Busy Bees Camp

This year, Sam went to full day camp at Busy Bees. After last year’s complaints about how she was the only girl who had to leave at lunchtime, I had promised her she could go full day. It’s a LOT of crafting – 9:00 to 4:00 – but she loved it. It turned out on the first day when I took her, the Busy Bees person told me that until only a few days before camp started, Sam would have been the ONLY kid who stayed after lunch. Oh boy. Thank God that changed. After all her complaining, she would not have wanted to be the only afternoon kid. The night before camp started, she was a bit nervous, worrying that she wouldn’t have any friends, that no one would like her. Typical kid worries, I guess, but I felt bad for her. I quickly reminded her that she always thinks that, at camp, at school, and she always makes more than enough friends. Who wouldn’t like her? She is so sweet.
She came home with SO MUCH art. Three canvas paintings, a wall hanging on a board of some sort, glass work, pottery, and clay that they actually sculpted themselves. The problem was that, I have no idea why, they never actually got around to painting the clay, so I had to take her back to paint it, and then back again to pick it up. Well, she went to camp weeks ago, but all her stuff is finally done, and here it is!
This isn’t actual camp, but rather photos I took of her when I took her back to paint her clay. No photos of actual camp, but that’s ok. Although, sometimes I’d like to be a fly on a wall to see what goes on!
The theme of the week was Mad Science. Her first two pieces of pottery are a flask and a beaker. Both will make lovely vases, I think!
This is her robot bank, but she told me she isn’t going to put money in it because she is afraid all the clanking coins will break him.
I love the little detail she added on her own.
These are some of her clay pieces that she actually sculpted herself, a mushroom cloud and a mad scientist. I love the wild hair!
She sculpted and painted this Frankenstein too! Very cool.
This was her last piece of clay, a fossil.
This pottery piece is supposed to be a volcano, with the lava bubbling out. I’m not really sure how it’s Mad Science related, but…
Sam painted three canvases. This one she likes, but says no way is it going in her room. It apparently doesn’t “go” with her other paintings of a horse, a cat and a beach. There’s a theme, I guess…
Mark knew what this was right away, but I didn’t. It’s the car from Back to the Future, with the clock tower in the back. Once I knew, it’s actually pretty cool. Mark is snagging this one for his workshop. We realized Sam never saw that movie. We have to correct that, stat!
This one Sam said can go in her room. It fits her girly theme.
This is sort of a 3-D piece on wood. It’s supposed to be a potion exploding, and all the stuff around it exploded out. It’s cute, but it’s a bit heavy. I have no idea where it can go!
Some of the glass is pretty neat. The only problem is that I have no idea how to display it! She won’t let me hang up last year’s glass work because she is afraid it will fall off the wall and break. I swear, this kid needs her own museum to display all the stuff we have made at Busy Bees. Her bureau is totally full and now we have more.
This is her name, but spelled out in blocks that are supposed to look like blocks from the periodic table. I am glad her name is long enough to really look like anything. For once, all those letters pay off!
She has one more week of camp this year, at Tyler Arboretum. But for now, we have the shore to see!
