Ocean City, NJ

| August 31, 2014

This year, we were lucky enough to be able to steal a few extra days at the beach. Since Krista and Adam spent a few days at our beach house, we were able to crash at theirs in Ocean City. We couldn’t wait! Well, all of us except Zephyr. She was trying to stow away in our luggage!

I left work as early as I could on Wednesday and we arrived at the shore around dinnertime. After a quick bite of Mack and Manco pizza (yeah, it’s Manco and Manco now, but whatever, it’ll always be Mack and Manco to us) we headed for a walk to the boardwalk.

DSC01032

It was too late to do a lot, but we thought the kiddos might enjoy the arcade, so that was our first stop. Mark and Sam had a game of air hockey and I was impressed. She was a decent opponent!

DSC01034

After leaving the arcade, we walked a bit more and Sam was ready to burst when she saw Anna and Elsa of Frozen fame!

DSC01035

Baby Ryder wasn’t too impressed, so Pop Pop hung out while we all had fun.

The next morning, it was time to hit the beach early. It was a beautiful day and we had the best time. Sam loved the odd tidal pool that formed. It ran for blocks and blocks parallel to the beach and was sort of like a lake in the sand. You can see the waves and the ocean on the left side of the photo, where the lifeguard’s boat is.  In this picture, the waves were coming up at high tide to meet the tidal pool, but on most of the beach there was a huge expanse of sand there.

You can see, she is having fun in her own little pool.

That night, we headed to the boardwalk for real. That is the one major benefit of staying in Ocean City – instant boardwalk access. The rides were the first order of business. We rode the train then Sam and Maddox got Krista and I on the balloon ride. With the two of them wildly spinning the seat, Krista and I were seasick!

Krista took the kids on the bears, but I stayed behind. As Krista so aptly put it, “Oh, great, more spinning.” 🙂

We had to ride the carousel because it is always one of Sam’s favorites.

Last day at the beach, and we were determined to get every bit of fun out of it. Sam had no problem having fun! We were back at the tidal pool and Sam made a cute castle with a bridge for her boat to sail up to. She worked so hard on all the details.

Strangely, Sam found a ladybug on the beach. It crawled right on her toe!

After Sam was done in the water, we plopped her into the lifeguard boat for a photo op. Picking up the oar was her idea and she looks great! Later, Maddox got in too.

…and it was time to bury Mark! The kids had a blast burying him from head to toe. Ok, well, neck to toe!

Last night, and one more chance at the boardwalk. We rode some rides, and then, what turned out to be Sam’s favorite thing of all, what she called, “The Spooky House”. It was very tame, but Sam thought it was wonderful. We went in twice and the second time, Mark told Sam to scare all the monsters. Each time one popped out, she’d yell BOO!

Did you think we would forget the Ferris Wheel? Not a chance. I don’t think I have ever gone to the boardwalk and not rode the Ferris Wheel. Mark and I are so glad Samantha loves it like we do.

It gets super cold up there, especially at night, and we left our jackets in the car. Mark happily obliged and kept Sam as toasty as he could.

Back to reality, back to work, back to home. It was fun, Summer, but we’re moving on to Fall. See you next year!

BFF

| August 25, 2014

Sam’s BFF, Julia, came over to play today and I couldn’t resist snapping a picture of the two silly girls. They were in the midst of dress up and stopped to record some videos on Sam’s tablet. Such cuties! Sam just loves her best friend. I hope they stay that way for a long time. 🙂

SAP Picnic

| August 24, 2014

Yesterday was the annual SAP summer picnic. We look forward to it every year, especially Sam, but this year wasn’t quite the same. The pouring rain that kept coming and coming and coming and coming had a little something to do with it. It was just a horrible day, weather-wise. The rain was supposed to end early in the day, or at the least, we were to have a few showers, but it just came down in buckets the entire day. It NEVER STOPPED. But on we went to the picnic, raincoats and umbrellas in hand. Sam had a good time anyway, despite the rain. It takes an awful lot to get my girl down. Ironically, it was a Hawaiian luau theme, and it could not have been less like sunny Hawaii unless it snowed.

Sam wore her best summer attire, popped on a lei, and quickly got a balloon flower. Instant smile!

DSC01006

We hung out as long as we could, played some games so Sam could get her stuffed animals, ate, and even went on some crazy spinning ride that Sam wanted to ride. Yup, in the rain. We got just a little bit wet. After that though, we decided it was time to bail. Sam had as many goodies as she could hold (a couple of plush fish, some leis, a balloon flower bracelet and her grass skirt) and on the way out Mark took this picture of her in front of a huge SAP balloon. She looks happy, don’t you think? As always, SAP gave us a good time, free of charge. So thanks, SAP!

I’ll always lift you up, Sam

| August 23, 2014

Sam seems to think that sitting on my shoulders is the greatest, most fun thing ever. I let her do it once and carried her around the room for a few minutes, and now she is obsessed with it. Frankly, even at 35 pounds or so, she doesn’t feel that heavy on my shoulders, it just worries me because she is such a goofball that with all her goofing around, she will fall off. Over 5 feet would be a fall I wouldn’t want her to take. She does love the view from up high though, and I can see why. It must be quite different from her usual take on the world. I mentioned to her one time that I would have Mark take our picture and she loved the idea. On the first day we were both dressed and ready, off we went outside for the photo.

I do like these photos. She looks so happy with her new vantage point, but I think the real reason she is so happy is that I let her do this silly thing she so wants to do. I love them too, not only because I love seeing Sam’s smile – that smile that lights up the world, but also because to me, they are symbolic. I will always lift you up, Sam. At least, I will try. I will TRY. I want you to feel like you can take on the world and your mom will always be there to support you, in whatever way you need her to. I will be right there – holding you, lifting you, helping you to achieve anything you want to – if it is in my power. I am so proud to be your mom. I tell you almost every night when we are in your bed, how I am the luckiest mom in the world and how being your mom is the greatest job ever. I mean it. You make every day GREAT. Even the bad days. The ones where you make me want to scream. And I probably do. Even when you don’t listen, and are bossy, and whiny and well, 4. I love you so much.

Happy 16th Birthday, Zephyr

| August 22, 2014

We celebrated Zephyr’s birthday this year the same as every year that she has been a part of our lives – with her favorite angel food cake. The celebrations were always important to Mark and I, but now that we have Sam, they have become true parties. Sam usually makes Zephyr decorations, is frantic to ensure that there are presents, and she showers Zephyr with attention all day long because it is her special day.

This year was no different. Sam couldn’t wait for the party to start. She put all the candles on Zephyr’s cake and happily sang to her. She said she would blow out Zephyr’s candles for her.

I offered to help since there were a lot!

DSC_5484

As always, Zephyr happily munched down on her favorite cake.

After the cake, it was on to presents! Sam picked this our for Zephyr months ago at Petsmart. She couldn’t wait to give it to her best little cat.

DSC_5494

This year’s celebration was an odd one for me. Zephyr is 16 now, and it is always in the back of my mind that I don’t know how many more celebrations we will have with our sweet little cat. She is such an important part of our family. Mark and I will always be grateful to her for making us a family. And even though we had Muffin for a while after Sam was born, Zephyr is really the first cat she remembers having as a pet, and so, she is extra special. Sam loves her little pal as much as we do.

Here are some pics of our beautiful cat. We love you, Zephyr. Happy Birthday!
