First Train Ride!

| June 14, 2014

Sam has been chomping at the bit to ride the train, the trolley, or anything else that moves. Yesterday, Mark had a doctor’s appointment in town and since it was mid-day, and parking would be tight at the train station, I offered to drop him off at the station. Well, as soon as Sam heard that, she begged to go with him to ride the train. We figured, what the heck, why not? And quickly tried to figure out what we could do with her in Philadelphia, for just a little bit of time. We settled on walking over to Franklin Square, which I heard was great for kids.

Sam was so thrilled that we were letting her do this seemingly amazing thing! She watches the train go by all the time when we drive. She couldn’t believe she was going to get to ride one!

When it was just about time for the train to come, we went outside so Sam could see it coming down the track. It was strange for me in a way, since this is the same station I rode every day to work when I worked in the city. How I hated it! And now it seemed so much fun. Being with Sam will do that. 🙂

Once we boarded, Sam was glued to the window, watching everything zip by.

After Mark’s appointment, we walked over to Franklin Square. It was only about a 15 minute walk, but it was hot, and Sam didn’t feel like walking. She needed an incentive so we kept telling her that it was a fun place for kids, but didn’t tell her what was there. We didn’t tell Sam about the carousel, the highlight of the place, so when she saw it she couldn’t believe it! The idea is that we would all ride once, but I wound up buying a ton more tickets. There were three animals she desperately wanted to ride, and I couldn’t say no.

After we were done with the rides, we took Sam over to the playground. My big girl! What was going to be a fairly mundane day turned out to be great. We all had so much fun. Family days without a lot of chores or other nonsense are hard to come by. I’m glad we grabbed this day while we could.
