The simple joy of snow

| December 30, 2012

To Sam’s immense pleasure, we got another snowstorm yesterday! She couldn’t wait to get out in it. We had known snow was coming but didn’t tell her about it. It was supposed to have been snowing from the time we woke up but Mother Nature was sure taking her time. Mark got up with her early and by the time I rolled out of bed after 9:00, there was not a single bit of snow. A few hours later, I looked out the door and saw the first few flakes coming down, but very lightly. It came on very quick though once it started. I stopped paying attention to what was going on, because not long after, while Sam and I were sitting on the couch playing, all the sudden she looked up at the window and yelled, “It’s snowing!” Sure enough, we went over to the window and the grass was completely covered. That is all it took — she couldn’t get outside fast enough. It was hard making her wait long enough for us all to get our warm clothes on, to get her bundled up, and to get all of our boots on.

Sam had the best time. Look at that happy face!  My little snow bunny.

First order of business…making snowballs!  Sam made quite a few and threw them at us, all the while yelling, Snowball Fight!

She wasn’t at all hesitant about the snow nor did she mind the cold. It was a perfect snowy day — the snow was wet enough to be good packing snow, and although it was cold, there was no wind.

She managed to hit both Mark and I quite a few times and was quite proud of herself too. She’s got a good arm!

Look out! You might be next!

Next order of business was making a snowman. Mark showed her how to roll a ball and she got right into it. She was rather good which surprised me.

We made three snowmen, two in the backyard and one in the front. Here is the best one, in progress. We have a “snowman kit” with wooden pieces and other accessories that Sam likes to use.

Ta da! Here he is. Sam put all the pieces on herself (although we did guide her a bit).

We pulled her on her sled around the yard which she loved, then it was her turn to pull the sled. She kept filling it up with snowballs to tow.

Snow angel! She saw them do this on Doc McStuffins and liked it. Mark made some with her, and she just fell right down to do her own. I still remember clearly one of her first snows when she wouldn’t even walk in the snow, much less lie down. Boy, how times have changed!

We were all outside playing for a long time before Sam got cold when she took her mittens off. All in all, it was a perfect snow day!

The snow didn’t last long, and Sam can’t wait for the next time.
