Sam has a million books, which I am fine with, but honestly, she needed to get rid of some. Her room is SO FULL, and there are books stacked on the floor, which I can’t stand, because there is no room in her bookcase. A lot of the books she is way past as far as her reading ability, and we will never read them, so I asked her to PLEASE get rid of some. Well, she must have been in the right kind of mood because when she was done, she had chosen over 100 books! I was so proud of her. We wound up selling them and I gave her some money for her efforts. Maybe realizing if I sell her stuff and she can get some cold, hard cash, it will make her more willing to part with her things!

For Christmas, Sam got a geode kit and had never gotten around to playing with it yet. She decided it was finally time to crack that thing open! Mark and Sam got busy chiseling and hammering away. Look at those long legs! This kid is growing like a weed!
Geodes! Shiny rocks. What more could a girl want? Isn’t that all diamonds are, after all!

As part of Mark’s birthday gift, which has since snowballed into a major project to be disclosed later (ah…the mystery), we decided to get a new CD player. Mark has had his since college, I think, and it was acting a bit hinky. What to do with the old one? Dismantle it, of course! Man, Sam loves taking things apart! This was no different. She likes to see every little thing inside and keep it (why must she keep it? why? why?) It does make for good lessons. She finds all the little electrical parts that she and Mark work with when doing projects and it is educational for her to see how complicated things can be. It keeps her busy, that’s for sure!

A new car! Just kidding. 😉 Just a quick pic of Sam with her cousin, Ryder, at his birthday party. How could I not share such cuteness? Where are they off to, I wonder?….

Back at the beginning of the year when Mark was at school for Sam’s star of the week guest day, and he brought the robots, he had mentioned to Sam’s teacher that he’d love to come back to do another demo for the kids. She thought it was a great idea and suggested he do something when they are in their science unit in the spring. The kids at her age sort of spend half a year on social studies and half a year on science.
They finally set something up after Mark emailed some suggested topics. They settled on doing squishy circuits, which Sam loved doing at home. Basically, it is an experiment that uses a battery pack, Play-Doh, modeling clay, and LED lights. Each table built their own working electrical circuit! They learned about how batteries work and learned about conductors, insulators, and polarity. The kids were freaking out they were so excited. They had a blast doing it! You can really see the excitement on their faces. I was impressed at how well they followed directions , wore their safety glasses (which they all wanted to keep) and they even had some pretty thoughtful questions and comments. After they were done, I left them all a Mad Scientist bookmark to commemorate the day. I think they all went home that day talking about their experiment!
Sam played at home with some of the supplies. 🙂 She loves this activity!
