So this happened.

| September 30, 2016

Ok, so this happened.

Sam’s teacher emails the parents a pdf newsletter on Fridays about what they did that week, the books they read, important dates, etc. She always includes pictures of the class doing things, which I really appreciate. It is hard to not want to see everything that goes on during Samantha’s day.  So, Mark was asking Sam who everyone in the pictures was. When Sam got to one photo, she says to him, “That’s Aiden. He told me he likes me. Then he said, ‘You’re my girlfriend.'”

Um. What? We asked Sam if Aiden was nice and she said yes, but she looked sort of amused by the whole thing. I mean, of course, he would want my gorgeous daughter to be his girlfriend. Duh. But…maybe not so soon. I’ve got my eye on you, Aiden….

Trying new things

| September 30, 2016

I probably mentioned a bunch of times that Sam’s picky eating habits have always concerned me. It is very hard to get her to eat, not only quantity, but variety. There are so few things she will eat and trying to get her to taste something new is difficult if not impossible. I was tired of fighting with her about it, so, on the advice of a book I read, I backed off. No more pressuring her to try new food, no more sticking food on her plate and expecting her to eat it. Well, I am not sure what happened, but lately, I have been noticing a distinct difference in how Sam perceives food. Maybe it was my changed behavior, maybe it’s watching the kids at school eat lunch, or maybe she’s just growing up (or maybe it’s a combination). At any rate, I am so happy she has been trying so many different foods! She doesn’t like all of them, and that’s ok by me. But she is trying. And she actually comes to me and says, “What do we have? I feel like trying something.”

Lately, she has tried bell peppers, strawberries, string cheese, provolone and swiss cheese, oranges, a whole bunch of new candy, glazed donuts (she would only eat the frosted kind) and I don’t know how many other things. I am actually losing track! It is hit or miss what she likes or does not, but I have actually found new food she will eat. Hallelujah!

Here she is cutting up orange slices. She didn’t actually like them, but she said she liked the juice so she sucked it all out! Yay, Sam!!

Electronics

| September 25, 2016

It’s time to experiment! Sam has been busting at the seams to get moving on her electronics and she and Mark finally did. Sam has her safety goggles and her tools and is ready to go!

Zach came to help, but I’m not sure cats and electronics mix…

It actually surprised me how well Sam paid attention and figured out what to do. She had to place tiny little wires and things into very specific holes in order for the projects to work, and she did it. She really paid attention to Mark and did what needed to be done.

Their first project was making a light bulb light. It worked!

DSC_6887

After each project, Mark made Sam draw out the schematics so that she could really understand how it worked. She did a great job! They did multiple projects with the bulb, making it light dimmer or higher, etc. Once, Mark was not home and Sam wanted to show me how to do the different things. I told her not to touch it because she would mess it up. She insisted she knew what to do. Sure enough, she did! She lit the bulb dimly, moved some wires around, and voila! The bulb was bright. Who knew?

Later that day we got to work on her Ghostbusters Lego car, her present from Pop Pop.  Mark and I are so glad that Sam really likes these kinds of projects. Maybe one day she will be an engineer!

Sam’s Party

| September 24, 2016

It’s party time! Sam’s family party, that is. Another party with all of her friends is coming up…more on that later! Sam always picks a theme and this year she picked “Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom”. Ben and Holly is a show we all  watch together. It is made by the same people who created Peppa Pig. The voices are the same, but it is a whole other show and Sam loves it. Of course, just like when she had her Peppa Pig party, no one has ever heard of it here so I had to order her decorations and toys from England. But, if it makes her happy, I will do it. Just give it a few years. Just like Peppa, Ben and Holly will arrive!

We couldn’t buy her a big birthday banner like she usually has, but I did manage to get this picture made. We displayed it on our TV during the party.

Before everyone arrived, we had some quiet time and Penny jumped in for a birthday cuddle.

One of Sam’s favorite party decorations – balloons! We’ve got to have balloons!

When everyone arrived, we spent some time talking and eating, then Sam got impatient and wanted to open presents. Presents? She thought she was getting presents? 🙂

Sam does love getting presents, but honestly, she is the happiest that everyone comes to be with her. She misses anyone who is not there. Last year, her Pop Pop was away and she missed him. Thankfully, he was here for her birthday this year.

Her Aunt Krista and Uncle Adam, Maddox and Ryder, always make Sam happy. She loves having kids to play with. Sam does love her cousins.

Sam knows her Grandmom will always be there for every important thing in her life. I know she has been missing her Poppy. She’s been talking about him a lot. I always just try to tell her how proud of her he would be, and that I am sure he is looking at her from heaven and smiling.

Here’s her cake! Lots of frosting, just like Sam likes.

Happy Birthday, Sam! I hope all your wishes come true!

Happy 7th Birthday, Samantha!

| September 23, 2016

What seems like not that long ago, my little girl was born and now she is seven. Seven! Everyone says to enjoy each moment because the time goes so quickly and they grow so fast, and boy, are they right. It couldn’t be so long ago that I held my little girl in one arm! Happy, happy birthday to my beautiful daughter, Samantha. You are the light of my life, even when you make me bonkers. We are a true mother and daughter combo – you make me insane one minute and I want to smother you with kisses the next. But no matter what, I will always be your biggest fan. Happy 7th Birthday!

Unfortunately, Sam had school on her birthday, although I did volunteer at lunch that day, so at least we got to see each other.  Here’s my cutie eating lunch at her class table.

After school, she had gymnastics, so it was a very busy day with not a lot of time to spend at home. Sam was bursting at the seams to open her presents in the morning, but I told her she had to wait until after gymnastics so that Daddy could be there. That is a LONG TIME for a little girl to wait, but wait she did. I was proud of her.

The minute we got home from gymnastics though, all bets were off. She was not waiting any longer! She got a lot of nice presents, including some doll travel accessories she wanted.

…and a Barbie eye doctor! Thankfully, Sam’s eyes are still perfect (as far as we know) and she doesn’t need glasses, but she is fascinated by them. If the time comes, she won’t mind wearing them.

Miss Penny helped Sam open some of her other presents.

DSC_6734

Mark got Sam a special present for them to do together – a basic electronics set. I know Sam can’t wait to try it out. She loved taking apart the computer and learning about how things work.

Look at all this loot! Sam scored!

Zachy finally got captured by the birthday girl.

DSC_6750

It was a busy day, but a good one. Sam’s name got announced over the loud speaker at school for having a birthday, she had cupcakes as her school snack, she saw me at lunch, everyone at gymnastics wished her a happy birthday, and then she came home to McDonald’s and presents! Happy, Happy Birthday!!
