Sing, Sing a Song!

| December 9, 2013

Sam’s Christmas concert is in two days. Mark and I can’t wait to see her. Just about every day that Sam has school she comes home telling us they went to the church and sang songs. She has been practicing at home too, singing Jingle Bells and We Wish You A Merry Christmas at the top of her lungs. It has been so fun hearing her. I know she is getting really excited. She keeps asking us if we are coming, and asking if her grandparents are coming. She mentioned bells the other day, so I hope they all have jingle bells of some sort. That would really make her happy. One of the cutest things lately is that she keeps trying to sing The Twelve Days of Christmas. She gets confused by the end parts, but she does seem to get the beginning few days.  At least, she sort of does. She keeps singing, “My true self gave to me…..” I love it. On day five, she gets “five golden things.” Pretty close. I’d take five golden things, wouldn’t you? Only two more days, then I get so see my girl singing her heart out. I can’t wait. I am such a proud mommy, and she hasn’t even had her big moment yet. My heart just bursts with love for our girl.

It is funny, when Mark and I were house hunting so many years ago, one of the “deal breakers” was that the house had to have a fireplace. And yet, as time went by, we made a few fires in our fireplace, but not that many. I am not really sure why, when having a fire is so nice. We always enjoy it. We resorted to Duraflame logs a few times, but they don’t quite give you the same feel as a real wood fire. At any rate, recently, Mark got it in his head that we were going to have a fire. He borrowed some wood from our neighbors and set to splitting. The logs were a bit to large to burn well, so they had to be split. Sam, of course, wanted to be involved, like she likes to be involved in every project he takes on. It is really so sweet. She loves when he fixes things, or makes things. Mark always lets her help and explains things to her so she can understand. Sam feels like such a big girl when she helps her dad.

I couldn’t resist taking some pictures of them in their endeavor. Here’s Mark showing Sam how to split wood using a knife and baton. Note Sam’s saftey gear, kid safety glasses, and little work boots!

Surprisingly, Sam yielded quite a hefty chop on the wood!

Sam did a great job, and I think she really learned something. I know Mark had a great time watching her.

Here is our fire, the warm, cozy fruits of their labor.  Since this fire, we have made a few others. We have a good wood pile behind our house now, and bought some new fireplace things to help us make some roaring blazes. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I can’t wait for winter now!

We took Sam to see Santa yesterday at the mall. She had already seen him at home, of course, but we told her we had to go to the mall for the official pictures. She has been waiting and waiting to go, mostly because she wanted to wear her new Christmas dress. Ever since my mom and I found the dress at Macy’s this year, she has been wanting to wear it every day.

We took her to the mall after school, which is usually not a great time to take her anywhere since she is so tired. As soon as we mentioned the possibility of seeing Santa though, she perked right up and started bouncing around. She got all dolled up in her dress and the special shoes and purse she picked out. When she saw the shoes and purse in the store she said to me, “These would be PERFECT for seeing Santa!” with such wonder, and conviction, it was impossible to say no.

Here she is, all ready to go. I gave her a sparkly, gauzy sweater to wear on top because it was a bit chilly.

I love this pose – she looks like such a fashionista!

A quick hug for her dad, and off we went to the mall!

We were lucky that when we got there Santa was just finishing up with some other kids and there was no line. She went right up and sat on his knee. The people taking the photos needed a minute which gave Sam some extra Santa time so they had a good chat. There was an elf right next to his chair that Sam noticed and Santa told her all kinds of stories about the naughty elves he had to talk to who were messing up people’s houses! It’s a good thing we don’t have one of those sneaky elves in our house. Santa knows Sam is a good girl, so there is no need to watch over her.

Sam always likes to bring something for Santa to see (last year it was her crafts) and this year she really wanted to show him that she has jingle bells, just like he does! She had them stowed in her purse and took them right out to show him. Santa was super impressed and told her they were just like the ones he has!

Eventually, she got around to telling Santa what she wants for Christmas. We had to remind her of a few things she said she wants, like a new suitcase for Daddy’s Hot Wheels cars (our old one is terrible and breaks all time), some books, a tambourine, and some Legos.

Finally, it was picture time! You can see her jingle bells in the photo. Both Santa and Sam had a great time visiting and smiled nicely for camera. Sam can’t wait for Santa to come again – this time, on Christmas Eve with her gifts!
