Poppy’s Birthday

| November 15, 2014

Last night we celebrated Poppy’s birthday.  Just an easy night of steak sandwiches, cake and presents. It is so funny – the cake was solely for Sam’s benefit since her Poppy would never eat dessert, not even his own birthday cake, immediately after dinner. But for Sam, a birthday party isn’t a birthday party without cake. She helped pick it out at the store and of course, blew out the candles. It was so funny before dinner. Sam added some candy letters to the cake and then wanted to put on the candles. I asked her how many to put on and she thought about it and said, “Hmmm..maybe just one because Poppy is old and he doesn’t have so much breath.” Nice, Sam. Nice.

Crazy comments aside, Sam’s Poppy loves her to pieces.

He got other gifts, of course, but the best ones were from Sam. She made him this bowl at Busy Bees so that he can put all the little things he collects in it. When she was making it, I asked her what color Poppy likes and she said, in a very exasperated voice, “BLACK. Poppy likes black…” So funny that we all know that is his color of choice, even Sam! She did add some nice pops of color to the inside.

Sam was so proud of what she made, and she should be. Frankly, she did an amazing job!

That morning, when I was talking about the birthday dinner and the presents, Sam said, “But I can’t give Poppy just one thing!”  So, she quickly drew him a picture of the two of them and we wrapped it up. Mission accomplished!

Poppy’s last little gift was a lottery ticket in his card. Sam helped him scratch it off. She won $5.00 on the one I gave her but alas, Poppy won nothing. Sam kept saying, “Poor Poppy. He didn’t win.” She was very upset about it, but not enough to share her winnings!

Happy Birthday, Poppy! Sam is very lucky to have you in her life. Every little girl should know what it is like to have her Grandpop think she is the bee’s knees, just like I did. You mean the world to her, and to us.

Spelling Bee, Here She Comes!

| November 13, 2014

Ok, maybe not quite yet. But Sam is starting to learn to spell! I am so proud of her.  Insanely proud! I love reading, and have a fairly extensive vocabulary, so it is a big deal for me for Sam to learn to read. We read so many books together, she has so many books, but it is the one thing I never have a problem with, buying or reading books. I still remember when I was a kid, like every kid, asking for a toy or something in every store. The one thing my mom would always let me have was a book. I think it’s not a bad rule.

Lately, when we read books or Sam just sees words, she will ask me, “Mommy, does this spell anything?” and she will read me the letters. She definitely has started to have an interest in what letters mean. We have been practicing letter sounds a lot, and I know they have been focusing on them in school, and I think it’s sinking in.  She recently became enamored of the word “Stop” and now reads it out on every stop sign. She has written it out a few times and definitely knows how to write the word without seeing it in front of her. She also knows “Map” although I am not sure where that one came from. But most excitingly, she finally sounded out her first word, “Bed.” I have been trying so hard to get her to sound out a basic, three letter word and she hadn’t quite mastered how to blend the three, distinct sounds into one word that makes sense, until now. Bed!  Yay!

I am so proud of her. She has a desire to read now, and nothing could make me happier, educationally, that is. She has certain books she knows by heart and “reads” them to me at night during our book time. It amazes me that she actually knows these books so well, almost word for word in many cases. I guess all that reading at night is paying off. I hope so. Books are magical to me, a true escape, and I don’t know where I’d be without a good book to lose myself into at times. I am so happy I can share that joy with my girl.

Random Sam Cuteness

| November 8, 2014

Here are a bunch of photos of random Sam cuteness!

This first batch is just a lazy morning when Sam decided to wrap up for me one of her custom made, “just because” presents. It was a gorgeous pipe cleaner bracelet. Hand crafted and perfect for any outfit!

She was feeling in the mood to pose for photos for a change (she has been more difficult lately mostly because she never stays still) so Mark grabbed the opportunity and snapped away.

Later that day, we needed to clean up the yard a bit and Sam couldn’t wait to get involved – not helping…just diving in piles of leaves!

Stirring and Stirring Her Brew…

Stirring and stirring and stirring our brew, Ooo ooo, ooo ooo

Tip toe, tip toe, tip toe, BOO!

Happy Halloween! (That’s Sam’s favorite Halloween song they sing at school, by the way).

On Halloween Sam’s school had their annual parade. Last year the weather was so horrible that the kids had to parade inside the church, but this year, although a bit chilly, was as sunny as could be. Our little witch marched along happily with her friends dressed in their trick or treat finest (with about 10 Elsa’s from Frozen…). Is that the cutest witch you’ve ever seen?

After school, we went to Grandmom and Poppy’s house so they could see her costume.

Poppy stole Sam’s hat and Grandmom stole her spider’s hat for the photo, but Sam and spider didn’t mind.

Right before trick or treat time, we went out for some photos. Pop Pop came over to celebrate with us and to help give out candy so Mark and I could walk with Sam together this year.

Sam insisted that our whole family dress up. She wanted us all to be witches but I explained that boy witches are wizards, so she let Daddy get away with a wizard costume instead.

Sam must have asked Mark a million times if she could have his magic wand after Halloween!

We thought Sam would enjoy trick or treating with her friend Julia this year so Julia came to our house so we could get going. I mean, Belle, came to our house, not Julia. What was I thinking?

DSC_6937

They happily trekked up and down the street, going way farther than we ever have before. We walked for blocks to every house with a light on. The kids were exhausted by the time we were done. I think we walked for about 2 hours. Sam was beat and was happy to finally go home to look at her loot. She wanted to give out candy at our house. She loves doing that almost as much as trick or treating. Actually, she asked me if next year if Daddy and I could go out and get candy for her and she would stay home and give out our candy to the kids who came to our door. Um…no. All in all – a great Halloween! Lots of good candy, an adorable costume, and a sunny day for a parade. On to next year! What will Sam be?…..
