to put her shirt away and not just stash it somewhere.

Tonight Mark was making dinner and he had the placemats and silverware on the table but not the plates since we were having pasta and he generally plates the food on the counter for us.  Sam was busy playing in the cabinet with the paper plates, the napkins and various other odds and ends that we store in there.  I turned around to see what she was doing and she had just finished very nicely placing on single paper plate at each of our three places.  It was done so perfectly.  She looked so proud of herself.

We try to praise her when she does things like that to let her know she is being helpful and we are proud of how grown up she has become. I wonder what she will do next?  She does like to dustmop the floors for my mom…maybe I can get her to clean bathrooms?  Yeah, I don’t think so either…

Sam’s 2 year well visit

| September 26, 2011

Sam went to the pediatrician today for her 2 year well visit.  She did great!  Sam is now 34.5″ tall and 24 lbs. 7 oz.  She is still on the same growth pattern – tall and skinny, basically.  She is in the 69th percentile for height and the 21st for weight.  She got the last vaccine she will need until she is about school age, and she did get a flu shot.  My little girl was so brave though and she didn’t cry.  The doctor and I talked about her development, how she talks, how she plays, how she is growing and Sam is right on schedule.  We talked a lot about how picky an eater Sam is and the doctor told me not to worry because the food she eats, although it is a limited menu, is very healthy, really good food.  Allegedly, eventually, as Sam gets older, she will be more willing to try new food.  We will see about that…

In other news, Sam has finally started saying thank you when we give her things.  It is so cute, it comes out “Tank Ooo”.  I noticed it one day last week but I wasn’t sure if that was what she was saying.  She has done it a few times since then so I am sure that is what she is saying.  It is so nice because we have really been trying to get her to say it and the times that she does say it it has been completely on her own without any prompting from us.

Sam is such a big girl now.  Every day she just says more things and does more things.  It seems like she is growing by leaps and bounds.  It is almost like when she was a baby and every day there was something new.  She loves to try new things and to help Mommy and Daddy with whatever we are doing.  Today she noticed that the little connector that holds the cords of the blinds together was disconnected. It has been coming apart.  Sam kept telling us it was broken. It wasn’t really, but we agreed with her and told her, yes, it was broken. She immediately ran to Mark’s toolbag that we keep in the closet and pulled out a screwdriver.  She knows that Mark uses tools to fix things and was obviously trying to help.

It looks like there will have to be a lot more frequent blog posts now to keep up with all of Sam’s activities!

Playground fun

| September 25, 2011

This has been the rainiest few weeks we have ever had, it seems like.  We haven’t been able to get Sam out as much as we have wanted to.  Today, the rain let up and it was actually a pretty nice day.  Mark and I took Sam to the playground so she could play on the slide.  I was so upset that I missed her very first slide by herself on Thursday and Mark wanted to get her back there as soon as we could so I could see it.

Sam has always been such a cautious little girl.  She never rushes head first into anything.  She thinks and explores and examines and finally, maybe, she will decide it is ok to do or try.  We have been trying to get her to go down a slide for months, at least, and she just wouldn’t go on her own.  All of the sudden she decided it was time.  Mark said she pushed his leg out of the way and down she went.

Here is our very grown up little girl on the very big slide!

After all the sliding, we hit the merry go round.  This is also something Sam was never really comfortable with. Not anymore!  She loved spinning round and round.

Party Time!

| September 25, 2011

We had Sam’s birthday party the day after her birthday.  We kept it small this year, just her grandparents, her Aunt Krista, Uncle Adam and her cousin Maddox.  Since even with that small group, it is 10 people, we made a turkey.  Sam was a big help.  She was so funny.  The turkey was done earlier than we expected, so we took it out of the oven and tented it with foil.  As soon as Mark covered it, Sam started saying, “Hiding!  Hiding!”  I love that she is wearing all her new beads that Mark and I gave her.  She had just opened them that morning and couldn’t resist putting them all on.  And I mean, “all”.

Sam and Maddox had fun playing outside after dinner while we cleaned up.

Sam got so many nice presents — among other things, lots of clothes and pajamas, some Elmo books, a jewelry box from my Aunt Barbara, a cradle for her baby dolls from her Grandmom and Poppy, and a tricycle from her Mom Mom and Pop Pop.  We can’t wait to see her tooling around the sidewalk in the spring!  Her legs are just slightly too short to reach the pedals yet, but she will be riding it in no time.  We purposely picked a trike that was a little bigger so she can enjoy it longer.

Here is Sam’s cake!  Her party had an Elmo theme since he is tops in her book.

Sam just loves the singing and the candles for birthdays.  We have had a lot of that lately with both of her grandmoms and then her mommy.  She was so glad it was her turn!  Poppy was nice enough to put her up on the table so she got a great view of her cake.

The proud mom and dad with their very special birthday girl. 🙂

Sam really liked her cake.  After each bite I gave her she’d say, “Mmmmmm!”

One of Sam’s other presents that turned out to be one of her favorite things, was her tea set that Krista, Adam and Maddox gave her.  I think she watches Grandmom make a lot of tea because she knew exactly what to do!  She was pouring us all tea and handing out cups in no time!

Sunday morning, most of her balloons had deflated a bit, so they were down low for Sam to drag around the house. She loves balloons.

Maybe she needs some help navigating the house here.  I don’t even think she could see!

Sam’s 2nd Birthday

| September 25, 2011

Sam’s 2nd birthday happened to be on a Friday this year which was convenient since I am off from work that day.  Although, let’s be serious, I would have taken off for my little girl’s birthday no matter what day of the week it was!  Anyway, it was really nice being home with her and being able to spend the whole day lavishing attention on her and letting her know how special the day was.  Mark was working at home, which was also great, since we all got to have lunch together, and Sam got to pop down to see him a few times during the day.

Sam started her day by cleaning house!  She uses her corn popper like a vacuum cleaner.  Oh, yes, those are my slippers she is wearing!  I love the outfit she had on, it was so fall-like.  Sam adorned it with her stickers as you can see.

Her big gift from Mark and I was a table and chairs.  She loves little chairs.  Our Carter’s store has a set and Sam spends more time rearranging the chairs and pushing them in and out than actually sitting in them, but we knew she would love it.  I think the expression on her face and the big smile says it all.  She had Grover sitting down in no time, then later Raggedy Ann and Andy.

Sam quickly got the idea and settled with a good book.

She does this all the time now when we are reading — she grabs the book and says, “Hide!” and covers her face. She stays that way until I tickle her mercilessly.

After a pizza dinner, one of Sam’s favorites, we had doughnuts in lieu of cake, since her party was the next day.  Sam picked out her very own doughnut at the supermarket that morning, one with “M’s” (what she calls M&Ms) on it.  She liked that we were singing to her.

Here are Mark and Sam blowing out her candle.  Sam did make a good whoosh but she needed some help.

After her doughnut, and after putting on her pajamas, it was present time!  Sam loves to open presents, so we got her a bunch of little things so she had packages to open.  Her table and chairs were nice, but they weren’t covered in wrapping paper!  Here she is opening her little Sesame Street figures — Elmo, Cookie Monster, Super Grover and Oscar the Grouch.

All in all, Sam had a great day and so did we!
