Strawberry! Not that she’ll eat it….

| May 24, 2016

Last year, we planted a strawberry plant and it never really gave us anything. Sam wanted me to try again this year and I was reluctant, but I figured, why not? This particular plant yielded a berry pretty fast and Sam couldn’t wait to pick it.

Not that she would eat it or anything, God forbid, but she liked picking it. One of these days, little Miss Picky is going to eat something she picks from our garden! Sam is still horribly picky. Getting her to eat is a nightmare every day. The number of foods she eats is so small. Most of the time, we are at our wits end and keep hoping she will get better with time. I try not to let it bother me as much as I used to since it gets me nowhere, but I do get frustrated with her. She has been slightly more willing to try things. Slightly. But any improvement is something and I will take it!

Zachy Lion

| May 20, 2016

The cats are an endless source of amusement for Sam. Penny is her little lovebug, but she does love Zach and all his antics too. He is our little adventure boy. The cats both still have their claws and Zach really likes using them to climb trees. He is our little mountain lion! No fear, up he goes! Sam cracks up wondering how we are going to get him down. She told me if he goes to high we are going to have to call the fire department! Where she hears these things, I have no idea. Thankfully, the little guy comes down all by himself. If he won’t, we may have to send Sam up to get him!

Secret Hiking Spot (and a new friend)

| May 15, 2016

The first graders at her school recently went on a hike as their field trip. The pictures that her friend, Julia’s, mom posted made me very curious about where they were. It turned out to be a wooded park right here in Springfield that Mark and I had been wondering about for years! We always knew it was there, but could never figure out how to get in. All of the borders of the park seem to be against local roads and you would have to climb down massive hills to get in. I asked Julia’s mom, Mina, and she told me they entered from behind the school. Well, Mark and I needed a new place to explore so we set off to find our way into the park! Mark drove around to the area where we can actually see the park and we went from there, going into some residential areas and hoping to find an entrance point. He has found a lot of “hidden” playgrounds that way while biking around so he thought maybe we’d find the park that way too. Sam had her own plan which she wrote out in the car: “Plan. Go look. You’re there.”

After a very short time looking (thank God I was not driving because I would have been completely lost even though we were about 1 minute from the major Springfield roads), Mark found an entrance, right in the middle of a street, between houses. Off we went! It turned out to be beautiful! Quiet, peaceful, and with enough fun things for Sam to explore to keep it interesting. We stopped to take a nice photo in the woods. Sam and Mark have matching hats. We wanted her to wear a hat and she insisted on wearing one of Mark’s hats instead of her own. She loves when they match in any way shape or form.

Sam offered to take one of us too.

DSC04237

We couldn’t believe this beautiful place was here all this time. There was even a stream or creek or something that we could cross. Sam’s a typical kid – she loves to tromp through the water!

She found this huge leaf and carried it the whole time.

After walking a while, we started to see rooftops and figured it must be the school, so we went to see where we wound up. It turns out, we came out at the ET Richardson school, the middle school right next door to Sam’s school. There is an entrance there, and you can follow a paved path the entire way behind the school and come out at Sam’s kindergarten. Who knew? We came out where the first grade playground is, something I have never been able to find! Sam had a great time playing and having the whole thing to herself. She saw it out the window when she was at Science Club this year.

The area for the first graders, and the equipment, is much bigger than the kindergarten area. But really, it’s perfectly sized for her. She has grown so much.

We walked around the playground to find the front of the school and saw a groundhog run by from a distance. Right after that, Sam asked us if she could run on the A-B-C walk. We said it was ok but then quickly had to stop her. A baby groundhog was using it! I guess that is why Mama Groundhog was out. Sam was beyond excited. It made her whole day. She managed to get pretty close without the baby running. We made Sam stop though before getting too close.

DSC04248

How cute is this little thing? We saw its brother or sister over by the wall too. So adorable. Sam wants to take the photos to school. We assured her she’d be the most popular kid in class the next time she was at school!

DSC04250

After leaving the groundhog, we explored the outdoor classroom, as they call it, and started back toward the car. We still had a way to go back through the woods. She’s still got that leaf!

DSC04257

Sam had a giant stick she started using as a walking stick. She had to stop to show us how she could balance it on her head. Not bad!

DSC04264

It was really a great day. We always love being outdoors and exploring as a family, and now we found a place right in our own backyard, so to speak. I’m sure we’ll be back soon!

When we got home, Sam drew a picture of our day. She included pictures of all the things we saw, including some amazingly fragrant flowers. It’s her way of making a memory. I am glad we all look so happy in the photo. I knew she had a good time, but it’s nice to see proof of it once in a while.

Mommy and Sammy Haircuts!

| May 14, 2016

Sam has needed a haircut in the worst way for a while. Her hair is tangling so badly in the back and it’s because the ends are dry and straggly. She is so insistent about not getting her hair cut (she loves it long) but since she’s only had one haircut in her entire life, it was time. I convinced her the same way I did the first time – by saying I’d go too. So off we went. We look pretty darn good, if I do say so myself!

Hanging out with her Daddy

| May 14, 2016

Sam loves to do stuff with Mark. He works a lot, but always tries to find time to play with her after dinner or after I get home from work. Last night they went skating! She hasn’t quite figured out the actual skating motion yet, she still sort of shuffles her feet along but she has fun anyway.

DSC04216

Sam likes to hang on to the back of you and just sort of get dragged along.

DSC04219

Chalk was up next on the agenda, and her message shows how much she loves spending time with her favorite guy.

DSC04223

Mark was showing her how if the ground is wet, her chalk looks different. The colors are more vibrant. When she was done, she had fun rinsing everything off.

DSC04228

Speaking of favorite guys, here’s Zach. It had been a long time, since Muffin died when Sam was a baby, since we’d had a male cat in the house, and I didn’t realize how much I missed it. Males are so different than female cats. He’s such a dude. This picture cracks us all up.

DSC04213

And of course, there’s our baby, Penelope. It’s a good thing that she tolerates all the hugging well, because Sam isn’t going to stop! She finally got a cat she considers “all hers” and takes advantage of every second Penny will give her.
