Big Girl Bed!

| February 17, 2012

Last night Sam spent her first night in her big girl bed instead of a crib.  Granted, it is still her crib, we have just done the toddler bed conversion, but she definitely has the freedom now to get in and out at will, which is a big change for her.  Her sleep habits have been so horrible lately, and coupled with her attempted escape that could have resulted in a fall, we knew it was time to change.

It has been really hard lately with Sam waking us up every couple of hours at night.  That, along with her refusal to even go to sleep in the first place, has been exhausting for Mark and me.  It got so bad that my mom offered to keep her overnight Wednesday night even though that meant I wouldn’t see her from drop off on Wednesday morning before work until after work on Thursday.  I have never spent 2 days away from my girl in her life!  But…we needed it. I was at the point of actual tears I was getting so frustrated.  Of course, she slept like a champ for my mom, didn’t fight at all going to bed and then slept until around 7:00 in the morning!  So, I had my confirmation that she was playing games with us and that is all I needed to decide we had to be tough with her and make her go to sleep.

Our plan was to convert her crib over the weekend. My mom spent a lot of time with her on Wednesday and Thursday watching YouTube videos about “big girl beds” which I do think helped because my mom said she was very interested in them.  Mark got ambitious and offered to do the conversion Thursday night so  I kept her downstairs while he got everything ready.  When he was done, he yelled down to her, “Sam, do you want to see your big girl bed?” and boy did she fly up the stairs.  When she saw it she was so excited!  She kept smiling and saying, “Climb in and out!” over and over while climbing in and out over and over again.  It did take us a long time to get her to go to sleep, over an hour.  But once she went down, she slept until 6:30 a.m.!  That was the best night I have had with her in months.  Today she wouldn’t nap, but she did exactly what I have been telling her she can do in her big girl bed — she got up and played quietly in her room for an hour, no crying, no yelling, just being a very good girl.

Today I bought her a reward present — she picked it out herself.  Of all the things she could have picked, she chose not a toy, but jewelry.  Sam is now the proud owner of a sterling silver, crystal encrusted frog necklace.  She wore it proudly all day.  Sam, we are so proud of our big girl!  We love you!

Nonuts!

Sam loves her donuts (or as she calls them, nonuts).  Ever since I bought her one at the grocery store she thinks every time I take her that she is getting a donut.  Well, most of the time she does, so….Most of the time I go to the market alone, after she goes to bed because it is just easier, but yesterday, I brought her with me.  She likes to pick out her own donut each time and she usually picks the one with the M&Ms on it.  For whatever reason, this pink frosted, sprinkle crusted one caught her eye.  Do you think she enjoyed it?

Love that face!

I can’t say it enough…my girl is the cutest!

The artist is at work again

I have bought these gel window cling decorations quite a few times and every time I do, Sam always takes it upon herself to rearrange them.  I had these 4 cute little snowmen all lined up in the window over Christmas and Sam recently decided they were quite a mess the way I had them.

This is her modification:

Not long after that, everything had to move to the kitchen window, and from there, all the pieces migrated into the dining room window.

My artist at work!  She certainly has her own ideas about the way things should look.  I think I am going to buy her a Mr. Potato Head to see what she comes up with!

Enjoying Winter with Sam

| February 11, 2012

It has been a really crazy winter so far.  Very warm, and hardly any snow.  I am not complaining, mind you, just a comment.  It is good for Sam, for sure, because the warmer air means more time outside.  And Sam really loves the outside, she is like her daddy that way.  Mark has been trying to instill a love of the great outdoors in her for as long as I can remember and it seems to be working.  Every day she can she takes a long walk with her Poppy and Sam and Mark go outside to play all the time.  Here are some pictures of her latest escapades.

Sam loves to kick and throw balls around. She has quite an arm, and a really strong kick!  I think I have a little soccer player on my hands.

Here she is just being a goofball.

My pretty girl deciding what to do next.

She had just about every ball she owned outside that day, even some indoor ones.  She thought the mess in the yard was quite funny.

I love that look she gets when she is in the middle of a huge laugh.  Her whole face just lights up with glee.

All windblown from playing.

One of Sam’s favorite things to do is hold Zephyr’s leash.  Zephyr isn’t always too thrilled about it, but this day, everyone played nicely together.
