Spooks and Fairies and Superheroes, on Parade!

| October 30, 2013

Today was Sam’s very first Halloween parade at school. She was so excited the entire day. It is a Wednesday, so I was working and my mom was taking her to school. She apparently talked about nothing but school the entire day. I know she likes to go to school, but my mom said it was early morning and she wanted to know if it was time to go yet! It was supposed to be outside, but since the weather was so terrible (it rained in the morning and was cold cold cold!) the school moved it inside to the church. The kids paraded up the aisle and then sang all the Halloween songs they have been practicing. Like I said, I had to work, but since the parade was a lunchtime, I drove over to the school to see her. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world! Not only would Sam have been sad if I didn’t go, but I would never have wanted to miss such a momentous occasion. Mark was able to go too since he works at home which is so great for Sam. Most dads aren’t there at the school like he is able to be. The icing on the cake for Sam was that ALL of her grandparents came too.

Sam seemed a bit overwhelmed at first, as you can see from her face. I was at the end of the aisle with Mark trying to get a good picture of her so I didn’t see it, but my mom said that while Sam was walking up she gave them a little waist-high wave.

All the kids lined up and sang. At first, Sam was a little shy about it and wasn’t really singing.

Eventually Sam joined right in and even did the motions they had been doing in school that accompany some of the songs. Her favorite that she had been singing at home is Stirring Our Brew, which goes like this:

Stirring and stirring and stirring our brew… (Pretend to stir.)

Wooooooo!  Wooooooo! (Cup hands by mouth.)

Stirring and stirring and stirring our brew… (Pretend to stir.)

Wooooooo!  Wooooooo! (Cup hands by mouth.)

Tip-toe. Tip-toe. BOO! (Pretend to tip-toe.)

Her other favorite is I’m a Nut, which goes like this:

I’m an acorn, small and round (Pretend to hold an acorn in your fingers.)

Lying on the cold, cold ground (Cross your arms on your chest and shiver.)

People always step on me. (Touch your foot to the ground on “step”)

That is why I’m cracked, you see. (Make a fist and tap your head on “cracked”)

I’m a nut. (Lightly rap your head twice as you click your tongue)

I’m a nut. (Rap your head again)

I’m a nut. I’m a nut. I’m a nut. (Rap your head again)

After the parade and the songs were over, the kids went back inside to school to start their day, as usual. I am sure it was hard to keep them all contained though! Those poor teachers! The kids came home with gift bags full of Halloween trinkets and thrilled as could be that they got to see their friends in costume. We were so proud of her today. I can’t believe I just attended my little girl’s first school “show”. Where did the time go?  It does keep marching on whether I am ready for it or not. It was certainly a treat seeing her, even if it did make me a little sad to see her growing up so fast. Now we just need to get her on to actual trick or treating!

A Fairy Princess Halloween

| October 29, 2013

Happy Halloween everyone! Yes, I know it’s not Halloween yet, and we don’t usually give anyone a sneak peek at our gorgeous girl in her costume before the big masquerade night, but we did take these photos early and it is getting hard to not share! You just never know what Halloween will be like around here. Pennsylvania can be odd that way. Last year, it snowed the day before Halloween, and this year the forecast is calling for 68 degree weather! So, a little bit ago we got a nice weekend so Mark decided to try to take some nice photos of Samantha in her costume. We wanted to do it, and her, justice. She looks so unbelievably beautiful. This is her first “big girl” costume and she looks so very grown up.

We decided to walk down the street to where the playground is. There are a lot of trees, and a stream, and it seemed the perfect setting for a fairy to be for her photo shoot. On the way down the sidewalk, Sam abruptly stopped to look at something on her costume. I thought it was a leaf, but on better examination, we all saw that it was a grasshopper! It was so perfect, it walked right up her dress to her hand, as if it knew there was an honest to goodness fairy in its midst. Samantha was so excited she could hardly move. We told her to talk to him, since fairies commune with nature and the grasshopper is probably waiting for her to say something.

Eventually, we let the little guy (or girl) go, back into the grass, so it could tell all of its grasshopper friends about his exciting day. When we got to the park, Sam felt right at home. She loves her costume so much. She kept looking down at herself and smiling. I think she never felt more beautiful. I have to agree. She is quite stunning.

She was really having the time of her life. We are lucky we got the costume off when we got home — I was starting to think she would want to keep it on forever!

“Hmmm…does this thing really work?” she seems to be wondering.

The stone bridge over the stream was a nice change of scenery. No trolls came to visit though! I think they were afraid Sam would turn them into frogs!

One last portrait, while Sam contemplates the nature around her. We love you so much, our amazing girl. I can’t believe how grown up you are. There is no doubt in your Mommy or Daddy’s minds that you will be the most stunning fairy anyone has ever seen on Halloween night.

Morning loveliness

| October 28, 2013

Mark hasn’t taken any morning photos of Sam for a while but he got the urge this past weekend and Sam was in the mood. It is hard to pass up good lighting and a cooperative child. He managed to get some really good shots on both days.

How she looks so happy and so spunky in the mornings amazes me. She certainly didn’t get that from us. Neither Mark nor I are “morning people.”

She has the most expressive face. You can just see the thoughts racing across her brain.

Mark was near the door trying to get good light and the wind came up. She is really due for a slight trim to her hair, what will be her first, but when I see it doing things like this it makes me not want to cut a millimeter. That gorgeous hair!

I could just kiss that face! How could anyone resist those little lips? Ok, boys, back off!!

She really is such a good little model. Sam hadn’t been sleeping well, but she just keeps on going and smiling.

What a perfect final shot for this post.  Bye bye!

Giving thanks

| October 28, 2013

Sam came downstairs this morning and wanted to just hang out on the couch for a while and watch TV. She asked me if she could lay under her owl blanket, which she uses all the time. She said to me, “I am never going to give my owl blanket away”. She has been saying something like that all time lately, “I am never going to give [x] away” probably because I keep telling her if she doesn’t start playing with her million toys that she never plays with, I am going to give them away to kids who have no toys. Anyway, after she said it, I said, “You love your owl blanket don’t you? You got it for Christmas last year, remember?” and she asked me if Santa brought it to her and I told her yes. Then she said the sweetest thing. She said maybe we could write a letter to Santa and tell him thank you for my owl blanket.

I always knew that Sam was a sweet, sensitive girl, a girl who truly cares about other people’s feelings, a girl who is polite, says please, says thank you. But for her to think to say thank you to Santa was more than I ever expected. I told her that would be very, very nice indeed since I don’t think Santa gets many thank yous. But he did today. And this Santa’s helper won’t forget.

Can we get through this Halloween first?

Sam told me for a long time that she wanted to be a fairy this Halloween. I kept thinking she would change her mind as the months went by, but nope. She is going to be a fairy. She has been very consistent in her idea. This consistency and single-mindedness has me wondering about next year since she has already started telling me what she wants to be for Halloween next year — a ghost.  We’ll see. I am sure she will change her tune by October 2014, but who knows, I may be eating my words. This kid has a mind like an elephant.
