Mark (and I) really want Sam to learn how to swim. It is important for so many reasons. I can’t swim, and although it doesn’t bother me that much, there are times I wish I could. I don’t want Sam to be in the same boat. First, it could save her life. Secondly, and perhaps less importantly, I want her to be able to have fun in the water! So many of her school friends are at the pool and many of them swim, and it is hard if not impossible for her to play with them when she has to wear a ring or some other flotation device. We did enroll her in the lessons at the YMCA last year, but honestly, they were almost useless. Being in a group, even a small one, with one instructor meant very little individual attention. This year, I decided to get her private swim lessons with an instructor at the heath club where I belong. I figure if she can’t learn with one on one instruction, she is never going to learn. Well, the first lesson went pretty well. Surprisingly, Sam actually listened to the teacher and did what she was asked to do, which involved a lot of putting her face in the water, and even dunking down under the water, which is something Sam never likes to do. The lessons were progressing really well. Sam learned how to propel herself across the water by just kicking her feet and she floated pretty well too. She just had her third lesson this Monday and she did so much I was so impressed. Tuesday, my mom took her to the pool. She told me Sam actually went TOTALLY UNDER THE WATER! She was using my mom’s leg like a rope and climbed down and touched the bottom of the pool! A bunch of times! I couldn’t believe it. Sure enough, at her next lesson, she did it! My little girl! Three swim lessons and she is under water swimming like a fish! Mark and I were so insanely proud of her. She does have a way to go before I would say she is a “swimmer” (she’s not even using her arms yet), but WOW! Great job, Sam! Mommy and Daddy couldn’t be happier! Mark and I took her to the pool and got some great underwater pics of our girl!

Sam is always crafting. She made this for me and I asked her what it was. She told me it was my medal for being the best mom ever. Do I have a great kid, or what?

Happy Birthday, Grandmom! Thanks for being the best grandmom and little girl could ask for. I honestly don’t know what we would do without you. It has been a hard year, but you will always have us. Just try to get rid of us!

We’ve only been in our house for, hmmm…about 15 years? We are finally getting our new kitchen floor! Not generally something that would merit being on a blog about Sam, but I had to post this picture. Because the floor needs to go under our major appliances, the installers had to move the stove and refrigerator into our family room. Our somewhat small family room. That already had the kitchen table in it. Sam thought it was a fabulous arrangement. She liked eating her lunch at the kitchen table while sitting on the couch. And being surrounded by major appliances, well…that didn’t seem to phase her at all.
After the installers left for the night, they kindly moved the fridge back into the living room, albeit not where it normally goes. Zach went exploring. He does love to climb! Sam thought we should leave the fridge there permanently. Um. No. It has been a crazy week!

I took Sam to the playground to meet up with her friend, Lina. We got there early and Sam was playing around by herself. It’s been a while since I have taken her to the playground, and I was so amazed and how big she seems now! I remember so clearly when Mark and I first starting bringing her there, the equipment seemed so huge! And so scary. It is pretty big, much bigger than what is in other playgrounds in Springfield, but it is the closest playground, so that is where we generally go. We used to have to hover so close, and actually climb up the equipment with her in fear that she would not pay attention and fall. Now, it is like nothing. She zooms around and plays and somehow, it doesn’t seem so big anymore.
These little steps, that when Sam was small she used to call “tables” were terrifying to her! She would walk across them so tentatively, and only when holding your hand. Now, she just about skipped across. Those long legs!
She always liked the slides, even though they are pretty big, but I have to say, head first is not something she used to do!
My cutie pie! She does like to pose.
We liked how the static electricity made her hair go crazy!
She is growing up so fast. Every time I look at her, she seems to have grown an inch. I really wish I could slow time…
