She’s So Daddy’s Girl

| July 14, 2017

Mark has always loved pocket knives and well, knives of all kinds, really. A bunch of years ago, he made Sam a knife out of wood from a kit. She just loves it, because now she can be just like her Dad. Mark was cleaning some knives last night and Sam quickly ran to get hers so that she could do the same. I just love seeing them together doing their thing. She really loves doing whatever Mark is doing. I always wanted that wonderful father-daughter relationship for Mark and Sam, and they certainly got it. The happy look on her face truly says it all.

Sam’s Little Buddy

| July 12, 2017

Penny has always been Sam’s little cat, but Zach has been getting so lovable lately, that Sam and he have been getting along better than I ever expected. He wants more and more attention all the time, and Sam is happy to give it to him. Every single day, in the morning when we wake up, Zach runs into Sam’s room and jumps on her bed for what we have started calling, “Zachy petting time.” He nestles among her stuffed animals and just lays there purring looking for petting with his belly up in the air. It is really the sweetest thing. He has taken to her stuffed toys in a way I did not expect. He shoves his face into them and just snuggles in. One day I changed the sheets on her bed and had removed pretty much all of the hundred stuffed toys that live there every day. Zach jumped up for petting and seemed so disoriented without the toys. Sam went running to her toy bins and started wildly throwing stuffed toys on her bed so Zach had something to snuggle with.

The other day, she thought it was adorable that he was “hugging” Boo Boo, her very favorite stuffed toy. Zach has become Sam’s little buddy, that’s for sure.

Grandmom’s Birthday

| July 10, 2017

Grandmom’s birthday is coming up soon, but unfortunately, we will be on vacation (without Grandmom 🙁 ) when it actually happens. So, we decided we needed to celebrate with a special dinner before we leave. Since my cousin, John, happened to be here from Texas, we thought the weekend he was here was perfect. The more the merrier, I say. I was actually happy to have more than just the usual “us”. Everything seems a little more low key since Joe died, and I think having more people around made it seem more party-like. Mark also invited his dad, so we had a good group assembled.

First order of business was the cake! I was going to just buy one, but then decided that Sam would love it if we made one instead. And I do like to bake….Sam loves helping in the kitchen. She was super excited that this was her very first time cracking eggs without getting a bit of shell in the mix!

It was after dinner when we made it, and she was really disappointed that we couldn’t decorate it immediately. I told her there was no way because it had to bake and then cool. I did let her stay up long enough to see how it came out before shuffling her off to bed. The next morning, very, very early, Sam wanted to start decorating. I did frost it myself, but I let her do whatever she wanted to make it look nice.

I will say, I am very proud of her and Grandmom was thrilled. Her flowers are beautiful. She worked so hard to make the cake look nice for her Grandmom.

We ate dinner outside (Mark barbecued a ton of food) and then it was time for presents! Sam got my mom the silliest card with a bunch of birds wearing party hats and eating gummy worms. Totally a Sam card. Totally.

It couldn’t be cake time soon enough for Sam. Even though she only eats the frosting, she still loves cake time.

Happy Birthday, Grandmom (or G-mom, as Sam likes to call you these days). I hope you know how important you are to our family. How we just couldn’t do it without you. We love you so much.

Allowance

| July 8, 2017

Sam has been bugging the heck out of us for an American Girl doll. She knows there is a “Samantha” doll and now she is even more into the idea of owning one. I have told her a million times that they are ridiculously expensive so, no. I am not buying one. She asked me if she could earn money to buy one herself and since, frankly, she is old enough to be doing chores anyway, we said yes. We created a weekly chore chart of things that Sam is responsible for on a daily and weekly basis (helping to feed the cats, keeping her room neat, emptying upstairs trash, setting and clearing the table, dusting downstairs, etc.) She worked so hard this week that she earned her first allowance of $3.00 per week. You’re on your way to that doll, Samantha!

Still Swimming

| July 8, 2017

It was a bit hard getting Sam back into the groove of swimming this year. At first, she didn’t want to go underwater, didn’t want to wear her goggles, and basically, wouldn’t do anything. After a lot of prodding, Mark finally got her back into it. Once she started, she couldn’t stop!

Mark always does handstands for her which she finds endlessly fascinating. She hasn’t tried her own handstand yet, but I am sure she will. She has a hard time getting all the way to the bottom of the pool to retrieve diving rings and things on her own because she just floats right back up! How she would do a handstand, I’m not sure, but we’ll see.

She was all dived out after a while. Time to chillax!

Did I mention the chillaxing? Yeah, they look beat. Oh well, that’s what the pool is for!
