We are always trying to think of something new to do with Sam to keep her amused. Sometimes, especially if the weather isn’t cooperative, or if Sam isn’t feeling well, the days can be really long. Sam is always asking Mark if she can play with his Legos, so recently Mark got it in his head to try something different with her. He set up some camera equipment and taught her about stop motion film. Here are some of the movies they made. I hope you enjoy them!
The first one is her Space Man video.
The second is Alligator Munching a Hat.
The third is Knight vs. Alligator.
Her fourth is Flipping Pancakes.
The fifth is Riding the Alligator.
Last but not least, Sam’s very own idea, Monsters vs. Peppa! She had some input into all of the ideas, but this one was definitely her very own.
Oscar award winning shorts, in my opinion!

This past weekend we had dinner for Poppy’s birthday. Mom and Joe came over for dinner and Sam helped wrap the presents. She decorated the wrapping paper on her own gift to Poppy.
Sam couldn’t wait of course until dinner was over so we could move on to her favorite part — presents!
No one ever gets to open their own presents anymore…
Here she is modeling her present for Poppy. When I asked her a few weeks ago what we should buy Poppy, her immediate response was, “How about a new golf shirt?” A perfect idea!
Now, on to the cake! Sam helped decorate it at Grandmom’s house by putting on the sprinkles. When she got to our house, she put the candles on.
Happy Birthday, Poppy! We love you!

Sam likes movies and we do let her watch a few, but not too many. I am always a bit nervous about giving her bad dreams. So far, we have been pretty selective. She has seen Cinderella, Toy Story and Toy Story II, Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University. All of which are pretty much scary villain free. She finds my Disney movie stash sometimes and had been asking me if she could watch The Rescuers. Not the most popular of Disney movies, but I loved it. If you have not seen the movie, it is a cartoon about some mice who are part of the Rescue Aid Society and their mission is to rescue a little orphan girl who had been kidnapped from her orphanage by this evil woman who needs Penny to help her find a huge diamond. I still remember seeing this movie when I was a kid and just being fascinated by it. After much cajoling on Sam’s part, I gave in and let her watch it. I did watch it with her to make sure she was ok with everything that was going on. She really liked it, I think mostly because of the little mice more than anything. The movie could be a tad frightening for a little girl Sam’s age, assuming she fully understood some of the darker elements (like the fact that the poor little girl is being held hostage by crazy treasure hunters and is an orphan) but I don’t think Sam really focused on those parts. At any rate, she has watched it quite a few times in the last week or so.
Last night after we went to bed, Mark and I could hear Sam talking. I thought she was saying something to us so I went in to check on her. She was snoozing away, so I figured she was talking in her sleep (which she has done before). A few minutes later, she was still at it so Mark went in to check on her. I didn’t hear Mark say anything to her but I did hear Sam and I swore she was saying “I have to find my fairy.” I had just cleaned up her bed and moved her fairy off into a toy bin, so I figured I’d go in and get it for her. Mark quickly shooed me away and hushed me so I left. Sam was still sleeping and he didn’t want me to wake her. When he came back to bed, she had quieted down and Mark said she kept saying, “We have to save Penny, we have to save Penny!” Now, the only Penny Mark is aware of is Penny on The Big Bang Theory so he could not for the life of him figure out what the heck she was talking about. When he told me that this is what she was saying I clued him in that Penny is the little girl in The Rescuers. We both agreed that the fact that she was dreaming about the movie was just too adorable. Hopefully, she and her little mouse friends did rescue Penny and that is why she finally stopped talking.
I asked her about it today but, just like always when it comes to her dreams, she didn’t recall a thing. At least it didn’t seem to us to be a bad dream for her, just an adventurous one. All I know is, Sam never stops talking, from the minute her little eyes open in the morning until, well…not even when she goes to sleep. 🙂

Yesterday, Sam had her first official play date. Mark and I have talked about how we should try to set something up with a girl in her class so that Sam can play one on one with someone, which is when she does the best. Sam interacts so much better, so much more openly, when she is playing with just one kid than in a group. I think she is doing better in school, but I do observe her on the playground when I come to pick her up, and she still seems a bit shy, even though I do know she talks to some of the kids.
There is a girl named Julia who lives a street over and I thought maybe she would be a good choice. There are not a lot of kids on our street that are Sam’s age, and it would be nice for her to have a friend who lives so close. I have talked to her mom a few times, briefly, at school, but never got around to actually trying to set anything up. Julia came to our house for trick or treat, so they do know where we live. Last night, before dinner, Mark and I heard someone at the door — it was Julia and her mom! They were headed for the playground and thought Sam might want to join. Of course! Sam was so excited. So I went to the playground with them and I have to say, Sam had such a great time! She and Julia ran around and did their thing while I sat on the bench chatting. Eventually, it started to get cold, and dark, so we all left but Sam kept asking me if maybe Julia could come to her house, or she could go to Julia’s. I told her of course we could try to do that. Now I just have to get on it! I was so happy to see Sam having a good time playing that I will do whatever I can to facilitate a friendship for her. It helps that Julia’s mom is very nice, thankfully, she is someone I enjoy talking to.
So, Sam had yet another first! Yay Sam!

Every once and a while, Sam gets it in her head that she wants to be a pirate. She has done this before, but ever since Halloween when Sam discovered that Maddox was a pirate for Halloween, she has been talking about it a lot. She asked Mark to make her a sword, since Maddox had a sword and he happily obliged, fashioning one out of cardboard. Sam had already made herself a telescope out of a cardboard tube and was running around peering out the hole telling us what she saw. When her sword was done, she made a pirate ship out of couch cushions and attacked our house! The red thing on the couch is a sea monster. 🙂 Here are a few cute pics.
