Hippity Hop

| March 16, 2015

We finally got a break in the weather and grabbed the opportunity to take Sam outside to play for a while. It has been so long since we got out to enjoy the fresh air, unless, of course, you count the lung freezing air we had this winter while playing in the snow. Sam decided to play on her hippity hop. I love these pictures of her cruising down the driveway, hair all free and wild.

After reaching the end of the driveway, she was off down the sidewalk to chase after me.

Sam decided to abandon the hippity hop because she couldn’t go fast enough to catch me. She started running like a maniac. She always gets this excited, determined look on her face like, “I’m gonna get you!!”

She eventually caught up to me then I quickly turned the tables and chased her, which I think she liked even more.

On to playing catch. She has a good throw and catches very well.

When she tries to throw really hard or far, she leaps off the ground. She kept trying to throw the ball over my head. Mark managed to catch some pictures of her in midair.

We had such a good time as you can see from the smile on her cute little face. Come on, spring! Get here already so we can continue the good times!

Hello, Mr. Easter Bunny

| March 14, 2015

We took Samantha to see the Easter Bunny today. I wasn’t sure if we would this year because she hasn’t really seemed like she wanted to. Actually, a few times recently, she has asked me if the Easter Bunny at the mall is “real”. I assume she means the real Easter Bunny. I always ask her, “Well, what do you think?” and after pondering for a minute, she shakes her head no. I told her that she is probably right. She always wonders why the Easter Bunny doesn’t talk and I tell her that bunnies don’t talk. Maybe it’s because the bunny at the mall is so big and bunnies are so small that she has doubts, I am not sure. But, regardless, I assured her that the Easter Bunny is real, just maybe he’s not the guy at the mall taking pictures.

Sam wanted to wear last year’s Easter dress and we thought, well, why not? Here they are!

Hark, it’s a hawk!

| March 9, 2015

We had a visitor today! Sam and I had just come home from school and I noticed this beautiful guy (or girl) sitting in our backyard. We had the best time watching him, especially Samantha. She kept trying to creep up on it and each time she approached, the hawk would spin its head around 180 degrees to look at her as if to say, “I’m watching you!”

Here is a super zoomed in image when it was seemingly showing off its feathers for us. Amazing!

Serenity

| March 8, 2015

Yesterday we went to Tyler Arboretum, a favorite place for our family. Mark wanted to see what it was like in the snow, and thought that Sam would enjoy exploration of nature in such a new way. I was really tired and wasn’t going to go, but Sam asked me to and drew me this adorable picture of the two of us hiking to show me that I truly was invited on her trip with Daddy.

DSC01754

When we got there, we didn’t see pretty much anyone except a lone cross country skier. He advised us to stay to the paths as much as possible since there was a lot of ice and snow out there, but he did note that we were dressed very appropriately for our hike, complete with hiking sticks. The only part of the arboretum that was cleared was the paved path, which is to be expected. It was fairly walkable, but we did hit a few large patches of ice that made it better to walk on the snow.

We stopped for a minute to rest on a nice bench. Sam loved it because it was all purple, just like her.

DSC01667

Early on, Mark decided he really wanted to visit the meadow, one of our favorite places. That of course meant hiking across a field through the snow. We found quite a few sets of deer and other animal tracks and Sam set to exploring.

DSC01671

After a way through the snow (Sam didn’t complain at all, I must say) we made it to the meadow. We didn’t see anyone the whole time we were in the arboretum except a few more people on cross country skis. It was so incredibly peaceful, and quiet. Except for Sam. No quiet there. But she had a blast playing in all the vast, pristine snow.

It was such a great place to take pictures that we couldn’t resist a few.

I love this one. Sam learned how to make a heart with her hand and she does it all the time now.

After resting on yet another bench for a while, Mark took out his binoculars to see if he could see any wildlife. He noticed a deer stand that we hadn’t seen before so he and Sam set off across the meadow to see it. I actually took this picture of them from a really far way away, by holding the camera up to the binoculars. Not bad! Mark went up first and Sam climbed right up after him.

DSC01722

They hung out for a while looking around from on high, then headed back.

DSC01727

We took the snowy route back and avoided the paved path because we thought it might be more interesting, and we came upon such a pretty spot, I just needed to stop and take it all in. And of course take pics of my wonderful family.

We almost made it back to the end and Sam made this tiny little snowball. She desperately wanted a picture of it.

DSC01735

We had such a great time. It was totally worth the cold and the snow and the exhaustion. Beautiful! Why we never did that before, I have no idea, but I am sure next winter, we’ll be doing it again.

Monkey See, Monkey Do (a drawing, that is)

| March 7, 2015

I love seeing what Sam is going to create next, but her artwork is so up and down, depending on her mood and the extent of her tiredness. Sometimes she draws or creates the most amazing things and other times, you can barely decipher the scribbles. Today was one of those days when she blew me away. On one of her sketchbooks, there were instructions on how to draw a monkey, step by step. This was what Sam came up with. I was very impressed! I love that she is artistic and seems to love to create things. Maybe she will make a career of it someday, who knows….
