Today Mark and I met with Sam’s teacher, Mrs. Hall, for the fall conference. It was a pretty thorough assessment of how she is doing so far. Overall, she is doing just fine. Sam is a good student who works hard. There are some areas for her to work on, of course, but she is doing very well. The one comment her teacher had was that she makes mistakes and her writing is a bit sloppy because she rushes through her work. Mrs. Hall really wants her to slow down because when she does, she doesn’t make mistakes and her writing is so much neater. We told her we’d work on that at home. Gee…she is super fast and rushy…wonder where she got that from? (Mark did just call me a tornado the other day….)

Today was the first grade Community Helper Day at school. Every kid in Sam’s class was assigned a job that is considered a “community helper” to research and give a presentation about at school. Sam was assigned nurse (she really wanted to be vet, but what can you do). The kids researched the job at school and wrote a report that they then presented in class. All week they practiced reading their reports. They were supposed to wear a costume and bring the appropriate tools to school, and since Sam didn’t really have anything to wear, I ordered her some scrubs. She looks adorable!! The parents were invited to come and watch and it was so much fun.
First, the kids were paired up to read a short statement about what they were going to be doing. Sam’s partner was Brianna.
Each child read their report and then took three questions from the audience. The parents were allowed to ask questions, but the kids had so many, it was more fun to just let them do their own thing. Mark and I were happy to see Sam raise her hand quite a few times and participate. You never know how much she speaks up in class, so it was good to see.
When it was time for Sam to present, she did a fantastic job! She read her entire report perfectly, she was nice and loud so everyone could hear and she answered her questions from the audience. She must have gotten her Daddy’s speaker gene, since she didn’t seem nervous at all.
She showed everyone her tools and acted like a real pro. Public speaking can be hard, but she was amazing. Of course, I videotaped the entire thing.
Here is the report she presented. Great job, Samantha! We are so proud of you!

But Samantha has just been chomping at the bit to decorate for Christmas. Truth be told, I have too. I can’t wait to get the decorations up! I already strung the lights outside (I won’t light them yet though) since the weather was cooperating. I gave in a bit and told Sam she could put her tree in her room. She was so excited! We got her tree set up in record time and I gave her the box of ornaments she always uses. First on was her new garland that I got her at Target. She did the whole tree herself, and I think it looks pretty amazing.
The whole day sort of wore her out. She conked out nice and easy with a little help from her buddy. 🙂 Sweet dreams of Christmastime, my little love!

Last night was Samantha’s last night of gymnastics. After this round of lessons, we are taking a break for the winter session so that we have more time to spend as a family over the holidays. Not to mention that I don’t love the idea of worrying about gymnastics if we get a lot of snow….For the last night, all the parents were invited to come and watch a demonstration of everything the kids learned.
Mark and I were so proud of her! She learned a lot and had a great time. And just as importantly, she stuck to it, even on days when she was exhausted from school and didn’t want to go. She did go, and she had a great time.
This was the highest I ever saw her go!
Our medal winning champion! We love you!

Sam had her annual well visit today with her pediatrician. Everything went perfectly well, as I expected it would. For the first time in a while, I actually felt like I had no concerns to talk to the doctor about! My one big concern has always been her picky eating, but I made sure to tell her doctor that, although she is not eating a ton of foods, her willingness to try new things has increased by leaps and bounds!
She is still a skinny minny weighing only 42.5 pounds, and she did get taller (it’s not my imagination), but not by as much as it seems like – she is now 46.5″. She only grew about 2″. I swear, I think she was slumping or something, because she seems massively taller! Either that or last year she was on her tiptoes!
Her vision was perfectly fine, which I am so grateful for, especially since Mark and I were both wearing glasses so early. After her checkup she got her flu shot and didn’t complain even once. My big girl. 🙂 In a nutshell, she’s doing great!
