Welcome, Fairies!

| September 18, 2017

Sam has been bugging me to make a fairy house for a while now. I have no objection to doing it, I just don’t think it’s really the time of year to do so. I mean, that’s a spring thing, right? Every time I tried to tell Sam that, she’d yell, “BUT WHERE ARE THE FAIRIES GOING TO LIVE THIS WINTER?” Oh boy. I gave in, and told her we could buy the necessary supplies. One trip to Home Depot and the Dollar Tree later, and we’re ready to go.

I helped Sam with some of it since the construction involved using the hot glue gun, but she did a lot herself. We glued fake flowers and moss to the house, and made a bed and a chair out of popsicle sticks.

Sam arranged stepping stones and some sea glass for decoration. We placed it in our garden under the porch awning so that hopefully it will stay dry.

It turned out adorably!

Sam even made a “welcome” sign for the fairies. Now we just have to wait and see who might move in!

Mommy’s Birthday!

| September 17, 2017

Happy Birthday to me! It’s my birthday, and although this blog is about Sam, we always share how Sam celebrates. Sam is always full of gifts and love for everyone and this year was no different. I made Sam wait to give me my presents until she got home from school, and we were ready to go out to dinner. Sam made me a card…

…and got me a beautiful gift (with a little help from Grandmom).

I got some nice gifts, including a new Pandora charm for my bracelet and this sweater.

We went out and had a really nice dinner, but then it all kinda went haywire. Mark somehow injured his back on Friday and by the time we got home from dinner, he was in a lot of pain. I wound up having to get him to the emergency room on Saturday morning (that’s a story for another day), but that meant cancelling my family dinner on Saturday. My mom had already bought my cake, so she brought it over on Sunday so we could celebrate. Sam was worried about her dad, but also worried about the cake! I mean, come on, she’s 7. 🙂

All in all, I had a good birthday, even though our plans got a bit mucked up. I am so lucky to have my amazing family. Thanks for the love!

Meeting Mrs. Smith

| September 14, 2017

Today was picture day at school and I decided since Sam’s class was getting taken at what would be my lunchtime, that I would sign up to be one of the volunteers. Sam’s class was being taken right after lunch and recess and my first thought was one of dread over what state her hair and clothes would be in. I am so glad that I went to school. Every kid in her class came in with the reddest of faces and hair dripping with sweat. These are going to be some lovely photos….But the biggest reason I am glad I went is that while Sam was waiting in line for her turn, her nose started bleeding! Poor Sam. I was talking to her teacher, and I heard Sam yell my name. I quickly ran and got tissues but then it did take a while for the bleeding to stop. Thankfully, I was there to help her, and she didn’t get blood all over her clothes. Also, since it took so long for her turn (she was the last kid), her face wasn’t red from the heat anymore.

Here she is, ready to go, pre-bloody nose and after. The photographer let me preview her picture and I think it’s adorable. I can’t wait to get the photos.

Even though I did get to talk to Sam’s teacher, we officially met her that night at back to school night, and got to see her classroom. After all the anxiety about school opening, I am happy to report that her teacher, Mrs. Smith, seems absolutely great! She has been a teacher for a long time, and she’s pretty old school, so I don’t think we’re going to be getting email updates and whatnot, but she seems fantastic and Sam adores her! I mean, really loves her. And that’s what it’s about, right? If Sam didn’t like her, that would be a bigger issue to overcome. My neurotic need for email communication, updates, photos, etc. is my problem, not Sam’s. I think I have gotten spoiled by some of her other teachers. But, as I say, the bigger picture is what is important.

Here’s a quick pic of her classroom. Sam is thrilled that she has her own desk now and no more group tables! She has already made fast friends with the girls in her group, Giselle and Alaina. Sam loves school, loves her teacher, and I have every confidence that this year will be great!

Harvey and Irma

| September 12, 2017

This has been quite the hurricane season so far. First, Texas got hit really badly then Florida got hammered. The Florida hurricane was getting a lot of play on the news and Mark and I were watching a lot of the coverage. Sam had been watching with us and a few of the reporters were in Fort Myers, Florida. When Sam saw that, she freaked out! I think she thinks we are famous. 🙂 Not quite, Sam. Not quite.

Mad Scientists at Work

| September 10, 2017

Mark went to Home Depot for some random stuff and while he was there he got an idea for an experiment. Sam was very intrigued by the whole process. Basically, Mark filled the jug on the table with water and asked Sam to get all the water into the bottle on the ground without touching either bottle. He gave her some rubber tubing and tried to have her figure it out. Eventually, he had to show her how she could siphon water and get it to flow in. She loved it!

They added some food coloring so that she could really see the water flowing.

Sam loves her dad and all his crazy experiments. I try so hard to do things with her, but I would never come up with this sort of stuff, which totally fascinates her. She is lucky she has him!
