Planting

| October 15, 2012

I had a bunch of tulip bulbs to put in the ground this year and Sam wanted to help. She loves digging around in the dirt so Mark and I knew she would love it.  Although it was hard for her to help me dig the holes since they need to be so deep, she did try.

Her favorite part was actually putting the bulbs into the holes, and then covering them up with dirt.  In fact, when I tried to cover them myself, I was told in no uncertain terms that it was her job to do that!

I can’t wait until next year when they all pop up (I planted 50!) Sam will be so excited to see them sprouting, then turning into beautiful multicolored flowers.  Those squirrels better not dig in my mulch. They are great at stealing bulbs.  I’m on to you squirrels — look out!

Fire Company Open House

| October 13, 2012

Our fire house, which is pretty big, holds and open house each year during fire prevention week.  We took Sam for the first time last year and she loved it!  For some reason, I don’t think I posted about it before.  So, this is what we are going to do.  I have some pics from last year, and some from this year.  I am posting them all!  Wait until you see how my girl has changed!

Anyway, this year, they had a miniature coast guard vehicle that was being remotely operated by one of the firemen.  It was about 3 feet square, and looked like a boat.  The man operating it also was able to make it talk, and Sam was so enamored with it. She loves robots in general for some reason, so this moving, talking robot-like boat was magical.

Last year, Sam’s favorite part of last year’s open house was the bear.  Oh, her love affair with the bear.  She had never really seen anything like this before and when he shook her hand, she talked about it non-stop.  How the bear touched her hand.  She was actually walking around with her hand out like she was afraid to rub off whatever wonderful vibes he gave her.  Now remember, this next pic is from 2011 — look how little Sam seems!

Mark took a picture of me and Sam in front of the fire engine this year…

…and last year too.  My little fire girl is growing up so fast.

Pumpkinland 2012

| October 12, 2012

Mark took some time off so that we could bring Sam to Linvilla Orchards to pick out some pumpkins.  She loves this time of year and is very excited about Halloween.  She has been telling me for months that she wants to be a frog this Halloween (she has never had a different response to my question about what she wants to be).  We decorated our house more extensively than in the past and every year she likes when the pumpkins come in. We have orange lights strung and lots of decorations hanging in the house and on the door and windows.  She loves the spiders I think best, which I think is so funny since spiders are not exactly my cup of tea.

When we went to Linvilla, our first stop was the animals, which are her favorite part of Linvilla Orchards.  Never mind all the yummy food they grow there (or the pie….oh, the apple pie….).  Sam is much more interested in the chickens, ducks, deer and other assorted creatures.  After the animals, and the playground, FINALLY, we got to the pumpkins!  By this point, it was nearing when she usually takes a nap, when she takes one, and she was so tired, she just kept asking to go home.  But once she saw all the pumpkins, she got into it.

Sam loved these white ones, which I have never really seen before. Maybe because they were just so unusual?

She kept handing me pumpkin after pumpkin and wanting to take them all home.

When we pointed out the stripy ones, she couldn’t get over there fast enough!  If they could make polka dotted ones, she’d be in heaven!

I love this picture.  She looks so cute, so ready for fall.

Sam and her daddy, sporting his new beard!  I like it and so does Sam. 🙂

Legos to the sky!

| October 9, 2012

Sam loves her Lego blocks. Well, actually, they are the Duplo ones, that are bigger for little kids, but she loves them. One of her favorite things is building huge towers.  Sometimes, she makes us help her build towers that literally reach our ceiling — she calls them “Legos to the sky”.  Recently, she was playing with her Legos and made this really wonderful tower all on her own. She was so proud, I had to take some pictures!

A few days later, she got Mark to help her build yet again…

Maybe I have an architect in the making!

Sam’s 3 Year Checkup

| October 6, 2012

Yesterday was Sam’s 3 year checkup at the pediatrician.  After the dentist this week, I wasn’t really looking forward to it, but she is generally pretty good at the doctor.  She doesn’t cry or make a fuss, even when she gets shots.  A lot of the doctors actually comment on how good she is.  And, she has been really into watching Doc McStuffins on TV and is constantly giving all her stuffed animals their checkups.  But you never know.

Why was I worried?  Our little girl did great!  The only part she really didn’t like was when I made her get undressed. She didn’t understand why she had to take her clothes off.  Sam got weighed and measured and they took her blood pressure for the first time.  That, she was not too thrilled about.  I can understand why.  Those blood pressure cuffs squeeze pretty hard and she had no idea what was going on.  She sat on my lap the whole time and it took longer than it should have since she kept moving her arm around, but they got it and she was done.  Her weight was 27 lbs, 12.5 oz (19th percentile for weight – typical, my skinny minny girl), her height was 37.5″ (53rd percentile for height – again typical, she is tall) and her BMI (which they have never really done before was 13.89 (or the 4th percentile).  I am always concerned about her weight, but the doctor thankfully was not.  Sam has always been tall and thin and as long as she stays in that same growth pattern, there is nothing to worry about.  We also discussed her eating habits, her pickiness, etc. and again, the doctor was not concerned.  She did try to offer some encouraging words about how once she starts preschool and sees the other kids eating other foods, she may join in.  Her blood pressure was 106/74, which was very good.

I also asked the doctor for some vitamins with fluoride. She needs the vitamins I think based on her lack of food variety and the fluoride I want since she is a pain about brushing her teeth.  She won’t let me use toothpaste without a huge fight.  Anyway, what a surprise, Sam wants nothing to do with her chewable vitamins!  If they could make them look like M&Ms, I may have a shot at getting her to try them.

Lastly, Sam got her annual flu shot.  She was really good and just barely whimpered a bit at the end, but she never cried.  I asked the doctor what shots are coming up and she told me there are a bunch next year, mostly because of school.  So we have those good times to look forward to!

I am just so grateful and so happy that our little girl is so healthy, and “normal” and wonderful.  I can’t imagine life without her. And I hear all the time about people with sick kids and my heart goes out to them.  Sam is so perfect, at least to us, that we are the luckiest parents in the world.
