Cinderella

| June 22, 2013

Well, it finally happened. Sam discovered princesses. It took a while since Mark and I were never happy with the whole Disney Princess obsession that most little girls have these days. We tried to steer her away from it and never allowed her to have any clothes that said anything about being a princess or anything like that. It was something we were very conscious of. I read a book called, Cinderella Ate My Daughter about the psychological damage it can do letting little girls buy into that whole princess culture at too young an age and it really made me think. That being said, let’s face it, I am a girl and I love my princess stories as much as the next girl. I knew at some point Sam would know who the princesses are and I would be ok with it, provided that she knew she was not a princess, that it was only for pretending. I am not even sure how it happened to be honest, but recently, we sat down and watched my DVD of Disney’s Cinderella together.  And it was awesome. Just like I remember it. Cinderella is the penultimate princess, as far as I am concerned. The story is enchanting and Sam was certainly enchanted. Ever since then she has watched it a bunch of times and now has a Cinderella nightgown and a few figurines to play with. And I am ok with that. Her latest discovery is a new Disney cartoon called Sophia the First about a little girl who becomes a princess when her mom marries the king. It is cute, and has messages about how being a princess means being kind, and generous, and thoughtful. I guess there are worse things she could be learning. Mark and I did our job. Sam knows that being a princess is a game. And she knows she is so much more than that, and that being a princess is not something you aspire to be. It’s not a job. It’s a story. So…on with the princesses, I guess!

Father’s Day

| June 17, 2013

Happy Father’s Day, Mark! Sam and I are so happy we get to celebrate with you. Your little girl knows how lucky she is to have you for a dad.

First order of business was opening presents! These days, no one gets to open their own gifts since Sam wants to open everything.  That’s ok though. She has such a good time it adds to the joy.

She likes cooking with us so she thought a new thermometer was a good idea.

For weeks I tried to get Sam to do some sort of craft with me to give to Mark. My birdhouses were so special, that I wanted him to have something nice too. She was so incredibly uncooperative though and I couldn’t get her to focus on anything. Finally, I got her to sit down and make him a heart out of clay, since that is something special they do together. She was mighty excited about her own gift, as you can see.

A smooch for her best guy.

Later that day, we went outside to take some pictures of Mark and his number one girl.  There are never as many pictures of them together as of me and Sam so I know when we get a good one, he cherishes it. I hope these will do.

I hope you had a wonderful day and know how lucky you are to have the perfect daughter. She knows she has the perfect dad, I am sure.

My New Car

| June 15, 2013

Although my 2002 Honda Accord has been running like a dream, and I have no complaints about it at all, the itch for a new car has been at me for a while.  Mark and I went back and forth for a while trying to decide if I should take the plunge and buy one and we finally decided it was time.  Mark’s parents bought my old Honda from us, so it is staying in the family. 🙂  With only 44,000 miles on it, it should be sticking around for a long time!  Sam loved going to the various car dealers with us and sitting in all the new cars.  She would run around the showroom racing from car to car yelling excitedly, “Now let’s try this one!”  I was in so many cars that I had no intention of buying, but that’s ok, she had a blast. When I finally got my new car (a new Accord, but the nicest one – my first car with a leather interior – GPS, the works), she loved it, although, she did ask me, “Mom? Are you going to miss your car?” referring to my old Honda.  So sweet.

Here are some pics of my new baby!

It’s a good thing 16 is a long way off – she looks a little too ready to cruise down the street!
