Moving on up (and down)

| August 22, 2014

Today Sam mastered something she has always been deathly afraid to do – she stepped onto an escalator by herself, without being asked to be held. Escalators always frighten her, but I made her try to step on, going up, and she did it. I held her hand and on she went! We were in Macy’s and I just didn’t have it in me to carry her, again, when it is something she needs to learn to do. When we finished with our purchases (on the third floor, and we had to go back down to the first floor to meet Mark), she had to try going down. I offered to carry her, and she quickly took me up on it since going down looks much scarier than going up. She was so proud of herself though for what she did. She sort of leaped onto the step instead of walking on, but that’s ok. Whatever works for her right now. After meeting Mark we went to Target, and there, she decided she was brave enough to try down. She did great! In fact, she did so well, that when we left Target and went back into the mall (and had to go up again to where we parked) she asked if she could go on the escalator again. I think I may have to hit the mall sooner rather than later. She wants to practice, and who am I to put a damper on her excitement. She accomplished something big, for her, and I am very proud. And…ya know, I am not one to pass up a trip to the mall! All for Sam’s sake of course…

It’s Snowing!

| August 21, 2014

The other day, Mark ordered a bunch of stuff and it came packed in what seemed like a million of those packing peanuts that no one seems to use anymore. Well, Sam got into them and why, we must have lost our minds, we decided to let her just dump them all out and play. She had a great time, laughing, throwing them up in the air, and saying over and over, “It’s snowing!” She made snow angels and even piled a bunch up then sat in a box to “sled” down the hill. This is the resulting mess. But, hey, she had a good time. 🙂

The driveway artist strikes again!

| August 20, 2014

The driveway artist is back! This time, with a picture of me and her holding lollipops, and holding hands. I just love being the subject of her creations, even if she keeps drawing me without hair….

Who Needs Linvilla’s Pumpkinland?

| August 14, 2014

Well, ok, we will come October, but still. Sam has been so excited about our garden, going out almost every day and picking vegetables. It is like it’s her own personal mission to make sure we pick our veggies when they are ripe before the critters in our yard munch them up! A few tomatoes got half eaten (those darn squirrels!) but otherwise, we have had a lot of luck. Sam has been anxiously awaiting the ripening of her pumpkins. Only a few started to grow, but they were looking good. One finally got orange, and I was really afraid that something would happen to it, or the plant, before Sam got to pick it, so we decided to let her have it now, rather than waiting it out as long as we could until fall. Sam couldn’t wait to get out there and pick her first pumpkin, grown in her own backyard!

She tried so hard to pull it off the vine, but I finally helped her before she yanked the whole plant out of the dirt.

And here it is! Our first pumpkin! Congratulations, Farmer Sam, you did a great job!

My Busy Bee

| August 10, 2014

A new place called Busy Bees opened up near us and when I figured out what it was, I just had to take my crafty little girl. Among other things, you can paint your own bisque pieces and they fire them, then a few days later, ta da! You have your piece. Sam loved the idea once I showed her what I was going to let her do. I think she had a great time. She works so intently on her projects. I did help her, but only a tiny bit, when she needed assistance getting edges just right, or at the end, when I made sure she had enough paint on to truly cover the statues.

Here are her finished creations! Beautiful! I am so proud of her and what she accomplished. She can’t wait to go back, and neither can I. Next up, gifts, gifts, gifts! Who knows, one of you may be the recipient of one of her masterpieces!
