After a LONG almost three months, Pop Pop is home! What an adventure he had going through Alaska and the great Northwest! Sam has been asking for ages, “When is Pop Pop going to be home?” so we were glad when he finally was. Sam was, of course, happy to see him, but equally as happy to have the presents he brought her. I think her favorite “present” came before he was even home though — a postcard postmarked from the North Pole! When Mark and I showed her what the postmark meant, and Sam really thought about what that meant, she was not too sure that she believed that Pop Pop was where Santa lives. 😉 He promised her that he told Santa she was a very good girl.
After a nice family dinner that was a long time in coming, Sam brought her Pop Pop out back so he could see the corn hole games he made her in person. When he left they weren’t yet painted and they turned out so well.
Welcome home, Pop Pop! Let’s hope this was your last long trip!

One of the places that Sam and her group went quite often while at Tyler camp was Indian Rock. We actually had no idea where it was, but thought it sounded like a good place to find, so off we went! The weather was cooperating and we all like being outside. Tyler is one of our favorite places, and having somewhere new to go seemed irresistible.
It didn’t take long to figure out where Indian Rock was supposed to be or which trail to take. It was on the shortest, easiest, most family-friendly trail, which is perfect for Sam. It certainly was beautiful back on the trail. Quiet, peaceful and we only saw one or two other people. Sam posed for a photo op next to this odd tree that had vines hanging from it. We told her she looked just like Curious George!
The trail was easy to follow, pretty flat, and boy, really pretty!
The crazy girl posing again. You can tell she is used to having her picture taken!
We did finally find Indian Rock, which is actually a conglomeration of rocks along a stream. Sam had fun looking for water bugs and worms and all kinds of creepy crawly things.
We all had a great day, but it was a bit warm and Sam was completely beat by the time we got done. I was just about dragging her along, but she made it. We stopped for a popsicle in the Tyler office before we left and that made it worth it! Who knew after all the times we’ve been to Tyler that we’d find something new, yet again. Love that place, and love that our little girl does too.

While on the way home from Grandmom’s today, Sam was babbling away in the backseat, like usual. Sometimes she is talking to me, sometimes to her toys, and sometimes to imaginary friends. Unless I know she is telling me something, I tune it out most of the time. I did at one point, hear her say, “Oh my gosh, I said ran instead of runned! I am talking like a grown up!” I think she surprised even herself. We have been working on improving her use of words now that she is almost 7. I know that it is common for kids to say things like “bringed” but I still try to correct her when I can. Her language skills have always been good. We never used baby talk or many baby words and it has paid off. She speaks very clearly and with words that are correct. I do sometimes miss the little tiny voice she used to have. I hear it on old videos and she sounds so small. Most of the old mispronounced words are gone. A long time ago, I actually had made a list in my email of some of my favorites from when she was a baby:
sleepsack = seekack
backpack = ackback
music = moogick
hippopotamus = hippopomus
decorations = decations
beautiful = boofibul
And two of my all time favorites,
yellow = lellow
Grandmom = Nanmom
Most of her misuses of words are along the lines of “runned” now and not words she cannot pronounce. We are somewhat past that, I guess. There is one word she consistently still mispronounces that I refuse to correct because it is a last vestige of her babyhood – she says “brefikt” instead of breakfast. I won’t let that one go. She’s still my baby, for as long as I can help it.

Last night we dined al fresco, right in Springfield! The owner of Springfield Pasta Company and Thunderbird Pizza approached the township about closing Saxer Avenue for a night and allowing the merchants there to set up tables and have an outside dining event. It was so much fun! There was live music, a bunch of food vendors, and all the businesses were open.
Sam is perusing the menu trying to figure out what she is having. Grandmom lent her some sunglasses because it was so bright!
It was fun sitting out with our Springfield neighbors enjoying the music and having some good food. It was a bit disorganized (although to be fair, these are not actual sit down restaurants, so they were kind of winging it). It took an hour after we ordered to get our food!
Being that we had to wait so long, thankfully, there was some good bread. Not that we all got that much. Sam pretty much had a monopoly on the basket.
I don’t know what kind of ice the ice maker was making, but Sam kept making rings. I love her diamond!
All in all, it was fun. Except the part where an entire glass of soda got knocked into my lap. Yeah, that happened. But I soldiered through, determined to have a great time. The food was excellent and Sam was happy to have had pasta and soft serve from her favorite ice cream place, Vera’s. I think they’re going to try to do it again being that it was so successful – it was mobbed! If they do, we’ll be there! But I might wear a raincoat next time…

I have been promising Sam for a long time now that I was going to take her to gymnastics. She has been interested ever since that birthday party she went to. Well, I finally took her. Her friend, Lina, was going and I thought it was a perfect opportunity. Sam loved it! She had a little trouble doing some things at first, but by the time the class was over, she was doing so much. She even swung her feet up on the bar to meet her hands! The best part (according to Sam) is that she finally learned how to do a somersault! When she got home from the class, she spent about an hour and a half doing nothing but. She is so proud of herself. I guess we’ll be signing her up for classes this fall!
