Nintendo

We have never really been a gaming household, unless you count Kindle games and things like that. We have never had any sort of game console and weren’t really planning on getting one either. I never had video games as a kid and I know Mark did, but he never seemed like he was into getting anything new. The only thing that sort of changed that was that last Christmas (not the one that just passed), Nintendo came out with this “retro” console that had some old school games built in. It was amazingly cheap, which meant of course, you could not find it anywhere. I searched and searched because Mark wanted one for Christmas. Did I say you couldn’t find one anywhere? Oh, that’s not true. If you wanted to pay over $200.00 for a console that retailed for $59.95. No thank you. It seemed like a limited run thing because I assumed I’d be able to buy one after Christmas but they never appeared in stores. This Christmas I thought maybe I could find one somewhere since all the hulabaloo died down. No such luck. I did manage to find a cheap Chinese knockoff on ebay that had most of the games, but not Zelda, which was one of Mark’s favorites when he was a kid. In the course of talking to a friend, I found out she had not one, but two, original Nintendo systems and a bunch of games somewhere in her attic. If she could find it, she was going to give it to me. Well, she found it! And she also had some of the games Mark loved like Zelda, Super Mario Brothers and Paperboy. Sam and Mark have been having a blast playing games! It is so cute watching Sam discover these games from the 1980s. Cracks me up. They look so dated compared to today’s standards but she loves them. She’s getting really good!

This kid needs a routine

| January 24, 2018

Mornings around here are hectic enough when I am trying to get ready for work and I have to keep reminding Sam to do all the things she needs to do to get ready for school. I am constantly reminding her to get moving and to get dressed. I finally got so sick and tired of finding her downstairs in her pajamas when I barely have time to take care of the cats, make her lunch, and make her breakfast, much less have to race her upstairs to get dressed too. So, I decided to do the only thing that ever seems to work when I need Sam to do something – make a chart. Two charts actually. I thought if I made her charts to follow every day, one for morning and one for bedtime, with all of her tasks (and added fun kitty photos to make it seem more appealing) she would do it. So far, so good! She loves the kitty photos and seems to be following along. In the mornings while I am getting ready for work, she is in her room doing her thing. She has always responded to charts since she was a little girl. Thank God! At least I can usually find something that works to motivate her!

Such drama!

Here are Samantha with her two best buddies from school this year, Alaina and Giselle, at a birthday party they attended together for one of their classmates.

She bonded with them from pretty much the first week of school, which is nice, but boy, it has gotten a bit crazy! Both girls seem a bit obsessed with Samantha to the point where they are literally fighting over her. As in, who gets to play with her, who gets to sit with her, etc. Tears have been shed. It is ridiculous. I am not sure if it is one of both of the girls who is sort of clingy, but to me, it seems like both. Sam is sort of caught in the middle, which stinks. She is a people pleaser, our girl, and she just wants everyone to be happy. I am glad Sam is popular, but come on! When I was 8 we did not have this sort of drama. Anyway, not to get into the messy details, but hopefully it will work itself out. The school counselor has gotten involved to try to fix the situation since apparently, at least one of the girls brought it up. They devised a “schedule” where Sam spends certain days at recess with one girl and certain days with the other, etc. Honestly, what is up with these little girls, I have no idea. I can’t even imagine what the teenage years will bring!

We have created a Chipoloholic

Since we all had off for Martin Luther King Day, we wanted to do something as a family. We are always saying we are going to take day trips and do things and we never seem to. This time we were determined and we decided to take a trip to the Herr’s factory for their tour. It is supposed to be a really good tour, mostly because it’s one of the few left around here that is the actual factory instead of a fake factory tour like the Crayola one now. It was so much fun! The factory was very cool and Sam seemed to enjoy watching them make chips, pretzels and other goodies. The best part is when they pull freshly made potato chips right off the line and give them to you to eat. So good! Sam had so many chips, it was crazy. The look on her face when she bit into a warm potato chip was awesome. As you can imagine, we bought a ton of snacks at the gift shop to take home (and Sam got a few other little things too, of course).

You can’t take pictures inside but we took one outside before going in. Totally worth the ride!

She’s rich!

| January 13, 2018

As part of cleaning out Sam’s room recently in an effort to make it more of a “big girl” room I convinced Sam to get rid of the giant Coke bottle container that she keeps change in. She agreed to go to the bank and cash it in. I had no idea how much money she would have but I figured around $50-60 or so. We went to our bank where they have a change counting machine and HOLY COW! The kid had exactly $140 (plus a few dollar coins she wanted to keep)! She’s rich! Now we need to open her a bank account. I thought she’d be begging us to spend it, but she loves the idea of having her own account. Hopefully, one day she will be richer than us and can keep us in the lap of luxury!

As a side note, she did agree to get rid of a few things like her tiny table and chairs and her easel as well as some toys she really doesn’t play with to make space and to make her room look more grown up. Progress! I have really been working on her to get her to understand that getting rid of old things makes room for new things. She’s finally getting it. It all comes with maturity I suppose. Baby steps, but we are cleaning out!
