Zephyr and Sam

| March 7, 2012

Sam is so in love with her kitties.  My mom’s cats, Blackie and Bella, are nicer to her than Zephyr is, especially Blackie.  He is so tolerant of her, putting up with all her squishing of him, her shoving her toys in his face to show him things, and her friendly torture that she thinks of as hugging.  Bella is getting more used to Sam.  Zephyr has actually been the hardest.  She is taking longer than all of the other cats to come around.  I think it is only natural since she is the one who has cause to be jealous.  My mom’s cats know that Sam is just visiting and don’t feel quite so put out.  We have tried so hard to pay as much attention to our little cat as we can.  We love her so dearly and don’t want her to feel second best.  But…as you can imagine, it has been hard.  Sam has to come first most of the time and we have to pay attention to her.  Usually, if one of us is with Sam, and Zephyr is around, the other tries to be with Zephyr.

We have tried to let Sam touch and hug and get to know Zephyr as much as possible without forcing Zephyr to make nice.  Zephyr has never, ever hurt Sam or even been aggressive, but most of the time she would rather Sam just stay away.  She is getting better all the time though.  We praise her when she lets Sam do things to her, and we have been trying to let Sam help take care of Zephyr by combing her, giving her food, and putting ice in her water so that Zephyr sees Sam as helpful and not a pain in the butt.

This day, Sam was so proud that she was helping to feed Zephyr and I was so proud of my little cat for letting Sam help.  I want them to bond and be friends and this day was a very good step.

The artiste at work

Our little Picasso was hard at work again!  It has always been sort of sad to me that she has very little interest in coloring for some reason.  I personally love to color and couldn’t wait to whip out the crayons with Sam when she was old enough.  She just isn’t that into it for some reason.  I think partially, it has to do with the fact that you have to press down a bit to get the color to show up, and she just doesn’t have the hang of it yet.  She got some washable magic markers for Christmas and she does love those, although, I will admit, I don’t give them to her very often.  They do, as advertised, wash up really easily, but she makes such a mess, grabbing all the tips all the time that I can’t deal with it.  So, not so much magic markering.  She did discover finger paints recently.  Yeah, I know, they are MORE of a mess, but I can’t inhibit my daughter completely!  Here is our little artist working hard.

Look how daintily she has one finger in the paint.  She is so funny.  She likes the painting, but after every dip or two in the paint she asks us to clean her fingers.  Alas, my tendencies toward excessive neatness have carried over onto my poor child!  I hate having messy hands, to the extent that I am weird about eating certain food because it causes too much of a mess, and I think I have projected into onto her a little bit.  Well, I am working on not letting her get that way, I want her to explore, have fun, make a mess, and be a kid!  Sam, you keep on painting, and spilling, and making a mess — have fun, kiddo!
