Sam’s First Haircut!

| April 27, 2014

Yesterday, I took Sam for her very first haircut. It has been a long time in coming. Her hair is getting a bit unruly. The ends needed to be trimmed, and it needed to be evened out a bit. For a while, every time I would mention it, she would get upset, grab her hair, and yell, “No!!! I love my hair! I don’t want to cut it!” Eventually, I was able to show her how much would be cut, and convince her it is just a trim, that we aren’t going to chop it all off or anything! We made a big deal out of going to Mommy’s hairdresser, just like a big girl. I made us both appointments with Nikki for the same day so that she could watch me first.

Here are some “before” pics so you can see how long her hair was getting.

Sam watched me get my hair washed (but she wanted no part of that!) and thought it was funny seeing all the women with the foils in their hair. I think she thought the funniest part were the old fashioned hair dryers. She said, “Mommy, look, they have bowls on their heads!” The whole time I was getting my trim, she sat in the chair next to mine and just chatted with me and Nikki. She was so good that a customer came over and commented to me on how incredibly good Sam was and that she couldn’t believe a little girl her age sat so well just waiting. That’s my girl!

Then it was Sam’s turn! We popped her right up in the chair and she was ready to go. She needed a booster seat though! But I was happy to see the big smile. I think Sam was actually getting excited.

Nikki actually decided that Sam’s hair was so long, to do the best job of reaching it (since she doesn’t quite get much above the chair) that she would be better off letting Sam stand at first.  Sam stood very still just like we told her to so that Nikki could snip, snip, snip. Sam asked me to save the hair they cut off because she was going to miss it. 🙂 We did save some clippings, of course.

Eventually, Sam got back in the chair and finished her haircut.

My little beauty!

She got her hair dried (another thing she is finally used to), and we went on our way! I was so proud of my girl. One more new experience under her belt. Strangely, we took the “before” pictures, but never thought to take the “after” pics! But I am sure you will see a multitude of pictures soon and it will be apparent how her cut looks. It really isn’t much, just a wee bit shorter in back, and nice and straight. She looks beautiful!

Opposites

| April 24, 2014

One concept that Sam has had trouble grasping in the past is opposites. She has some books about opposites that I have read her, but she doesn’t seem to get what it is trying to show. Well, she has gotten better all of the sudden. Mark was going over opposites with her recently and she was very into the idea. She wanted me to run pairs with her, so I kept trying to come up with new ones to stump her. She has most of the standard ones down, such as these:

Up – Down

In – Out

Slow – Fast

High – Low

Here – There

Hot – Cold

And a bunch of others. But when I got to “Wet” she thought about it for a minute, and gave me the technically correct answer —

“Not Wet”

Well. Yes. But no.  I explained to her that it was cheating, and she just smiled at me. She knew. My clever little girl. 🙂

Making Music

| April 21, 2014

Well, sort of. Mark is always trying to get Sam interested in music, whether it is listening or creating. I do support it, of course, I would love for Sam to be musical, but short of playing music for her, I am not much help. I can’t read music, or play it (something I still regret) and Mark can, so I leave it to him to instill these things in her. We both hope Sam has some musical talent, like her dad. Mark does a good job trying to educate her. She listens to all sorts of music with her, tries to point out the sounds of different instruments, and tries to show her how to actually play songs by explaining notes. I don’t know how much is sinking in, but we hope.

Sam and Mark were outside recently playing with her sidewalk chalk. She just got some new chalk for Easter from our neighbors, and one of the doodads was a holder for multiple pieces of chalk. We noted that it looks like the lines you use to create music. It didn’t take long for Mark to try to educate our daughter once again. We were both so pleased to see that she does understand the concept, that all those little symbols actually mean something. Because she created – this. We were so proud. Maybe there is hope for her musical future yet.

Easter Celebrations

| April 20, 2014

Happy Easter! We had a great Easter this year and I hope these pictures show it. We had a lot of fun leading up to Easter before the day even got here. Sam was so excited about the Easter Bunny and wondering where her basket would be hidden. We decorated, we visited the Easter Bunny, and this year was our first year we decided to decorate Easter eggs with Sam.

Not surprisingly, she loved it! Coloring eggs is right up her alley. We just knew before this year it would have been such a mess. She loved the whole process of dipping the eggs and waiting for the color to come out. For her first time we went “old school” and just used standard dye in vinegar, nothing fancy.

She did a great job dipping the eggs and even mixing them in a few colors to see what would come out.

You can see how proud she was of her efforts! She picked out which ones were for Grandmom, Poppy, and Pop Pop right away and kept checking the refrigerator to make sure we didn’t eat them!

On Easter morning, she was up bright and early. She was in our bed (naturally) and I felt her pop up in the morning. The first words out of her mouth were, “Happy Easter, Mommy!” to be quickly followed by, “I wonder where the Easter Bunny hid my basket?” I told her we’d go look in a minute, but before I could even remotely wake up, she was out of bed opening closets and looking everywhere. She was pretty disappointed it wasn’t in any of our closets (she was sure EB would hide it in hers) or in any of his usual places. Finally, I had to help her out and let her know there was something in our tub that didn’t quite belong!

DSC_2583

I love this expression – it perfectly captures what she kept saying over and over all day – why would the Easter Bunny hide her basket in the tub, that’s so silly!

DSC_2588

Here’s a pic of her basket and its goodies, before it got completely torn apart. Sam got a Max and Ruby, some little bunnies, a stuffed duck (which was easily her favorite thing), some puzzles and other little toys, and of course, candy!

DSC_2581

Sam loves checking out her goodies, one by one, very carefully, so she can inspect each and every thing.

DSC_2592

And then, of course, she has to hurl all the grass into the air making a gigantic mess…

DSC_2598

But she is a cute mess. 🙂

DSC_2604

She got these cute little bunny ear barrettes and a pom pom tail in her basket too (you can’t see the tail, but she looks sweet in the whole outfit).

DSC_2605

Later that morning, Pop Pop came by with another basket of goodies for Sam. The candy never ends! Yay!

DSC_2614

We had dinner with my parents that night and took time to take a few family portraits. We all clean up pretty nicely, if I do say so myself!

It was a great day, just like always. The weather cooperated, and we spent time with family, gorged on chocolate, and relaxed. If only every day could be so nice! Happy Easter!

Happy Easter!

| April 19, 2014

Happy Easter everyone! Later, there will be plenty of pictures of Sam enjoying her basket and doing all sorts of fun Easter things, but for now, enjoy the photos of our beautiful girl in her Easter finery!

Sam held tight to this little chick the whole time.  It was hard to get a photo of her without it.

Here’s her whole outfit, from head to toe!

Our favorite place to take pictures is outside, especially when the sun hits her gorgeous hair, like it is here.

DSC_2487-2

I had been wanting a new picture of me and my girl, and I got a few beauties!

DSC_2080

Me and my best girl – I hope she is this enamored with me forever.

And we also got some fabulous pictures of Samantha with her favorite guy!

DSC_2415

Of course, they had to take time out to be silly. That’s Sam and her dad, all right…

DSC_2401

Krista brought Maddox over one day to take some pictures of the kids together. Sam, little fashionista that she is, couldn’t decide between two dresses this year, so we also bought this one. I consider it her backup Easter dress. 🙂 I love those little smiles.

Maddox is tough to take pictures of sometimes because he never wants to smile at you when you want him to, which is crazy since he is giggling all the time. A few silly things behind Mark’s back though, and he’s all smiles!
