Happy Birthday Pam!

| September 15, 2011

Happy Birthday to wife and Mommy extraordinaire Pam! We had a nice subdued birthday celebration at home today and I think both Pam and Sam had a very nice time. Pam got a lot of presents and needed some help opening them. As usual, Sam was happy to oblige.

Both Sam and Pam got two sets of matching PJs, one with bears on them and one with sea horses.

Pam also got a hat that Sam of course had to try on!

Next was Pam’s favorite part of the celebrations, the cake!

Sam really likes when we sing happy birthday and likes to blow out the candles.

Zephyr also very nicely posed for a photo with her Mom.

Mark!

Yesterday, Mark and I took Sam to Lenscrafters so that we could both pick out some long overdue new pairs of glasses.  It took a really long time since we both needed regular glasses and sunglasses and Mark also wanted a pair of safety glasses.  It takes a long time for us to pick even one new frame, much less all of those.  We were in there for a while and Sam was really good the whole time.  She kept running around yelling, “glasses!” and bringing me frame after frame to try on.  Some of the ones she brought me were interesting….

We had been there since about 10:30 0r so and at around 12:00 Mark was done getting fitted and checking out so he offered to take Sam across the parking lot to Chik-Fil-A so that she could eat lunch and we could get her home as soon as possible for her nap.  We usually put her down around 12:30 or 1:00 so it was getting late.  He wanted to stop at the restroom first and I sat down with Sam to get my fitting and whatnot.  When I realized that Mark had my new prescription in his pocket, I called his name to get his attention as he was way across the store.

Sam was sitting on my lap bouncing around and I wasn’t really paying much attention to her.  The clerk said to me, “Did she just say, ‘Mark’?”  and it finally penetrated my brain that yes, she was in fact calling his name because she heard me doing it.  I asked her, “did you just call your daddy Mark?” and she smiled and tucked her little head into my chest.  She knew she was being funny.

A few more times we have gotten her to do it.  Tonight at Mark’s parents’ house we asked Sam, “what is daddy’s other name?” and she said, clear as a bell, “Mark!”

Sam hasn’t learned to say Pam yet (she still calls herself Nam) but I am sure it is coming.  She hears — and repeats — everything we say, so we have to learn to watch ourselves and definitely screen our language, that’s for sure.  She has already repeated a few, shall we say, adult-only words, thanks to us.  Yikes!

Sweetest Face

That’s it.  That’s all I have to say.  I could just eat her up!  Look at that face!

Steve Jobs would be so proud

Our friend Teresa introduced Sam to the joys of an iPhone when they first came out.  I got one myself a few months ago and it amazed me how quickly Sam figured out that (a) it was a lot of fun, and (b) how it works.  Now, she says, phone, phone! whenever she wants to play Talking Tom (an app that is a little cartoon cat that repeats whatever you say and purrs when you pet him) or to watch her movie, The Gruffalo, that I downloaded for her.  It is unbelievable to me that at not even 2 years of age, she knows how to navigate my phone to find what she wants.

Here we were trying to find her favorite part of The Gruffalo, the part with the snake.

You can see her little fingers here scrolling through the photos.  Yup, she knows how to do that too.

Why do I think one day my phone is going to disappear?  I can’t even imagine what the new gizmo will be when Sam is a teenager!  She will think our old stuff is so lame, I am sure.

The wagon train

| September 10, 2011

We were all outside playing recently and Sam kept pulling at her wagon. I asked her if she wanted to go for a walk and I got a resounding “yes!” as a response.  So off we went!

When we got home, she wanted out before I hit the driveway.  I figured out why…Sam wanted to do the pulling for a while!
