Happy 16th Birthday, Zephyr

| August 22, 2014

We celebrated Zephyr’s birthday this year the same as every year that she has been a part of our lives – with her favorite angel food cake. The celebrations were always important to Mark and I, but now that we have Sam, they have become true parties. Sam usually makes Zephyr decorations, is frantic to ensure that there are presents, and she showers Zephyr with attention all day long because it is her special day.

This year was no different. Sam couldn’t wait for the party to start. She put all the candles on Zephyr’s cake and happily sang to her. She said she would blow out Zephyr’s candles for her.

I offered to help since there were a lot!

As always, Zephyr happily munched down on her favorite cake.

After the cake, it was on to presents! Sam picked this our for Zephyr months ago at Petsmart. She couldn’t wait to give it to her best little cat.

This year’s celebration was an odd one for me. Zephyr is 16 now, and it is always in the back of my mind that I don’t know how many more celebrations we will have with our sweet little cat. She is such an important part of our family. Mark and I will always be grateful to her for making us a family. And even though we had Muffin for a while after Sam was born, Zephyr is really the first cat she remembers having as a pet, and so, she is extra special. Sam loves her little pal as much as we do.

Here are some pics of our beautiful cat. We love you, Zephyr. Happy Birthday!

Moving on up (and down)

| August 22, 2014

Today Sam mastered something she has always been deathly afraid to do – she stepped onto an escalator by herself, without being asked to be held. Escalators always frighten her, but I made her try to step on, going up, and she did it. I held her hand and on she went! We were in Macy’s and I just didn’t have it in me to carry her, again, when it is something she needs to learn to do. When we finished with our purchases (on the third floor, and we had to go back down to the first floor to meet Mark), she had to try going down. I offered to carry her, and she quickly took me up on it since going down looks much scarier than going up. She was so proud of herself though for what she did. She sort of leaped onto the step instead of walking on, but that’s ok. Whatever works for her right now. After meeting Mark we went to Target, and there, she decided she was brave enough to try down. She did great! In fact, she did so well, that when we left Target and went back into the mall (and had to go up again to where we parked) she asked if she could go on the escalator again. I think I may have to hit the mall sooner rather than later. She wants to practice, and who am I to put a damper on her excitement. She accomplished something big, for her, and I am very proud. And…ya know, I am not one to pass up a trip to the mall! All for Sam’s sake of course…
