It’s Never Too Early for Halloween

Sam may not be ready yet, but Zach is!

Snooping Around at School

| September 13, 2018

It’s back to school night  when we get to see Sam’s classroom and meet her teacher. It is always a fun night because we get to snoop around her room and see where she will spend her day. This year will be extra fun for me, at least, because I am the lead homeroom parent! I never thought about being a homeroom parent before last year, when I sort of volunteered late in the game. I didn’t get picked, and I was disappointed, so this year I was determined to volunteer early in hope that I get picked. We are all told that it is a lottery, but honestly, I don’t believe it. I think the first people who volunteer get picked. Well, no matter what the process is, I got picked! Sam is SO EXCITED. By being homeroom mom, I get to be at (and plan) all of her class parties and go on her field trips.

When we got there, we found Sam’s desk and this picture. Miss McCray, her teacher, had taken one of all the kids.

We walked around the room to find some of the things they had been working on already and I was surprised to find this. She really warms my heart although I wish she had drawn some hair on top of my head!

We liked reading what she wrote about herself. It’s always enlightening to see how they see themselves.

I am really looking forward to this year. I hope Samantha makes a ton of friends and doesn’t get as stressed out as she did last year. I really want her to like school as much as possible. It’s a long road ahead…

First Day of Third Grade!

| September 5, 2018

How, oh how, do we have a third grader? Say it isn’t so! I feel like she just got to her new school and before I know it she will be in middle school. Sam was ready to go on her first day with her new backpack and lunch box.

She asked me if she could do something she has not done in a million years — wear her necklace that she wore every day to preschool. The one with the photo of Mark on one side and me on the other. I don’t think she was nervous about school, but she wanted us with her all the same. I thought it was pretty sweet.

The bus was (sort of) on time. The first week the timing is sort of iffy. Mark is taking Sam Tuesday-Thursday this year because the bus comes so late it will be impossible for me to get to work on time, but on the first day, we always both go to see her off.

Sam had a good day. It is always an adjustment getting used to a new teacher and a new class full of people, but she seemed to take it in stride. There really aren’t any girls in her class she knows except for one that she didn’t know well, but I assured her she’d make lots of friends.

As if the first day of school was not exciting enough, Sam got a visit from the tooth fairy! Her tooth had been loose for a long time and she swore it wouldn’t come out but I couldn’t take it anymore so I asked her if I could give it a tug and it popped right out. (Notice her blue and gold nails? They are the school colors).

Sam had been working on a house for her tooth fairy, Sparkle, to hang out it while she is visiting. Sam got it all set up, including the wand Sam made her, in her room, with a note, of course. She placed her new fairy by the house instead of in our fairy garden for now.

As usual, she got a note from Sparkle. She’s a character, that one.

Let’s hope this school year brings lots of fun!

Which Do You Prefer?

| September 3, 2018

Sam recently bought a piece of art done by a musician we both like, Juliana Hatfield. It just appealed to him and I had no objection. I like the color and the simplicity. When we hung it, Sam was not as impressed as we were. She said she could do just as well. So, she made her own. We were very impressed with her work and even posted a copy of the two pieces of art on Ms. Hatfield’s Facebook page with a note that Samantha was inspired by the art. Sam’s is on the right. Our budding artist!
