Field Trip

| April 19, 2018

Sam’s class had her field trip today. In second grade, they do a “walking tour” of Springfield and visit the police station, the Township office, and the library, which conveniently, are all in one area together. It turned out to not be a walking tour since the weather was not great (they rode the bus), but all in all they made it. Only the homeroom parents were chaperones, and I was informed by my friend Alisha that Sam was so excited she was literally bouncing while waiting for the bus. That does not surprise me. 🙂

I think the highlight was the police station but alas, there was a glitch. The kids were supposed to have a behind the scenes view to see the cells and whatnot, but of course, one of the few times anything happens in our town, someone was arrested that morning for a drug related crime and was being held in one of the cells, so they couldn’t take the kids through. Sam was so mad! She didn’t understand why they couldn’t go because the “bandit” was in the cell and it is not like he could get them. Yeah….how ’bout we don’t let the kids traipse by, Sam. No.

The principal, who uses Twitter a lot, posted a thank you to the police department for having the classes there and they wrote back, “It was our pleasure. They are always welcome. We owe them a spin around the jail cells though. Unfortunately a bad guy ruined our appointment.” I doubt the kids will get that spin, but maybe some other time.

One of Sam’s homeroom moms did send me this picture of Sam, which I was so happy to see! My little prisoner. 🙂

Why does she hate sleep? Why? Why?

| April 6, 2018

Mark and I have gotten really fed up with Samantha not staying in her bed at night and coming into our room waking me up and insisting on getting in our bed. Enough is enough! So, starting in mid-February, we laid down the law! No more in our bed. We knew she was going to wake me up, but I told her I was marching her right back to her room. The first couple of nights were awful. She woke me up, I swear, what felt like every few hours. I don’t know what it is with her. She just cannot stay in her bed. She tells me, “I just wake up” and I explained that everyone rouses at night, but that doesn’t mean you get out of bed. Just stay there and close your eyes and you will go right to sleep again. After the first few days, it became twice per night that she was coming in to get me. I would go in her room, pop her back in bed, and within 5 or 10 minutes, she was fast asleep. Well, that got old too. Why am I getting up just so she can fall right asleep again? She can do that without my help. So we starting telling her once per night and that was it. She stuck to that for a bit and lo and behold, the kid managed to stay in her bed all night! For a short time anyway. A few times she woke up really early and I told her it was too early to be up so she went back to her room and read or drew or whatever. Frankly, I didn’t care. I thought we were home free. Then she slept at Grandmom’s house and I think it threw her off because she was back to waking me a couple times per night.

I really hoped that once she had down the staying in her room at night for a few months, I could then ditch the staying with her at night until she falls asleep. I figured she’d get the idea that she can fall asleep on her own without anyone being there. Well, it looks like I may have to wait a little longer. She has finally starting staying in her bed all night (with a few minor exceptions) but I don’t think we are ready for me to stop staying with her at bedtime until she conks out. Baby steps…

Oh, wait, before I go….I didn’t mention the sleepwalking incident. One night in March she came to wake me and was rambling on and on about “Why won’t you let me do it? Just let me do it! Why?” then I realized that she was totally not responding to my voice that she was asleep so I steered her back to bed where she kept saying it, and then starting saying something like, “I put it behind the door!” Thankfully, she quieted down in a few minutes and that was that, but geez! I used to sleepwalk when I was a kid and we need that like a hole in the head, as the saying goes. It never ends around here. Nighttime is so much fun!

The Easter Bunny Has Arrived!

| April 2, 2018

Happy Easter, everyone! It was an exciting morning, at least for Samantha, in the house. She kept begging me to let her sleep in our bed because she is always worried about sleeping alone on nights that someone (i.e. Santa or the Easter Bunny) are coming into the house. She thinks they will hear her get up in the middle of the night to come to my room and that would be bad because they would leave. I told her, then stay in your bed! And she said, clever little one that she is, “What about the song? He knows if you are sleeping? He knows if you’re awake? What about that?” I told her she was not allowed in our bed, but if she was good, she could go to sleep in the guestroom and when I came to bed, I would sleep with her so she didn’t feel like she had to get up. That satisfied her. So, the two of us slept in the guest room (with Penny). Sam woke up at 6:00 a.m. and kept asking me when it was time to get up. There was no way I was getting up for an Easter basket before 7:00 so I told her she had to wait until then. There is a digital alarm clock in that room that is very hard to read unless you push the button on the top that illuminates the screen. Sam kept pushing that thing EVERY MINUTE from about 6:10 until 7:00. Which would not be a problem, except the button has a very loud click when pushed. She is insane.

Finally, 7:00 came and Sam ran into our room to wake up Mark. When we got downstairs, it wasn’t the first place she looked, but it wasn’t too hard for Sam to find her basket. She was thrilled!

Just like always, she has to open every little goodie she gets. I think she likes the toys more than the candy (but she does like the candy!)

One of her favorites was the toy inside her Easter-themed Suprizamal, this pretty little butterfly.

All in all, the Bunny left a good haul! Lots of Hatchimals, which makes sense, since they come in eggs!

Sam liked her bunny themed ring pop.

We made a basket for Baby Ann and Sam loved showing it to her.

Baby Ann got a few more stuffed bunnies, just like her favorite pink one, Bun Bun. I love how she treats her dolls like real people.

Sam also got a special treat from the Easter Bunny – a pink and purple bush baby, just like Boo Boo. We decided they must be Boo Boo’s parents.

After all the basket festivities at home, it was time to get cleaned up and go to Aunt Krista and Uncle Adam’s house for dinner. Krista organized an Easter egg hunt for the kids and they loved it! Ryder was ready to go!

The three cousins had a blast running around the yard searching for eggs. They each had their own colors so that it was fair and everyone got the same number of eggs. Maddox and Sam were running like mad and poor little Ryder kept chasing after them!

There was one big egg for each of them hidden in the mailbox. We finally had to give in and give them a hint. We would have been out there all day!

Cousins 🙂

After the hunt, it was time to relax, and then eat!

Krista and Adam hosted a great Easter, and we all had such a good time. Sam loves being with her cousins. She is happiest running around with other kids, and when it’s family, it’s even better. Happy Easter!
