Learning our letters

| July 11, 2013

Mark and I have really been trying to work with Sam on her letters (or, her ABs as she calls them). She knows the alphabet, and has for a really long time, but she doesn’t recognize most of the letters nor can she write them. So, even though I know they will teach her in preschool this fall, we wanted to really focus on them. Like in most things, she is learning better from Mark than from me. He comes up with good games for her to teach her instead of just trying to out and out, teach. He came up with a game where he gets her letter flashcards and spread them out on the floor. He then drew a letter on her Magna Doodle and made her find the same letter on the floor. She did really well but quickly progressed to, “I can draw it, Daddy!”

I have to say, for her first real attempt at writing, she did so well!  Here are some of her creations.

Sam still holds her writing implements in a fist, but we have been working on getting her to use a proper grip. I think once she does, her letters will take on even better shape.

(She always draws extra lines on her E…)

Besides the drawing, we have been pointing out letters in her books and asking her to tell us what they are. She has been doing great.  Every day she learns more and more letters. She asks me now all the time when we read, “Let’s learn my letters!” She is excited about it and so proud when she knows each one. There are a bunch she still does not know, but I am so amazed at how quickly she is learning. Kids really are such sponges – now is the time to learn everything we can throw at her. I can’t wait until she starts school to see what she figures out next!

A field of Black-Eyed Susans. A camera. A beautiful little girl. You know where this is going, right? How could I resist taking more pictures of Sam.

Sam and Mark went to one of her favorite playgrounds, Rolling Green Park, on Rolling Road here in Springfield.  She calls it the “Orange Playground” because, simply, the equipment is mostly orange.  Hey, it works. We know what she means.  Anyway, it is a really nice playground that looks like it was just dumped in the middle of the woods.  There is a good sized creek at the one end of it where Sam can stroll along picking up rocks and other interesting things and the playground is completely shaded because of all the trees.  That is the good part.  The bad part is, well, trees have roots.  Roots that stick up out of the ground and trip little girls.  Who then come crying home with two skinned knees.  Poor Sam. 🙁 I told her that her mommy ALWAYS had two skinned knees when she was little.  My melodramatic daughter played up her “injuries” like a true Oscar award winning actress.  She ceased crying fairly quickly but then acted like an invalid the entire rest of the day. She wouldn’t walk, she wouldn’t bend her legs, she needed everything brought to her poor, injured self on the couch. She even asked me t0 scratch the bottom of her foot because she had an itch and just couldn’t reach it.  We did feel badly for her so we let her milk it for all it was worth for the one day.  By morning, she was ok. She still has skinned knees but she is as rambunctious as ever.  Here are some really cute pictures of her having fun before her injuries occurred.

Summer fun

Last year Sam saw this Melissa and Doug sprinkler and just HAD TO HAVE IT.  I didn’t buy it because, well, it was winter when she spied it, but I kept telling her maybe when it gets warm. It’s warm, definitely, so when she saw it again this year I just couldn’t say no.  This is the first sprinkler Sam has ever played in and she wasn’t quite sure what to do at first, but then she jumped right into it!

Hmm..I seem to be getting wet here…

Yes! I am wet!  This is awesome!

A few ballet moves…

Oh no!  Not in my face!

Boy, it’s hot out here, maybe a little drink would be in order.

She loved this part, trying to drink like it was a fountain.

Almost as good as the pool!  Thanks Mom!

Happy Independence Day!

This year, we didn’t do much 4th of July-ish, no parade, no fireworks, but we did have a wonderful, relaxing day off with Sam at the pool. We had planned on trying to take her to see fireworks this year (it would be her first time) but at the last minute decided against it. She was so wiped out from the pool that it would have been pushing her limits. Fireworks would have meant staying up way past her bedtime and hoping she wasn’t freaked out by the noise (her one big fear is loud noises). Oh well, maybe next year!  Happy Independence Day!
