Zephyr and Sam

| September 22, 2012

I have mentioned a few times before that Zephyr isn’t quite sure what to do about Sam.  Do I despise her, do I tolerate her, do I like her? Well, I think over the years, it has moved from one end of the spectrum to the next.  I really think she wasn’t happy Sam was here for a while, then she moved on to a disregard, and now I think she sort of grudgingly likes her.  Sam has made a lot of progress though in learning how to be nice to her and when to leave her alone and how much hugging is too much.  When Sam was an infant, we caught Zephyr in her pack and play once or twice, but we have always wondered why Zephyr never jumped into Sam’s crib (we suspect laziness — too high a jump).  We thought for sure that now that Sam has a twin bed, Zephyr would be right in there.  Sure enough, Zephyr did jump on it when it first came into the house, but quickly left.  Sam would absolutely love if Zephyr would sleep with her, even just in her room, but it never seems to come to pass. Until now!  I went upstairs tonight to get Sam’s towels for her bath and when I turned around to face the bed, there was Zephyr!  Snoozing away as happy as could be.  I think it was Zephyr’s birthday present for Sam.  As you can imagine, Sam was thrilled.  It took all her willpower to not jump right up on the bed with Zephyr.

The best part is that Zephyr stayed there.  I was ready to put Sam to bed and Zephyr was still there. I told Sam that if she was very quiet and still that Zephyr might stay and sleep with her.  She must have really wanted some furry company, because she even let me forgo the nightly book and we turned the light out immediately.  I whispered to her that I could maybe tell her a story since we didn’t read a book and she whispered back, “Tell a very quiet story, Mommy.” Which I did.  And in less than five minutes, Sam was asleep.  I unfortunately don’t have any pictures of them sleeping together since, to take a picture, I would have had to turn the light on, but I did take some video using our camcorder’s night shot mode.  Zephyr stayed with Sam for a few hours then came and slept with Mark and me as usual.  I am so glad they are bonding so much better now.  They both mean so much to me, my little girls.
