Building with Pop Pop

| December 23, 2014

I needed a bit of “me” time, so Mark took Sam over to his dad’s house yesterday so she could spend some time with her Pop Pop. Rich just got a new table saw and couldn’t wait to show it off to Mark. Knowing Sam would be bored bored bored without a project, Mark asked his dad if he would mind making something with Sam, with the saw, so that they could kill two birds with one stone. Of course he didn’t mind! Mark printed out some simple gingerbread family templates and they went off to cut them out. Originally, Mark cut out a gingerbread man and woman, and I told him, knowing Sam, she would want an entire family, so we quickly printed a small gingerbread girl and a cat, of course.

Sam is pretty good about wearing all her safety gear, eye and ear protection, as well as work boots, and she got all ready to go. Pop Pop explained how his new saw worked and Sam watched intently.

She wanted to help, but how much help she was is up for debate…

Rich has been working on making a rocking horse for the kids to play with and Sam loved it! I heard all about when they got home.

Rich’s little apprentice, on a break.

Here is the finished gingerbread Myers family! Sam made sure to show them all holding hands for the picture. 🙂 I love how she likes tools and making things as well as princesses and unicorns. I want her to know how to do useful things, to be able to take care of herself, and with Mark as her dad, and Rich as her Pop Pop, she is well on her way to being quite the handy little girl.

Cookies, Cookies, Cookies!

| December 21, 2014

It’s Christmas so it’s cookie baking time! Sam was a big help this year. She is getting to be a real pro. She has had lots of practice during the year with me and her Grandmom. Here we are, baking away. Chocolate chip, Sam’s favorite. They were delicious!

House Building

| December 20, 2014

As she does every year, Sam wanted to make a gingerbread house this year. I bought molds a long time ago with the intention of starting from scratch instead of buying a Wilton kit. Well….best intentions and all.  Yeah, that didn’t happen. In fact, I got even more lazy this year and bought a non-Wilton house that came preassembled! (Yay, Target!) Maybe next year I’ll get more adventurous.

At any rate, prefabricated or not, Sam was very excited to start decorating. I bought her a bunch of extra little doodads to use since what comes in the kits is a little boring, and she got working.

DSC_7711

She did her own thing, didn’t follow the box at all, which is fine, but it was such a switch from last year and other years when she wanted everything to look perfectly like the picture.

DSC_7715

This year, she did the whole thing by herself. I put on exactly 2 lights. The rest she did on her own. She wouldn’t even let me help her with the frosting except to get the one tube started a bit. She is getting so big now that she doesn’t really need any help. I wanted to help, I mean, geez, decorating a gingerbread house is fun, but, well, it was hers, so I let her do whatever she wanted.

DSC_7717

DSC_7719

She wanted to paint in the windows so Mark tinted some frosting for her and gave her a paintbrush. She did a great job!

DSC_7724

DSC_7726

Her imagination is so vast. The stories she was telling me about what she was doing were great. The little gingerbread people were her absolute favorite. She kept making them talk the whole time about their house, and where was their furniture and whatnot. Her most favorite was the baby gingerbread, complete with diaper. You can see it in the bottom left corner. The family also has a gingerbread cat and dog.

She let her dad help a bit, but only to give her some ideas, not to actually do anything!

Almost done!

DSC_7745

Here is her finished product, from all sides. The Christmas tree on the window is like seeing their tree in the house, all decorated.

DSC_7747

The two yellow lights were my big contribution. All the rest is Sam. Mark had her write her name on the house so everyone knew it was her creation.

DSC_7749

They tried writing her name in frosting and putting sprinkles on it, but it was too hard to read. You can see it on the bottom of the roof. The little balls are “presents falling down the chimney.” The two blue lights on the house are a clock. She made the reindeer Rudolph, as you can see, by adding a red nose.

DSC_7750

The elves are ready to go home in the sleigh. The big bunch of gumballs are grapes. Grapes on the roof? Yup. That’s what she said.

DSC_7751

The green light on the floor with a face is “Super Light”. You can see he has a drawn on black cape behind him. He is there to save the day from the monster who is trying to steal Christmas (you will see him shortly on the other side). He is quite the villain, as you can see, he knocked out the poor little guy on the bottom right.

DSC_7755

Eek! The monster who tried to steal Christmas! Do you see him? It’s the evil looking blue guy with red eyes! Save us, Super Light, save us!

DSC_7758

Another gingerbread house done for Christmas. It was so much fun this year, listening to Sam, watching her mind work. Next year, she told me she wants to build a gingerbread train, like her cousins, Owen and Ethan. Oh boy. Who knows what crazy adventure that train will go on, if this year’s story is any indication of what is to come!

Old Fashioned Christmas

| December 19, 2014

Sam has been asking me and asking me if we can string popcorn for the Christmas tree. Now that is something I haven’t done in years! Wow. I don’t think I’ve actually made a popcorn garland since I was a little kid. She has a book, If You Take a Mouse to the Movies and the book begins with the mouse wanting to make a popcorn string, which is where Sam first got the idea. I told her we could make one and bought the popcorn and dragged our old air popper out of the attic. My mom gave me the one we had when we were kids a long time ago and it has spent pretty much the entire time I’ve had it in my attic. I was a little worried the old popper wouldn’t work since I haven’t used it since, well….forever, but it worked like a charm! Boy, they don’t make things like they used to. I defy you to buy any small appliance today that will still work perfectly 30 odd years later! Those were the days, before microwave popcorn conquered the world.

Sam stood on a chair to wait for the popcorn to pop, having absolutely no idea what was going to happen.

DSC01408-2

When the popcorn started to come up and pour out of the bowl she was so excited! I remember when my brother and I were kids having to sometimes lay a kitchen towel over the plastic chute because the popcorn would come flying out like crazy. It wasn’t too bad last night, but about a dozen pieces flew into the air. Sam thought that was hysterical. Flying popcorn!

DSC01410

I set her up with a big needle and some dental floss and she got to threading. She stuck herself a few times in the beginning, but quickly got the hang of it. She worked so hard. You can see how seriously she is concentrating.

DSC01414

The string got longer and longer, and I had to help a bit. Her little fingers got tired! Sam did great though, she only broke a few pieces and managed to get almost every one she tried on the string.

At last! Long enough for the tree. Well, one strand anyway, but that’s all Sam really wanted.

DSC01415

DSC01416

Sam couldn’t run into our tree fast enough to hang it up. It looks pretty great, very festive, and very old fashioned. Like Christmas should be. Having a kid running around your house at the holidays really makes you remember what it was like to be little. I would never in a million years have thought to string popcorn, but Sam reminded me how fun it can be. Such a simple task. Thanks, Sam, for reminding your old mom how to be a kid again. 🙂

Our Little Christmas Angel

| December 17, 2014

Today was Sam’s last preschool Christmas program. She was so excited about it this year because, since she is a big 5 day student, she gets to be part of the nativity scene performed at the end. They picked their parts out of a hat and a few days later she told me she was going to be an angel. The perfect part for my little one, for sure! For about a minute she was disappointed that she was not Mary (I think every girl in her class wanted to be Mary), but when my mom asked her what part her friend Ava had (a sheep), my mom assured Sam that she had a very good part indeed!

Here she is walking in to the church. They tried their costumes on only recently, and now she really wants me to make her an angel outfit, complete with halo and wings.

DSC_7638

Here are Sam and her friend Ava. It is nice that they got to stand next to each other, but I think Sam talked Ava’s ear off the whole time, except for when they were singing.

DSC_7645

Here is a good portion of her class. It was so great they lined up this way because all of Sam’s little friends are right on this side. Nicholas, Mary Cate, Ashlee, Madelyn, Ava, Sam, Erin, Kaylee, and Michael. There are others in her class, obviously, but this group contains pretty much all her friends.

DSC_7652

When they sing Jingle Bells they all ring bells. It is so adorable. They are remarkably “together” with the ringing.

DSC_7654

After everyone was lined up (the 3 day kids are in the front, where Sam was last year), the concert started. Sam really sang every song this year but she still didn’t do most of the hand motions. I think it was more fun for her this year since it was the same songs as last year and she knew them a lot better.

DSC_7663

On to the nativity! Sam was happy she got to stand right next to Mary. I assured her that was a place of honor!

DSC_7674-2

Sam did do a lot of the hand motions during the song portion of the nativity scene, making stars fall from the sky, rocking the baby Jesus (who Sam still calls Baby Genius…). It was so adorable to see. I was very proud of my angel.

DSC01406-2

When the show ended, a very special visitor showed up. Last year, Sam didn’t want to stick around to see him (she told me the other day that it was because he was giving out lollipops and it wasn’t a kind she liked). This year though, she made it clear she wanted to see Santa! Off we went and she happily plopped on his lap.

DSC_7688

Our last preschool Christmas program. I will miss seeing the little ones perform, but there’s always whatever she does in Kindergarten. I can’t wait!
