Who let a snowman in our house?

| November 30, 2012

I bought this refrigerator snowman kit when we were down the shore last year and Sam and I had fun assembling him on Thanksgiving weekend.   He is pretty cute, although, maybe if we had a white fridge he’d look a little better…

Anyway, half of the fun for Sam has been rearranging the pieces.  Her latest endeavor is being a snowman herself!  She thought this was hysterically funny, and honestly, we did too. 🙂

Snip Snip

| November 26, 2012

Sam loves her scissors.  She has a set of safety scissors, which, although they are “safe” in that they don’t have pointy ends, they are not safe in that they are darn sharp!  She already cut one of her stuffed animals by mistake (Dress Up Kitty’s boo boo got sewn up by Dr. Mommy and she sports a band-aid now).  Well…today, she was clipping her “coupons” (pictures out of a toy catalog) and I was watching TV instead of her (BIG mistake).  I heard a somewhat excited, “Look, Mommy!” and there Sam was holding up an approximately 4″ lock of hair.  My first reaction was, of course, to scream.  Thankfully, when she cut her hair, she didn’t grab the entire length of it, just a portion on the top, so she didn’t completely cut off the length of her hair.  You honestly can’t even tell where she cut it since it all blends in like when your hair is layered.  But of course, I flipped out anyway, she got scared and started crying, and it was a huge mess.  Needless to say, the scissors were confiscated for a while.  I told her she scared Mommy and that she could have hurt herself, but let’s be honest, my real thought was OH NO WE HAVEN’T TAKEN CHRISTMAS PICTURES YET!  No real damage done though.  I learned my lesson….watch her like a hawk with those scissors!

Trimming the Tree, 2012 Edition

| November 25, 2012

This year we were able to put our tree up super early since we have the artificial one.  Last year, we decided very last minute to buy an artificial tree so it was around the middle of the month, like usual, before the tree was up and decorated.  I never thought I would like a fake tree, but honestly, it is so great being able to have it up early, not have to water it, not having pine needles all over the floor…there are a lot of benefits, true.  Sam was so excited when we got everything out.  She donned all her Santa gear and was ready to go! (I didn’t put any of this on her, other than the pants, of course….she decked herself out all by herself).

I wanted a nice picture of the two of us, but Sam was being silly, as usual.

Every single ornament we have is wrapped in tissue paper, so Sam has a blast wondering what is each little package.  Every time she’d grab one, she would say, “I see something!  I see something!  It’s….it’s….it’s a [insert animal/Santa/other assorted ornament here]!  We were cracking up she was so excited and so cute.  We did take a video of her saying it because it is too cute to miss.

Most of our ornaments are non-breakable, thankfully, and we let her decorate a huge portion of the tree by herself.

These animal ornaments are some of her favorites.  We got a few duplicates, like the giraffes, and she likes to hang them next to each other so they can, “be friends together”.

Every ornament you see here, Sam hung all by herself.  I think she did a great job!

These Snoopy ornaments are old as the hills and Sam LOVED them last year. She took them off the tree all the time. I wondered if she’d remember them this year, and she certainly did!

The jingle bells are always a favorite of hers too.  Anything with jingle bells is a hit in Sam’s book.

Zephyr always makes herself right at home under the tree.  She was scurrying under there before an ornament was even on it — before we even had the whole tree assembled, in fact!

Making the Christmas Raviolis

| November 24, 2012

This year we decided to maintain the annual tradition of making the raviolis for Christmas dinner. We kept it on a much smaller scale this year, and only made enough for Christmas dinner, and not the hundreds and hundreds we normally make. I think when all was said and done we wound up with just over 200 and it took us about 2 hours. We made them at Krista and Adam’s new house this year which was a switch from doing them at our house like we normally do. Everyone worked really hard and we had a lot of fun, even the kiddos.

Conversations with my girl

| November 23, 2012

Sam and I had such a lovely conversation today. I have a lot of pain in my knees, mainly from the onset of arthritis, which stinks. I pretty much always hurt in my knees but I run around with Sam all the time because I refuse to let it stop me from having fun with my girl. Sometimes though, standing up, or moving a certain way, well…it just hurts. Today, I did something, I can’t remember what, and I kind of ow’d and this is what transpired.

Me: [quietly] Ow.
Sam: Mommy? Why you say “Ow”?
Me: My knee hurts, honey.
Sam: Why your knee hurt?
Me: I dunno. It just does. Mommy is getting old.
Sam: You not old, Mommy! You perfect!

Well. What can you say to that? Is that the most wonderful thing a little girl could say? I wish I had it taped. Someday, when she is about 13, and thinks I know nothing about anything, I will need to hear that conversation over and over and over again. But for today, in my little girl’s eyes, I was as perfect as I think she is.
